Interview horror- I’ve blown it 🤦‍♀️

Zoom interview with two other people.

So excited, an interview for a job I really want was brought forward from tomorrow to today. I had worked hard on preparation and performed well.

Got to the end when they asked if I had any questions, as I opened my mouth my body let out a huge fart with no warning. I tried to muffle the sound by shuffling on my seat only to create a noise which quite frankly I think will haunt me. This high pitched long squeak ensued to which I’m sure I saw the ladies eyebrows raised a little, at which point she nodded in a sympathetic way, said ‘thank you for your time’ whilst leaning forward, clearly reaching to press the ‘end’ button.
I’m absolutely mortified that my body has let me down. I’m beside myself with shame.

Is there any possibility you think they didn’t hear it? If you interviewed someone who was a good candidate but let one out at the end would (could) you overlook it?

Please can someone reassure me, I just don’t know how to get past this.

Have I blown it? (Excuse the pun)

@joystir59

I so feel for you! I farted loudly once in a very quiet moment in a very serious business meeting that I was chairing. Noone laughed afterwards which made it worse.
I would honestly walk out if I did that and never come back.
Scbchl · 08/04/2021 15:36

You should of just " oh was that a wee mouse". Thats why my stepdad use to always say 🤣

Becca19962014 · 08/04/2021 15:45

Nah not even close.

I went to a graduate scheme interview in a nightie (I ruined my interview shirt having spag bol at the hotel the night before and couldn't wear it, had nothing else). There were hundreds there all suited and booted. I got the job - my manager and I quote "loved" my sense of style!

Even decades later I'd love to know what those graduates would think of me getting the job!!

Justrying · 08/04/2021 15:48

If they're anything worth working for, they won't give it another thought. I know it's easy with hindsight but I think I might have blamed an imaginary dog or child, out of view!

Pleasure · 08/04/2021 15:49

I remember going for an interview years ago when I was full of cold, the interview went really well until the very end when I let out a very loud snotty sneeze. I didn't get the job 🤧😂

VenusTiger · 08/04/2021 15:50

Of course you haven't blown it - you've got intestines like the rest of us.
They probably laughed about it afterwards and decided it was nerves.

VaVaGloom · 08/04/2021 15:55

@KirstenBlest

Talk about blowing your on trumpet

sweatervest · 08/04/2021 15:59

i once burst into tears in an interview. (long story)

i didn't get the job, oddly enough.

also a doctor once impressed on me the importance of passing wind (i had just had an operation) ... so in fact you did a Good Thing

DahliaMacNamara · 08/04/2021 16:09

You've just reminded me that at my last Zoom meeting, I leaned forward to unmute myself, but unfortunately as I sat back the first sound that came from me was not my words of undoubted wisdom but my arse applauding in the way it knows best. I kept my poker face, but I don't think anyone was convinced.
I hope you get the job.

Moonstone1234 · 08/04/2021 16:12

I went to an interview for an admin role a couple of years ago and three people met me in a tiny room in a big teaching hospital. One of the interviewers was grossly overweight and had on a Mickey Mouse t- shirt that was far too tight for him and he was sweating buckets. The smell in the room got worse and worse from him and you could tell the other two just wanted everything over with.

It was such a waste of time for all of us and despite asking twice for feedback on the interview which I welcome I am still waiting. I presume I didnt get the role because it was two years ago .....

CaMePlaitPas · 08/04/2021 16:24

Don't worry OP, I'm sure you'll come up trumps.

Roselilly36 · 08/04/2021 16:25

You will be remembered OP, good luck and next time think quicker & blame the dog 😂

SelkieBoru · 08/04/2021 16:34

You wont be forgotten
Im dying laughing at smearing blood over yr face while you're being interviewed!

Cwassonk · 08/04/2021 16:42

There are some absolute classics on this thread Grin

If I was interviewing yes I would probably have cut the interview off because I am such a child and cannot help laughing at fart noises! BUT it would genuinely have no effect on whether I hired you or not.

Echobelly · 08/04/2021 16:43

If it was at the end of a good interview I really can't see them turning you down if they'd been minded to take you on. Just be glad it wasn't at the beginning, where it would have totally put you off your stride.

HeronLanyon · 08/04/2021 16:48

They really may not even have noticed or thought someone had coughed or similar.
If I had noticed and knew it was a fart
I would hang up v quickly to have an absolute belly laugh. I’d also think it would have been stress ! It wouldn’t affect my view of your interview at all.
Remember every person alive has had some kind of public bodily function mishap (and many far more significant than a fart (even in an interview).

HeronLanyon · 08/04/2021 16:48

Meant to say good luck op

It was to teach abroad. They asked me what food is my home town famous for? What food would I bring to show my students?

I am from a seaside town and was trying to explain to a non-native english speaker what a stick of rock is - I mimed eating it. I was very nervous and it looked very vulgar.

SuperintendentHastings · 08/04/2021 16:54

I would totally hire you just for this. GrinGrinGrin

Stovetopespresso · 08/04/2021 17:01

op I'm sure you absolutely blew them away and with any luck you'll get the job

pheonixrebirth · 08/04/2021 17:05

I'm sorry but I've got tears streaming down my face and my stomach is hurting from laughing so hard!!
Honestly though I bet they needed to go quickly so they could laugh.
And they certainly won't forget you- you will now be known as the farter!

kittycorner · 08/04/2021 17:10

You definitely didn't blow the job!! Hope you get it!!!

Tistheseason17 · 08/04/2021 17:11

If I had 2 applicants and they were both equally skilled - I'd choose the one that farted!! Real world candidate!!
