Literally having one of those days. Talk talk is down in my area so I'm ploughing through mobile data. But literally EVERYTHING I'm trying to order is out of stock and it's driving me mad! I'm trying to find garden furniture, a bin store, a new rug, clothes for my daughter - it goes on and on!!

Just ranting!!!!!
@DynamoKev appreciate you are a brexit supporter (and i am not!) but the reality is that Brexit has caused a drop off in trade & during a pandemic, both have contributed to shortages.

R4's farming today reports that Agri exports to the EU are down between 75 and 90%
Alt markets are being sought/found but many businesses have gone out of business.
Several govt ministers inc Liz Truss, are extremely worried about the non tariff barriers in Johnsons trade deal, which is more about sovereignty than the economy.

Burying your head in the sand on the effects of Brexit might make you feel better but it doesn't hide the realities.
I was sticking to the OPs complaints of shortages.

I didn't say trade hadn't reduced.

I'm not sure why you are talking about agricultural exports in relation to shortage of garden furniture etc.

This item from the BBC discusses the issue of Garden Furniture -

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56357221

There is no mention of Brexit.

@DynamoKev If trade falls between EU and UK, that that means less goods in the shops or do you think that this stuff previous sat in warehouses?
There is also the knock on effect, if someone cannot get X from a eu shop, they will seek it in the UK, true more domestic demand but at a time its harder to import, so we get OOS.

the OP mentioned garden furniture and went on to list many items and that it goes on and on and on!

This is a question of cause and effect isn't it? Fewer "good in the shops" includes a reduction (according to the detail in the ONS figures) in car imports from Germany. One reason for that could be people and companies reluctant to order a new car at the point where the pandemic has swept away a lot of jobs and there's at least a chance that demand for new cars for commuting to work will be stifled as more can work from home.

It far from as simple as saying there are no garden tables due to Brexit.

According to French customs statistics published this week, EU-UK trade levels were pretty much back to normal in March after the January slump.

Remember that we haven't activated the controls on good coming in from Europe yet, its been delayed again but can't be delayed for ever, that would be illegal. When that kicks in it will have an effect on the supply chain for goods coming in from Europe.
Smaller businesses like mine are more affected as we are not big enough to afford to rent warehouses in The Netherlands or relocate to France, are we not important? We may not affect GDP or the deficit much but a whole families income is drastically reduced unnecessarily and nobody is benefitting from that.

Wbeezer, why on earth would we try to stop goods coming from Europe? We buy and sell goods from all over the planet here in the UK, so there is no good reason to impose customs barriers. Our micro business is currently carrying a lot more stock than normal, tieing up cash, so we can take up the slack in situations where delivery lead times have gone from 2-3 weeks to 12-18 weeks. We can still do most of our work, but nothing out of the ordinary, on a sensible delivery schedule. But it is only slightly related to Brexit as our suppliers are mainly in the Netherlands and Germany, where their businesses are similiarly pragmatic. More paperwork but not, so far, anything daftly bureaucratic.

Shipping costs are another subject entirely. We import a product from the USA. The cost per container has gone from £2,700 per container to £14,000. That affects the cost to the customer a lot.

I didnt say stop, but at the moment we are not imposing the checks and red tape on goods from Europe, in particular foodstuffs that were scheduled to come in at Brexit but have been delayed because of Covid. we will have to do that when the covid excuse is over as otherwise we'd be breaking the agreement and the law.

Customs checks are not about stopping imports.... but checking taxes have been paid, smuggling of goods, goods conform to UK standards, we are no longer in SM or CU.

Exactly the same on the EU side, as we divert from common rule book, UK goods meet their requirements.

One reason we left the EU is to control our borders, we are not doing that at all, in fact less checks than before.

Yup, "there is no good reason to impose customs barriers when you don't have to" that's why Brexit was an unwise decision.

Yes of course!
NI has a land border with the EU, there has to be customs and checks on movement of goods and people either between NI & ROI or between GB and NI.

Absolutely. We’ve reduced our free access to the world by about 90%.

Popcorn
I have been obsessively watching both Aldi and Argos waiting for one of them to become available!
We missed out by minutes for the Adli ones in store last week so I literally jumped on the Argos one within minutes of it being back in stock!
Aldis next Garden furniture event I believe is the end of April/beginning of May but who knows if it will include the sofas?

I've also looked at the range and asda! I also just missed the aldi sofa instore too and was gutted as some guy bought them all up Angry
Argos sofa lovely too and hope I'm not making a mistake holding out as they are gold dust right now!

My Aldi sofa arrived today. 15 days after ordering.

I logged on to the site at 5am, took me until 6am to get in, then kept refreshing the page and 8.03 the sofas appeared.

Just wanted to give the tip that worked for me.

A nice outcome. I signed up to receive notification when this was back in stock. I just got the email and have ordered the dress.

I hope it looks floaty and elegant rather than cheap and too flappy!
