Verdict has been reached in Chauvin trial. Reading as early as 4.30 NY time.

I was wrong that there was going to be a hung jury.

Roussette · 20/04/2021 20:38

Just heard that Across. Trying to work out what time that will be for us in UK.

9.30pm I think

AcrossthePond55 · 20/04/2021 20:42

@Roussette

Just heard that Across. Trying to work out what time that will be for us in UK.

9.30pm I think

Yes, 9.30 UK time. About 45 minutes from now.

I'm on the US West Coast so first I have to figure what time 4.30 is here then add 8 hrs since the UK is 8 hours ahead of 'my time'.

"Higher mathematics', indeed. lol

DuncinToffee · 20/04/2021 20:46

Haha, the tweet I saw kindly noted that it will be read in less than an hour from now.

PerkingFaintly · 20/04/2021 21:02

I'll be thinking of you all, Across, whichever way the verdict goes.

I know there will be demos anyway, and I hope they remain without violence.

Roussette · 20/04/2021 21:05

Yes exactly.

PerkingFaintly · 20/04/2021 21:28

I've put on CNN, who are explaining the charges. They're quite complicated!

PerkingFaintly · 20/04/2021 21:56

Ah someone on another thread helpfully posted a link which explains.

Breaking: Jury Reaches Verdict In Derek Chauvin Case; To Be Read Between 3:30 And 4 P.M.
minnesota.cbslocal.com/2021/04/20/derek-chauvin-jury-reaches-verdict-george-floyd-death-trial/

Chauvin faces three charges:
• Second-degree unintentional murder means causing death without intent by committing a felony.
• Second-degree manslaughter is causing death by unreasonable risk.
• Third-degree murder means causing death by an “eminently dangerous” act, showing a “depraved mind.”

PerkingFaintly · 20/04/2021 22:07

Guilty on all three counts.

AcrossthePond55 · 20/04/2021 22:07

Guilty on all counts!

DuncinToffee · 20/04/2021 22:07

Guilty on all three accounts!

Roussette · 20/04/2021 22:08

Guilty on all counts

PerkingFaintly · 20/04/2021 22:08

Possibly still room for an appeal, and doubtless they will try to make something of Waters' comments.

Why, why do politicians open their gobs while trials are ongoing?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/04/2021 22:09

He has been convicted of murder, according to the BBC.

I am surprised, but pleased.

PerkingFaintly · 20/04/2021 22:10

Bail revoked. Straight into custody.

DuncinToffee · 20/04/2021 22:11

Judge says sentencing will take place in eight weeks.

Roussette · 20/04/2021 22:19

I wonder what will happen now with the three other police officers... they are accessories, their trial is not until August.

gwenneh · 20/04/2021 22:21

Interesting to hear Jason Johnson on MSNBC talking about not being happy with verdict, stating it's going to be viewed as one bad apple and change can not occur until complete reform is made.

AcrossthePond55 · 20/04/2021 22:22

I'm sure there will be plenty of appeals. It's pretty much par for the course.

I wouldn't be surprised to see an appeal based on ineffective counsel. Chauvin's lawyer was woefully inadequate. I'm not saying the verdict was wrong by any means, just that his lawyer wasn't up to snuff.

AcrossthePond55 · 20/04/2021 22:24

@gwenneh

I think I see what he means. But I'd remind him that the longest journey begins with but a single step.
Roussette · 20/04/2021 22:30

Bernie Sanders
@SenSanders
The jury's verdict delivers accountability for Derek Chauvin, but not justice for George Floyd. Real justice for him and too many others can only happen when we build a nation that fundamentally respects the human dignity of every person.

DuncinToffee · 20/04/2021 22:34

Well said by David Alllen Green

The evidence was overwhelming

But because it was a white police officer who killed a black person, nobody - nobody at all - knew which way the jury would go

And that gap - the gap between knowledge and expectation - is what systemic racism looks like

Lweji · 21/04/2021 07:44

What a relief!

Sanders is right, though. I hope this is a first, or a significant one, of accoubtability.
Sadly, there were videos and brave witnesses. In many other cases will be harder to get a conviction
