Interview horror- I’ve blown it 🤦‍♀️

Zoom interview with two other people.

So excited, an interview for a job I really want was brought forward from tomorrow to today. I had worked hard on preparation and performed well.

Got to the end when they asked if I had any questions, as I opened my mouth my body let out a huge fart with no warning. I tried to muffle the sound by shuffling on my seat only to create a noise which quite frankly I think will haunt me. This high pitched long squeak ensued to which I’m sure I saw the ladies eyebrows raised a little, at which point she nodded in a sympathetic way, said ‘thank you for your time’ whilst leaning forward, clearly reaching to press the ‘end’ button.
I’m absolutely mortified that my body has let me down. I’m beside myself with shame.

Is there any possibility you think they didn’t hear it? If you interviewed someone who was a good candidate but let one out at the end would (could) you overlook it?

Please can someone reassure me, I just don’t know how to get past this.

My friend flicked a tooth cap out onto the table. She got the job. Very doubtful they noticed and if they did, it's not really something you would not give someone a job over. Good luck.

No you would not have blown it. The recruiting manager have a target to fill and they want the best person for the job. So they will want you if you are good. You'll be fine!

You should have done an accusatory stare at the interviewers to deflect the blame.

If home based and not customer facing could be alright.

sorry but yes they heard it. It might even work in your favour, you'll be the one they remember!

If I was the interviewer, I'd have found it funny you wouldn't have blown it over a fart. Sometimes they just slip out you know 🤷‍♀️

I’d have had to hang up just to have a good laugh. It wouldn’t put me off hiring you though!

How can you know it was a fart on Zoom though? It could be any sort of background noise. That's what I'd tell myself anyway!

I think it very much depends on whether you will be working from home or office based.

Completeky! I would very much sympathise. It could happen to anyone. Why bypass an excellent candidate because of this?

I'm sure they wouldn't have heard or if they did, sounds are different coming through the computer speakers so they might have thought it was a chair scraping on the floor.

It sounds like the interview went great! You would never not get a job because of an errant fart.

I once was so nervous that I drank the interviewer's glass of water. It was in front of them, not me. I drank it. It's funny now!

She had to cut you off sharpish at the end so that she and her companion didn't have to control themselves to have a good belly laugh, and possibly, a fart of their own.
We all do it OP - even your interviewers.
Blame it on your elderly dog next time, who is under the desk out of camera view.

If I was the interviewer, I would of pretended I didn't hear it but would of burst out laughing as soon as the call finished! It would not put me off a good candidate, if anything, I would remember you more!

I think wingedharpy is right - they cut you off quickly so they could laugh. Its exactly what I would do, tbh.

I really hate Zoom interviews, so well done for even getting to it. I bet you havent done anywhere near as badly as you think! Fingers crossed they offer you the job.
