Kamala Harris
"Black Americans, & black men in particular, have been treated throughout the course of our country as less than human. Black men are fathers & brothers & sons... their lives must be valued... We're all a part of George Floyd's legacy & our job now is to honor it."

DuncinToffee · 21/04/2021 08:57

Joe Biden
"The guilty verdict does not bring back George, but through the family's pain they're finding purpose so George's legacy will not be just about his death but about what we must do in his memory."

"'I can't breathe,' those were George Floyd's last words. We can't let those words die w/him. We have to keep hearing [them]. We must not turn away. We can't...We have a chance to begin to change trajectory in this country. It's my hope & prayer we live up to [his] legacy"

Word of the day is 'suspire' (16th century): to let forth a sigh, and (finally) breathe out.

@DuncinToffee

Well said by David Alllen Green

The evidence was overwhelming

But because it was a white police officer who killed a black person, nobody - nobody at all - knew which way the jury would go

And that gap - the gap between knowledge and expectation - is what systemic racism looks like

This.

I posted with my SAffer hat on about the fires, thinking it wasn't relevant to this thread. But I haven't felt the need to take said hat off when considering Chauvin. Too much of this is familiar.

Having to contemplate that a jury might decide not to convict even after such overwhelming evidence, because of race, chills me to the bone.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/04/2021 14:09

I admit that I was not entirely hopeful that the jury would decide on a guilty verdict, let alone three of them.

Roussette · 21/04/2021 14:14

I watched a lot of the trial. And seeing 5 senior officers from his Police Department speak for the prosecution, I really didn't see how it could be anything else. But past history questions that belief of mine

U.S. voting rights activist and Democratic Party politician Stacey Abrams has been nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize for her work to promote nonviolent change via the ballot box, a Norwegian lawmaker said on Monday.

Abrams, whose work was credited with boosting voter turnout last year, helping Joe Biden win the U.S. presidency, joins a long list of nominees, including both former President Donald Trump and his son-in-law, former White House adviser Jared Kushner.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/04/2021 14:53

Goodness, won't Trump be spitting feathers if she gets it so neither he nor Jared Kushner does! (crossed fingers)

Though actually I would prefer it to go to Covax, or the Hong Kong Free Press, or Reporters Without Borders, or UNHCR. Of the other nominees we know about, I can't honestly see that Greta Thunberg has done a lot for peace exactly, even though she is a thoroughly good thing.

Stacey Abrams would absolutely deserve the Nobel.

Arizona Republicans to begin auditing 2020 ballots in effort to undermine election results
Audit will include a hand recount of all 2.1m ballots cast in Maricopa county in alarming consequence of Trump’s baseless lies.

Well, when they find that Biden in fact got more, not fewer, votes than they originally thought they will look a bit silly.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/04/2021 14:09

And anyway, what is point? The election result has been declared; changing it six months down the line cannot be done.

DuncinToffee · 22/04/2021 15:13

This from the article

Alarm over the audit has escalated in recent weeks after Republicans announced the firms that would be leading the effort. The company that will lead the audit, a Florida-based company called Cyber Ninjas, is led by Doug Logan, who supported several baseless conspiracy theories about the election. In December, he retweeted a post that questioned the validity of Maricopa’s ballot count and falsely said Trump may have gotten 200,000 more votes than were reported in Arizona, according to the Arizona Mirror, which first reported his involvement in the audit.

It’s not clear how Cyber Ninjas was chosen to lead the audit. Karen Fann, the president of the Arizona senate, did not return a request for comment

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/04/2021 16:34

Oh, now that is more worrying. They still can't alter the fact that the result of the ballot has been declared and they can't change that retrospectively, though.

DuncinToffee · 22/04/2021 17:46

More Arizona voting

amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/04/21/politics/arizona-bill-mail-in-ballots/index.html

(CNN)The GOP-led Arizona House on Tuesday passed legislation that would make changes to the mail-in voting process in the state, including stopping some voters from automatically receiving ballots.

The bill, a part of the ongoing Republican effort to restrict voting across the country, passed on a party-line vote and comes months after former President Donald Trump and his allies tried to overturn Arizona's 2020 election results.

Since it was amended in the House, the bill now must go back to the state Senate for final approval.

Sad slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/04/brett-kavanaugh-sonia-sotomayor-juvenile-life-without-parole

What an awful day for juvenile justice, for the rights of children, for the Constitution. A devastating, duplicitous, and disgusting decision that overturns a landmark precedent at the heart of Anthony Kennedy's legacy. A horrible, barbaric injustice

I wonder if that will influence Biden's commission looking into the size of the Supreme Court?

DuncinToffee · 22/04/2021 23:04

(CNN) The Senate passed with a wide bipartisan majority Thursday a bill denouncing discrimination against Asian communities in the United States, and creating a new position at the Justice Department to expedite reviews of potential Covid-19-related hate crimes.

The vote was 94-1. The lone vote in opposition was from Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley.
