He certainly fits the GOP profile for electability, Lweji.

In the dead of night, the Texas Senate passed a bill that will effectively ban public school teachers from talking about racism, white supremacy or current events.

It already passed the House. On its way to be signed into law now.

Texas GOP Passes Bill To Stop Teachers From Talking About Racism
"It's going to have a chilling effect on social studies and civics teachers across the state," said Democratic state Rep. James Talarico.

That is beyond outrageous, @TheNorthWestPawsage. I thought Texas almost turned blue in the last election, didn't they? But obviously all the lunatics are still in charge of the asylum. Dammit.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 23/05/2021 15:54

Texas is still considered ripe for Dem picking but I think it's more likely to become a "purple" state - switching between the 2 parties.

From the Washington Post after Nov 5th results:
The “2020 Retrospective” attributes the across-the-board losses to three things: limited spending in the state, sub-par outreach to and mobilization of Latino voters, and the suspension of in-person voter contact due to the coronavirus that hindered efforts to turn out low propensity voters.
“We need to massively expand our voter registration ambitions,” according to the review conducted and authored by Hudson Cavanagh, the Texas Democrats’ director of data science. “From 2018 to 2020, we lost ground in terms of voter registration, losing about 26,000 net votes. However, there are more than enough potential registrants to flip the state if we invest in and execute effective programs at scale.”
...........
The report cites modeling projecting over 2 million “solidly Democratic unregistered voters in Texas," based on figures from the 2010 census. In turn, Texas Democrats want the national party to make major investments to turn the state “sustainably blue,” according to the report.

Wait... what about freedom of speech?

Everything is fixed by giving everyone a fucking gun.
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/may/24/texas-unlicensed-handgun-carry-bill?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
Supporters of the bill say it would allow Texans to better defend themselves in public while abolishing unnecessary impediments to the constitutional right to bear arms.

Once signed into law, Texas will join nearly two dozen other states that allow some form of unregulated carry of a handgun, and will by far be the most populous.

The National Rifle Association was among those supporting the measure, and a spokesperson called it the “most significant” gun-rights measure in the state’s history.

“A right requiring you to pay a tax or obtain a government permission slip is not a right at all,” said Jason Ouimet, the executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action.

Texas already allows rifles to be carried in public without a license. The measure sent to Abbott would allow anyone age 21 or older to carry a handgun as long as they don’t have felony criminal convictions or some other legal prohibition in their background.

Now that would be an excellent use of a UWO: pretty much exactly what they're for, indeed.

And in other good news, I saw not just an MP but a Tory MP on the news yesterday, in the context of the Belarus plane-diversion incident, who said that the UK needed to be cracking down on use of UK firms and facilities by Russian semi-gangsters.

Alas my memory is rubbish today and I can't remember his name or if he was talking of Russian govt or oligarchs, but he was definitely highly critical of Russian money floating round the UK.

It's significant that a Tory is pushing is back on this, because they're the current govt. The Russian playbook of recent years has been to support (probably multiple) political parties, then turn round to whoever wins the election and quietly say, "Ahem. We put you here, remember."

It could be overt with Trump, because he's narcissistic and dim and hasn't a patriotic fibre in his body; they've probably had to be a bit more subtle with UK parties, but have certainly been cuddling up to the Tories from all corners.

So it's a big deal to see a Tory publicly call for the Russian establishment to be refused service.

PerkingFaintly · 25/05/2021 16:59

On a related theme, last week an apparently fake "PR agency" with Russian links (supposedly based in London but clearly not) tried to pay influencers to spread false information about one of the Covid vaccines.

They included a nice little check list of familiar disinformation "hooks" for the influencers to include:
– the mainstream media is ignoring this story
– why are governments doing something they know is harmful
– draw your own conclusions

All very predictable stuff.

Influencers say Russia-linked PR agency asked them to disparage Pfizer vaccine
www.theguardian.com/media/2021/may/25/influencers-say-russia-linked-pr-agency-asked-them-to-disparage-pfizer-vaccine

The brief also included requests to “act like you have the passion and interest in this topic”, and to avoid using the words “advertising” or “sponsored” in posts or videos because “the material should be presented as your own independent view”.

Trump and his businesses have been under investigation in the state for more than two years by the Manhattan district attorney’s office. '

'Stephen Colbert says a big Amazon business deal could spell bad news for former President Donald Trump, who often targeted the company and its billionaire owner, Jeff Bezos, while he was in office.

Amazon is reportedly on the verge of buying MGM Studios for $9 billion. That, Colbert noted, would put Bezos in control of Trump’s old TV series, “The Apprentice,” as well as all of its outtakes and archives, which reportedly include racist comments made by Trump. '

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/05/2021 13:30

I mean, Trump is evil but he's stupid. Bezos on the other hand, isn't all that stupid...
