So where can you buy a 4 bed detached for less than £450k?

Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

@ArtistInResidence if you wanted a more specific answer you should have asked a more precise question.

Cowbells · 06/04/2021 15:14

OP - if you love Wales, how about Herefordshire? £375k for this farmhouse - really rural but near enough to Hereford if you need a town.

LowlandLucky · 06/04/2021 15:22

Ayr, new build 4 bed 350, 5 bed traditional sandstone in a really good area 325

Kings Lynn has four beds for sale under this figure. Rightmove is your friend.

ThePants999 · 06/04/2021 15:41

Most of the country? I'm only 15 miles outside of London, and my house fits that description and was less than £450K 4 years ago, can't imagine it's much above now.

ArtistInResidence · 06/04/2021 15:41

The question I wanted an answer to is exactly the one in my OP.

Yes, I have said that we are looking to sell, which explains why we are looking at house prices and how I am so aware of the increase in the value of our own house and others in the area. Given the money we paid for it the increase seems crazy. It is a symptom of the SE to SW price increase creep.

Saltburn. Lovely area to live. Less than an hours drive in any direction and you will find yourself rural / town or a city. Low crime rate. Train station. It can be touristy but not on a mass scale.

ArtistInResidence · 06/04/2021 15:48

@Cowbells that's lovely, though it is next to a naffing great barn Grin
We can afford bigger. Hereford is a good idea. Thank you.

That's nice too @Recruit2020, I don't know Saltburn at all.

Carlisle but you might need subtitles for the first few months.

Cowbells · 06/04/2021 15:52

@ArtistInResidence I got the impression the barn came with the house!

Boph · 06/04/2021 16:00

I live in a small village in a rural area. My house is a stone built barn conversion and has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms double garage, large kitchen, utility, 3 reception, conservatory, nice garden, under 30 minutes from a city.
It was valued recently at £300k.

ArtistInResidence · 06/04/2021 16:12

@randomer I like Carlisle, though I prefer just East of there near the Northumberland/Cumbria border.

Do you think @Cowbells? I couldn't see that on the Rightmove details.

Where-ish is it @Boph? It sounds like France!

I could recommend a few but you wouldn't want to live there!

It's still all about the location not the property

East of Carlisle:
Hexham
Corbridge
Brampton

Are you saying the majority of the UK is somewhere you wouldn't want to live?

I live in a village in a national park; stunning views and countryside; nice people from a mix of demographics; organic cafe; loads of community activities; outstanding rated primary school; couple of miles from the nearest train station, from where there are direct trains to the nearest cities in >1hr (or once a day direct a direct train to London); lots of people choose to holiday here etc.

And the majority of the 4 bed houses here are easily under £450k. You could get what the OP is after with £100k change to spare. My village isn't particularly unusual - in fact it's considered to be relatively pricy for the area.

People need to open their eyes to what the rest of the UK (outside the SE) has to offer.

OP - your question was way, way too vague (and asking "Are there any areas left" was just plain silly). Make a shortlist of places where there are houses in your budget, then ask locals on MN for their opinions on what those areas are like to live in. The fact is that the list of "nice places to live in the UK for under £450k" is so long that you're only ever going to get a list of random place names.

So literally most of the North then?

What a snobby comment.

Glittertwins · 06/04/2021 17:58

North Yorkshire, about 15 miles away from York. 5 bed detached under £400k

randomer · 06/04/2021 18:06

450 is a fortune. The North is brilliant.

OP, if you like Carlisle, what about Cockermouth in Cumbria? Carlisle would be your nearest city (30 minute drive). It’s a lovely market town with some great restaurants, pubs and lots of independent shops. As it’s just outside of the Lake District National Park it is cheaper than places like Keswick (15 minute drive) although much more expensive than the towns on the West Coast less than 10 miles away.
Close to the hills/lakes and sea, it’s a really great place to live (I don’t, but know people who do).
450K would easily get you a really nice 4 bed detached with everything you’re looking for...
