I live in a country where we have to show official ID to vote. But... we are ALL required to have that ID, which includes automatic voter registration, and also includes separate but linked tax number, social security number and health services number. But the same politicians that seem so worried about making sure only official ID is used to vote, will resist mandatory ID for all citizens.

If it were universal and not likely to be strongly biased in favour of whichever party thinks it will get or keep them in power, it might be less odious.

On another subject, I don't have a problem with having to show ID to vote. The problem is when they make it nearly impossible for certain groups to get that ID. And that's exactly what they're doing in the poorer and minority neighbourhoods. Closing and/or moving Motor Vehicle offices (where driver's licenses and state IDs are issued) out of the neighbourhoods where transportation is limited, raising the prices, increasing the documentation levels to make it hard to 'prove who you are'. It's infuriating.

I've just seen what Texas is up to over the week-end. I'm actually in tears, I can't believe this can happen so easily and quickly, people's rights just being wiped out because of these atrocious, appalling, racist, Fascists that make up the current GOP. This is so, so, wrong, and completely unChristian, to boot.

I think Doofus is picking up on Powell's "he can just be reinstated" bullshit. Wouldn't be the first time he's taken something crazy and started repeating it under the belief that saying it enough will make enough people believe it to make it so.
