Interview horror- I’ve blown it 🤦‍♀️

Zoom interview with two other people.

So excited, an interview for a job I really want was brought forward from tomorrow to today. I had worked hard on preparation and performed well.

Got to the end when they asked if I had any questions, as I opened my mouth my body let out a huge fart with no warning. I tried to muffle the sound by shuffling on my seat only to create a noise which quite frankly I think will haunt me. This high pitched long squeak ensued to which I’m sure I saw the ladies eyebrows raised a little, at which point she nodded in a sympathetic way, said ‘thank you for your time’ whilst leaning forward, clearly reaching to press the ‘end’ button.
I’m absolutely mortified that my body has let me down. I’m beside myself with shame.

Is there any possibility you think they didn’t hear it? If you interviewed someone who was a good candidate but let one out at the end would (could) you overlook it?

Please can someone reassure me, I just don’t know how to get past this.

Have I blown it? (Excuse the pun)

@Tistheseason17

If I had 2 applicants and they were both equally skilled - I'd choose the one that farted!! Real world candidate!!
Brilliant- I’d even go as far as to say it’s a good character building skill

@MrsDontDoMuch I'm sorry but this has made my day. I really hope you get it. Fingers crossed.

NotTerfNorCis · 08/04/2021 17:19

That reminds me of when I was interviewing someone else, and I shifted in my chair which made a very convincing fart sound. No one reacted in the slightest. Afterwards I made a comment to my fellow interviewer about the chairs making noise, but I'm not sure he believed me. Blush

riceuten · 08/04/2021 17:27

Floorboard and chairs creaking can sound incredibly fartlike.

Just as long as you didn't preface your emission with "Listen to this, too good to miss", and they didn't say "More tea, vicar?" you will be fine.

If you don't get the job, it absolutely won't be because of this - imagine the scenario - "Well, we'd love to offer her the job, but that fart sounded like she stepped on a duck".

thatsgotit · 08/04/2021 17:28

OP you're going to have to update us now, you know! Grin

The interviewers are human beings at the end of the day - if you were the best candidate I don't reckon they'd rule you out on the basis of whatever they did or didn't hear. Good luck! :-)

BrilliantBetty · 08/04/2021 17:29

I feel like this is not as bad as a really smelly silent one, f2f. There's a lot more room for misinterpretation, anyway!

OP please let us know if you get it..

This is the funniest thread I've seen on MN for ages 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

ZigZagInToTheBeach · 08/04/2021 17:33

Did an interview a couple of years ago where the guy asked to pop to the toilets before we got started...and didn't come back. We were starting to wonder where he'd gotten to when there was a massive commotion in the office. Apparently he'd been a bit hasty in zipping his fly up, had caught a delicate bit in the zip and caused himself quite an injury. Was apparently very dramatic, a lot of blood on the floor of the gents, first aider drafted in and he was eventually carted off in an ambulance for stitches, We did call him and offer to reschedule, but he unsurprisingly declined...I guess no one wants to start a job being known as "bleeding todger guy" Grin Lots of sympathetic wincing from my male co-interviewer though, I think he'd have offered him the job out of pity if he could.

ElsieMc · 08/04/2021 17:35

Just told my dh who regularly does this type of interview and he said he would give you the job immediately. He does doubt they heard it though op as Zoom is not that sensitive. I sometimes go in and interrupt his meetings complaining about the dogs being bastards and he mutes.

You sound a decent, well prepared candidate and are funny as well. I hope you get it, but if not would you want to work for such humourless people?

That said my dd was in a work meeting this morning when I colleague did not mute and they heard him pleading with his toddler to stop tantruming, nearly in tears. Him, not the toddler.

@Tooshytoshine

It was to teach abroad. They asked me what food is my home town famous for? What food would I bring to show my students?

I am from a seaside town and was trying to explain to a non-native english speaker what a stick of rock is - I mimed eating it. I was very nervous and it looked very vulgar.

I am dying laughing picturing your mime of 'eating rock' Grin

🤣🤣🤣🤣

This has just about finished me off.

Lockdown doesn't seem so bad when you can while away the hours reading such hilarious threads!

yuccaplant · 08/04/2021 18:05

This thread is the best I've read in ages!

You've got to get the job!

BlueSuffragette · 08/04/2021 18:14

OMG this thread has really made me laugh. GrinGrinGrin Please let us know if you get the job. xx

sunnydaleslayer · 08/04/2021 18:16

Well it's one huge benefit to zoom interviews, at least they didn't have to smell it!

ALongHardWinter · 08/04/2021 18:24

If I had been the interviewer,I'd have found it hilarious. In fact,I would have given you the job as you're definitely my kind of person. I don't care what anyone says, farts (especially unexpected ones) are funny!

Easeljeasel · 08/04/2021 18:28

Poor you, you’ll be absolutely fine though. Personally it would make me warm to you. Unless you took the approach of my DH who totally forgot himself when wfh in the kitchen recently. He not only let one out, but lifted a cheek from the seat and leant into the screen to (loudly!) do so. I had the misfortune of being in the kitchen making a cuppa at the time & had to point out to him afterwards that the woman on the screen may not have smellovision (lucky) but could very much both hear and see what he’d just done! Hmm

WhatHappenedToThose · 08/04/2021 18:39

Oh god, I have an interview first thing tomorrow this has definitely amused me! Good luck, op. You deserve the job for certain!

trappedsincesundaymorn · 08/04/2021 18:43

At my last interview (a Zoom one), I was answering a serious question when, with absolutely no warning, I sneezed. Not a delicate sneeze, oh no, it was a sneeze like an old man with half a ton of snuff up his nose. As my head jolted forward, I knocked the camera off the monitor. I looked at the screen to find the 3 people interviewing me laughing fit to burst. I fixed the camera back on, shrugged my shoulders and they ended the interview. Still got the job though.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 08/04/2021 18:49

Unbelievable!

VividImagination · 08/04/2021 19:10

I’ve interviewed a candidate that fell over in the car park on the way in and arrived a disheveled mess and another who burst into tears at the end of the interview. Neither incident affected my decision in any way. I hope you get the job.

Silvergreen · 08/04/2021 19:41

I would be more likely to employ you. Honestly. 😂

Congratulations on getting the job

Bananadramallama · 08/04/2021 19:54
