This is so awful.

Brett 'I like beer' Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual assault as a young man writes it off as untrue because he shouldn't be judged for what happened in high school.
But happy to lock up for life an abused 15 year old.

How Trump’s zombie Facebook page became a weird internet memorial.
www.latimes.com/business/technology/story/2021-04-23/donald-trump-facebook-page-banned-becomes-internet-memorial

At first glance, Donald Trump’s Facebook page seems like it’s been dead for months.

The former president’s last post is dated 3:14 p.m. Jan. 6, 2021, the afternoon of the Capitol riots, as he called for “everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful.” Not long after he published that, Facebook — and many other social networks — banned him indefinitely for inciting the riots, instantly turning the account into a time capsule of those final, chaotic days before his presidency ended.
But that’s not the whole story. Because like a whale carcass that sinks to the ocean floor, entire ecosystems popping up in the shadow of its slowly decomposing husk, the comments field below that last post is now a vibrant feeding ground where Trump’s fans and critics still converge, months later, to argue, troll and pay homage.

"commenting on a months-old post from a banned former president is a pale imitation of the direct line of communication with Trump that they used to have and want back."

Did they really think he read what they put there?

lionheart · 25/04/2021 09:10

They might.

Hey all! We hit the road last Wednesday and are heading for Disney World and the Florida Keys with our caravan. Fully vaxxed and wearing masks of course, unlike most of the locals in the states we've passed through.

So I'll be reading but not posting much for the next month as we're 'unplugging' for the most part.

Keep fighting the good fight!

Republicans still orbiting Trump dark star fail to derail Biden’s first 100 days
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/apr/27/joe-biden-100-days-republicans-orbit-trump?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

The former US president remains the unofficial leader of the party and exerts a massive gravitational pull on its senators, representatives, governors and state parties. Obsessed with “culture wars” and voter fraud, the Trump distortion field has made it difficult for Republicans to move on.^

“Trump is like a fire,” said Ed Rogers, a political consultant and a veteran of the Ronald Reagan and George H W Bush administrations. “Too close and you get burned. Too far away, you’re out in the cold. So the party spends a lot of time talking about the fire, managing the fire, orbiting the fire. It takes a lot of energy out of the party.”

Getting more worrying.

The Republicans’ staggering effort to attack voting rights in Biden’s first 100 days.
The effort has been unprecedented not only in its volume as more than 360 bills with voting restrictions have been introduced so far – but also in its scope.
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/apr/28/republicans-voter-suppression-biden-100-days?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

...Left unchecked, it will likely not only set the stage for Republicans to retake control of the US House in 2022, but also allow the Republican party to hold on to its political power by shutting a rapidly diversifying electorate out from the ballot box.

Usually when a political party suffers a defeat like the one Republicans did in 2020, they spend time trying to figure out how to appeal to more voters, said Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic senator from Minnesota.

Instead, Klobuchar said, Republicans are trying to shut out those who disagree with them. She pointed to Georgia, where Republicans responded to the first Democratic statewide wins in decades by passing a sweeping new voting restrictions, as a clear crystallization of this effort.

“That’s why I think it’s in such acute focus right now. It’s like in technicolor,” she said. “It is a raw exercise of political power.”

The constitution gives the US president little unilateral power over voting laws, a power explicitly given to the states, but Biden has done just about all he can to act alone against these efforts....

I do worry that the Republican Party will turn America into a theocratic dictatorship - since they can't win elections legitimately.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/04/2021 11:56

At not quite the end of his first 100 days, Biden has been able to say that it is now thought to be safe for Americans to meet in the open air without masks if they have been vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2.

Rudy, Rudy, Rudy.

Federal Investigators Execute Search Warrant at Rudy Giuliani’s Apartment.

Prosecutors obtained the warrant as part of an investigation into whether Mr. Giuliani broke lobbying laws as President Trump’s personal lawyer.
www.nytimes.com/2021/04/28/nyregion/rudy-giuliani-trump-ukraine-warrant.html

...One of the people said the investigators had seized Mr. Giuliani’s electronic devices.

Executing a search warrant is an extraordinary move for prosecutors to take against a lawyer, let alone a lawyer for a former president, and it marks a major turning point in the long-running investigation into Mr. Giuliani.

The federal authorities have been largely focused on whether Mr. Giuliani illegally lobbied the Trump administration in 2019 on behalf of Ukrainian officials and oligarchs, who at the same time were helping Mr. Giuliani search for dirt on Mr. Trump’s political rivals, including President Biden, who was then a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The United States Attorney’s office in Manhattan and the F.B.I. had for months sought to secure a search warrant for Mr. Giuliani’s phones.

Under Mr. Trump, senior political appointees in the Justice Department repeatedly sought to block such a warrant, The New York Times reported, slowing the investigation as it was gaining momentum last year. After Merrick B. Garland was confirmed as President Biden’s attorney general, the Justice Department lifted its objection to the search....
