Cheeky tourist used my address for their takeaway!!

I live near a park, so we get a lot of tourists in the area.

Today, some girl visiting the park ordered herself an uber eats delivery to specifically my exact address so I had a driver knocking on my door. I thought he must be in the wrong place so asked to look at the address so I could direct him, as that sometimes happens, but it was my full address on there! It's quite an obscure address as well as it has a different postcode to the rest of the street and the house has a name instead of a number, which we don't display so you would need to look it up to get the whole thing. There was even a description in the delivery instructions.

She wasn't close by to receive the delivery either and the poor driver was really confused and awkward and was trying to call her and she didnt pick up her phone, and he was stuck waiting there for quite a while going are you sure it's not yours, you dont know anyone called name that could have sent it, it's been paid for so I have to deliver it, the person who ordered it needs to be at the address it's ordered to. I felt so bad for him.

AIBU to think that is blo*dy rude?! I might not have minded if she had asked first or had been around to receive it but to me I just think its really inconsiderate. When she finally turned up I asked her if she didnt think it was a bit inappropriate and rude and told her not to ever do it again and she just acted like I had been super offensive and sarcastically told me to have a nice day.

Some tourists can be so lovely and others are just so self absorbed.

No wonder the bins get so full at the park then. They were not built for all and sundry to eat their pizza, Nandos, KFC etc in the park.

Restaurants delivering to parks should be charged a surcharge by the local authority and there should be a minimum £10 litter charge passed on to the customer.

I work from my car a lot and have done this a couple of times when I have forgotten my sandwich. However I always add "car on road outside [address]" and my registration plate to the order.

DarkMatterA2Z · 05/04/2021 07:45

Just take it and leave it outside your door so the driver can leave. I wouldn't be too careful with it either...I might accidentally stand on it and squash some of the items. If they knock on your door/ring the bell, don't open it and tell them through the letter-box to get off your property or you're calling the police.

Roystonv · 05/04/2021 08:05

Ubering a coffee is just so lazy and self indulgent and expensive and I am just blown away that anyone would do that. It really is another world to how we live.

HeeHiHoHum · 05/04/2021 08:24

I’ve done this a few times and have always intercepted the order as soon as the delivery driver arrives (which I track on my phone so there’s no chance of missing it). I usually walk around the area, not lurking outside any specific house, and time it so I’m walking up to the driver as they arrive.

If for whatever reason I wasn’t able to intercept (perhaps I’d been run over or befallen some other terrible fate) I wouldn’t try to get the delivery back from the address and hope they enjoyed it or threw it away.

This thread has made me see that if I wasn’t able to intercept, it might cause some anxiety, but I do think the chances of that happening are really very small as it would take an accident or something really catastrophic to stop me from being there well in advance of when it arrived.

Benjispruce2 · 05/04/2021 08:38

I think it’s not on to do this. It would worry me or my teen DC (if home alone)if someone was lurking around my property /drive.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 05/04/2021 08:52

This happened to us the other night, late, dark, semi rural location and we had a group of young men hanging around outside the house, climbing up on the wall as if they were coming over. Obviously we didn't know they were waiting for a takeaway so it was a bit disconcerting. Wasn't sure whether to do anything and then a takeaway turned up (no door knocking etc, they just took from car). We laughed with relief! It happened to a friend recently too. Can't wait for lockdown to be over!!!

EventuallyDistracted · 05/04/2021 08:59

I'm surprised drivers are allowed to hand it over to someone not actually in the house - what if people in the park saw a deliveroo driver coming down the road and decided to intercept it when it was actually ordered by the occupants? Do they check the names?

greenfrogs1 · 05/04/2021 09:22

I 100% would have accepted it and eaten it 🤫

LadyCatStark · 05/04/2021 09:31

@WeAllHaveWings

You got very involved in the delivery.

A simple, sorry no one hear has ordered anything, thanks bye and shut the door would be enough. Then it up to the driver to sort it out.

But why should it be up to the driver to sort out? It’s very well documented that their pay is shit and they have no workers rights. They shouldn’t have to deal with idiots for that.

As for hovering outside, what if the resident was elderly, that could be really worrying for them.

It’s funny how there’s 3 groups of peop on this thread:

Those who’ve had it happen to them: “YANBU, it’s a PITA.”
Those who have never experienced it before: “YANBU. That’s so cheeky!”
Those who do it: “YABU I’ve done it and it’s fine.”

YouKnowItsTrue · 05/04/2021 09:34

Can’t believe this is a thing. People are weird.

And I agree - why is the delivery person handing it over to some random who could be intercepting a genuine delivery to that address.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 05/04/2021 10:51

@Roystonv I mean I’ve never had a coffee delivery either, although I’ve done McDonald’s, sushi, lots of other things ubered or deliveroo’d... but surely it’s not that mind blowing? It’s not that expensive - if you’re going to treat yourself anyway to something why not ? I’m sure there are things you do in your life that are mind boggling to those who get coffees delivered. One of my friends at work will never join in with Friday treat lunches or put in to birthday collections because of money being tight and she says how we must all be rolling in it etc, however one of her kids does a mind blowingly expensive hobby and it’s no expense spared for their equipment etc, so I don’t see how she can judge us spending a fiver every other week on something !

EventuallyDistracted · 05/04/2021 10:57

Well, in some places it just isn't a thing, we don't have Uber, Deliveroo, Just Eats etc here, we do have local pubs and independent takeaways that deliver but usually quite a high minimum spend. I didn't even know you could get coffee delivered.

EastWestWhosBest · 05/04/2021 11:00

I would find it very annoying and rude, but I can’t quite say why.

LoudestCat14 · 05/04/2021 11:05

I can't believe the posters who glibly admit to doing the same thing. You do realise when you're putting that person's address into the app it will be stored there against their permission, in a breach of GDPR? But as long as you get your takeaway eh?

If this ever happens to me now I'm accepting the food and chucking it straight in the bin.

Do you actually know anything about GDPR? If you did, you’d know that isn’t the case.

...do you understand GDPR? An address is something you see on google maps, in this case not even linked to a resident. Are you scared about deliveroo finding out there is a 12 park terrace, as seen on google maps?!?
LoudestCat14 · 05/04/2021 11:17

Ah, okay, I got muddled about GDPR, I stand corrected. I still think it's fucking cheeky beyond words to use someone else's address for a delivery and the girl's reaction – no apology or thank you just sarcasm – underlines what a self-absorbed, entitled society we've become.

PinkTonic · 05/04/2021 11:24

I think there is potential for the address to be retained on multiple databases and shared for marketing purposes, which would be annoying for the resident.
Anyway, if you have to give an actual address to get a delivery, that’s clearly a reason not to give one that isn’t yours. If you aren’t forced to give an address, because it’s fine to get a delivery in the street, then don’t give an address, give a landmark. Plenty of responses on here saying that it does impact the household, even if you aren’t aware that your particular deliveries have, so take note and stop it.

@Tereseta

Next time keep the takeaway! Very strange and entitled behaviour
What's strange and entitled about paying for your own takeaway? They weren't asking the op to cook them a meal
DrSbaitso · 05/04/2021 11:33

Please tell me you do understand that nobody is annoyed about them paying for the takeaway. Please tell me you do understand that.

DrSbaitso · 05/04/2021 12:14

Oh don’t be so condescending.

Then don't be so absolutely disingenuous as to pretend that you think the issue is about paying for the food. What sort of response do you expect?

You were pretending, right?
