(CNN)New York federal prosecutors investigating Rudy Giuliani have seized material from a wider array of individuals than previously disclosed, including messages from email and iCloud accounts they believe belong to two former Ukrainian government officials, as well as the cell phone and iPad of a pro-Trump Ukrainian businessman, according to a court document unsealed Tuesday.

Another mass shooting today, 8 people dead in San Jose, California Sad

Across the US, there have been 230 mass shootings so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Anniegetyourgun · 26/05/2021 20:55

Ah, that explains why Texas is further easing gun restrictions. They hate to be outdone by California.

lionheart · 27/05/2021 07:47

Also Texas:

www.buzzfeednews.com/article/peteraldhous/texas-winter-storm-power-outage-death-toll

'The state’s tally currently stands at 151 deaths. But by looking at how many more people died during and immediately after the storm than would have been expected — an established method that has been used to count the full toll of other disasters — we estimate that 700 people were killed by the storm during the week with the worst power outages. This astonishing toll exposes the full consequence of officials’ neglect in preventing the power grid’s collapse despite repeated warnings of its vulnerability to cold weather, as well as the state’s failure to reckon with the magnitude of the crisis that followed.'

Amazon is reportedly on the verge of buying MGM Studios for $9 billion. That, Colbert noted, would put Bezos in control of Trump’s old TV series, “The Apprentice,” as well as all of its outtakes and archives, which reportedly include racist comments made by Trump.

Ahhhh, the things you can do when you actually have money, rather than try to convince people you do.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 27/05/2021 14:21

I'd be amazed if there were not sexist comments as well.

Senate Republicans are expected to block as soon as Thursday a bill creating a commission to investigate the pro-Trump riot at the US Capitol on January 6, preventing a high-profile probe into the attack that led to the deaths of five people and about 140 police officers injured.

I don't see how the first amendment over-rides the illegality of sedition. I mean, if it did then people encouraging (say) bombing a mosque or a synagogue or a church would be legal, because it's their right to freedom of speech, and I'm fairly sure that isn't so.

www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-asks-judge-throw-out-capitol-riot-lawsuit-n1268544

'The Constitution provides that a president who is impeached and convicted in the Senate can, once out of office, be subject to criminal or civil actions. His lawyers argue, without offering any legal support, that the opposite must be true: A president acquitted in the Senate is beyond the reach of the courts over similar claims.'

edition.cnn.com/2021/05/25/opinions/merrick-garland-trump-mueller-honig/index.html

'(CNN)Judge Amy Berman Jackson saw right through the dishonest attempts of former Attorney General William Barr to paper over his inexcusable distortion of the Mueller report. The federal judge pulled no punches in her ruling this month ordering the release of a redacted Justice Department memo recommending that former President Donald Trump should not be charged with obstruction of justice in the special counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The decision of the new attorney general, Merrick Garland, to appeal portions of Judge Jackson's ruling is a mistake, and marks a missed opportunity to break cleanly from the fundamental dishonesty that defined Barr's term in office.'

Well, I'm back. But not quite back in the 'real world' yet, I've got some 'updating myself' to do. We avoided the news most of the time we were gone. Disney World was wonderful, living in a 'fantasy world' for two weeks. Our time in the Florida Keys passed in a Sailor Jerry & Coke-induced haze. Add in copious amounts of Key Lime pie. Bliss.

Driving through Doofus-Country was a bit of an experience. I hope my Canadian friends on this thread will pardon me for responding to certain questions from certain local-types with a shrug and an "I'm Canadian". 😉🇨🇦🇺🇸🤝

AcrossthePond55 · 28/05/2021 16:19

Hey!! That 'C A' was supposed to be a Canadian flag!!

Let's try it again

AcrossthePond55 · 28/05/2021 16:19

stupid macbook.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2021 16:38

I saw the Canadian flag on my iPad but not on my android phone.. Welcome back and it sounds like you had a great time, I feel quite jealous Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 28/05/2021 18:55

So I see that the Senate GOP has blocked the establishment of the 6 Jan commission. No surprise there I guess. Their attitude seems to be the typical 'Nothing to see here people, move along' one hears at any crime scene. We actually heard some GOP member (don't know who) say "Oh it looked like a typical day at the Capitol with tour groups and all". We were gobsmacked.

My understanding is that Nancy Pelosi will form a special committee in the House to do their own investigation.

Other ways and means.

Only 6 Republicans supported the proposal

Anne Applebaum @anneapplebaum
The relief some felt after the election is over. The Republican party is no longer committed to America's constitutional tradition. But we are a two-party system - eventually they will win again. And then we can't count on them preserving our political system.

'On the other side of Donald Trump’s turbulent presidency, the lawyers are waiting.

Leaving aside his Senate impeachment trial, mounting government investigations include a civil probe by New York Attorney General Letitia James, a criminal probe by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., and a federal probe by acting U.S. attorney for D.C. Michael Sherwin that may include Trump’s role in the catastrophic storming of the U.S. Capitol this month.

But already pending for the South Florida retiree is a trio of lawsuits that allege defamation, fraud and more fraud — all of which are helmed by one attorney.'
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/may/29/wrong-un-american-biden-republicans-texas-sb7-voting-rights-bill
This is like what the UK government is quietly sneaking into law about having to show official government photo-ID (passport, driving licence) in order to vote here.

Lweji · 30/05/2021 11:29

I live in a country where we have to show official ID to vote.
But... we are ALL required to have that ID, which includes automatic voter registration, and also includes separate but linked tax number, social security number and health services number.
But the same politicians that seem so worried about making sure only official ID is used to vote, will resist mandatory ID for all citizens. Hmm
