We're currently re-watching again West Wing. We're in series 7 and the nuclear plant has just nearly gone into meltdown and the Chinese & Russians are getting aggressive in Kazakhstan.

I said to dh: can you imagine Trump making rational and considered decisions in that sort of pressured environment?

He failed to cope with Covid - and that was a crisis that grew so that he should have had time to listen to experts except that he knew better Hmm

Lweji · 14/04/2021 12:04

Has anyone watched Designated Survivor? Watching only now.
A bit too naive and definitely less quality dialogue compared to West Wing, plus it has a conspiracy running, which seems too real in light of the events since the last election, but still very much a nice counterpoint to the previous presidency. A well meaning President who doesn't quite know what he's doing, as an outsider, but is intelligent and breaks the mold in a good way.

It is interesting to me to see Kal Penn/Kalpen Modi as Press Secretary, considering that had actual White House experience during the Obama Administration. And as he was a consultant on the show, you have to wonder how much there is from his previous experience. Hmm

Roussette · 14/04/2021 13:43

I did watch some of Designated Survivor but found it completely ludicrous! I gave up after a while!
Must try West Wing

apnews.com/article/joe-biden-politics-birth-control-abortion-coronavirus-pandemic-eade03afcaeed23a900058d2eae1629f

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Wednesday began to undo a Trump-era ban on clinics referring women for abortions, a policy directive that drove Planned Parenthood from the federal family planning program and created new complications for women trying to get birth control.

The proposed rule from the Department of Health and Human Services follows through on President Joe Biden’s campaign promise to reverse his predecessor’s family planning policy, branded a “gag rule” by women’s groups and decried by medical associations as violating the doctor-patient relationship.

West Wing is excellent.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 14/04/2021 17:53

The West Wing is wonderful. Martin Sheen for Prez!

Bernie Madoff has died. I did not realise that Elie Wiesel was one of the people he robbed. Shock

I've just watched in the news. The US to finally leave Afghanistan on the 11th of September!
I hope it goes well.

'The US government is set to issue a wide range of sanctions against Russia, according to reports.

The move would be retaliation for cyber-attacks aimed at the US, including alleged interference in the 2020 presidential elections.

The sanctions, expected as soon as Thursday, target more than 30 Russian entities and include the expulsion of at least 10 individuals from the US.

Diplomats will reportedly be among those targeted.'

Another inherited problem for Biden to sort out.
The IRS. Some people are still waiting for refunds from last year.

Despite protestations of the contrary, right wing, ahem snowflakes, do not seem to have a sense of humour. Maybe why Trump resonated with certain groups.

'On Monday, a cohort of former Trump administration officials launched the America First Policy Institute, a think tank organization aimed at promoting "liberty, free enterprise, national greatness, American military superiority, foreign-policy engagement in the American interest, and the primacy of American workers," according to its website.

Trump quickly endorsed the effort, saying that the founders, which include his daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, "have my full support as they work not only to preserve the historic accomplishments of my administration, but also to propel the America First Agenda into the future."

It's the latest and best-funded, with an initial budget of $20 million example of how the 45th President and his supporters are building out a constellation of groups (political, legal and policy) that parallel the structure of the national Republican Party.'

@Cacacoisfarraige

I see Lindsey Graham is attacking the decision to leave Afghanistan. He had no problems when it was Trumps plan. What a turnip

On the other hand it’s heating up in Russia.

He did have problems when it was Trump's plan. He is on record as having opposed it, even though Trump had suggested it. So is McConnell, who is been vocal about it again. When the news first broke I assumed they were being howling hypocrites as usual, but when I checked I found that I was wrong and they were for once being consistent.

Marshall Cohen @marshallcohen

For the first time EVER, the US government said Russian agent Konstantin Kilimnik provided Russian intelligence agencies with the internal Trump campaign polling/strategy data he received from Manafort and Gates in 2016. Even Mueller didn't go that far. home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy0126

Brian Klaas @ brianklaas

To summarize: Trump's campaign chair and deputy campaign chair provided an internal strategy memo and private polling to a Russian agent who then passed it onto Russian intelligence agencies. The Kremlin then used that information to try to help Trump win the 2016 election.

Already people on social media are pushing back at the idea that this is 'packing.'

Unpacking.
