EVERYTHING is "out of stock"

Literally having one of those days. Talk talk is down in my area so I'm ploughing through mobile data. But literally EVERYTHING I'm trying to order is out of stock and it's driving me mad! I'm trying to find garden furniture, a bin store, a new rug, clothes for my daughter - it goes on and on!!

Just ranting!!!!!

@Mojoj someone did yesterday saying only england voted leave

rizzo23 · 10/04/2021 10:35

Interesting article explaining the shortages of certain things. Seems to be a combination of everything unfortunately.

hellywelly3 · 10/04/2021 10:46

There’s tons of stock stuck inside shops that can’t open too.

DynamoKev · 10/04/2021 10:49

I’ve been able to get pepperoni for the last few months including this week with no problems. Maybe my part of the English Midlands never left the EU after all

thebillyotea · 10/04/2021 10:49

what shops can't open?

"Essential shops" are fully opened (and our concept of what is essential is interesting...) and "non essential shops" are closed for browsing but opened for click and collect.

There's not one single boutique here who is not trading. The smaller ones are doing it quite cleverly as well:opened for collection 2 or 3 days a week, and delivering locally the other 2 days. Good for them, they are following the rules.

little0miss0mac · 10/04/2021 11:00

@hennybeans

I'm really struggling to get clothes for my ds 13 who is right in between children's clothes and men's. Nearly impossible to find age 14-15 clothes and it's totally hit or miss with men's xs/ s fitting and being in stock.
@hennybeans try La Redoute. I just bought some things for DS there and they had a decent amount of stock for age 16 and also men's S.
little0miss0mac · 10/04/2021 11:01

(I generally go a size up with their own brand as it comes out quite small. But their returns are easy.)

Felyne · 10/04/2021 11:13

@EndoplasmicReticulum

It's not Brexit that is holding up my garden furniture but the boat wedged sideways in the Suez.

If you're a business with a website - why don't you provide the ability to select "things you can actually have" rather than having to click each individual item to find out if it's in stock or not?

M and S are terrible for that. Can add stuff to basket then get all the way to the pay screen before it tells you it's out of stock. I gave up a big order pre-Christmas because I just could not find an in-stock pair of PJs for one of my kids. Back and forward many times until I just gave up entirely.
forgetthehousework · 10/04/2021 11:17

Just back from local B&Q where they have lots of garden furniture available in store. I resisted the urge to buy it all so I could resell it on ebay ......

Felyne · 10/04/2021 11:28

School uniform is hard to come by right now as well. Tesco (the only open shop near me that stocks it) has about four of each thing in either the wrong size or colour. Online stuff from other places is out of stock in the size I need.
Lovely passive-aggressive text from DC's school last week saying that 'some children were not in correct uniform.' School has been closed for 8 weeks along with the shops! Did they forget?

MarinPrime · 10/04/2021 11:39

Just been listening to R4 program "Global Supply Chains". There was a discussion about the current shortage of consumer products.

They're saying it's due to a combination of increased consumer demand for stuff (pandemic, not spending money on holidays, going out etc) and the aftermath of the Suez Canal blockage.

Shortages likely to get worse over the next 8 weeks due the effects of the hold-up on essential components for manufacturing.

Brexit wasn't mentioned at all.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/04/2021 11:40

I can't get reclining garden chairs for love nor money unless I wanna pay £200 per chair (usually they're about £45)

M&S were well stocked for uniform online last week.

Oh dear that won’t please those seeking to blame brexit!

Aldi had some in yesterday. Didn’t notice the price but I’d think reasonable.
JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/04/2021 11:56

Ooh thank you @borntobequiet

XingMing · 10/04/2021 12:06

@MagentaGiraffe, it was a remark about DOGFOOD, which is manufactured in the UK, and need not come from China or Europe or Antarctica. I did not mention batteries. Metal components for batteries, possibly not made here. My other comment referred to garden furniture... which can also be made here. As for self-sufficiency in food or textiles: more could be made here, if there was a will, but commodities (wheat/cotton for example) have been imported since forever. Energy... effective tidal or nuclear power generation strategies would be preferable to fossil fuels. Bicycle parts... Raleigh was the world's first mass-producer but no longer.

I am sure leaving the EU will cost; my objection is not towards Europe, or its member states. I am all for membership of EFTA/EEA, just not a fan of the bloated bureacracy of the Commission. None of which makes me ignorant or ridiculous... it means our opinions differ.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/04/2021 12:09

Who needs an egg chair when you've got all the SoVrUnteE you could wish for?

Pandoraslastchance · 10/04/2021 12:18

Dog food but only in gravy.

What does my dog eat? Only gravy pouches. Fussy bugger.

Ladylunchalot · 10/04/2021 12:21

I managed to get padded folding garden chairs from B&M last night and they were only £22 each. I've been looking online for weeks and couldn't get any affordable chairs, everything was out of stock.
I did manage to get a plastic table from Argos for £50 (and they're still in stock!!). All set for summer, just need the weather to get warmer (in Scotland so won't hold my breath) Grin

LadyDanburysCane · 10/04/2021 12:26

[quote edballsfriendlyneighbour]Next have a lovely egg chair in stock. I love it but can't quite get myself to part with that much money

Out of stock in black. 22 weeks for the natural colour. Okay if you don’t want it for the summer!

PrincessTuna · 10/04/2021 12:32

I want a laptop from argos and it's never in stock. And I NEED it for mumsnetting work and college stuff!!

HalzTangz · 10/04/2021 12:33

A deck chair is £40 now, so think you will have to pay more.
LookItsMeAgain · 10/04/2021 12:46

Anyone looking for a laptop is probably going to have to select something that is in stock. I am involved with our internal IT purchasing and our suppliers have informed me that earlier in the lockdown there was a global (yes you read that right, a global) shortage of components for the display part of a laptop. You would have been much quicker getting a desktop PC rather than a laptop. Now the shortage is related to silicone and it is impacting on how quickly laptops can be manufactured. We've been trying to kit out our whole company with devices of various types that will allow us to be more mobile going forward but it's very slow and tedious.
I don't think there will be any quick turnarounds on technology orders for the foreseeable.
