Just saw Easter Parade is on today. Would love to try watching some old films but not sure I'd like them. Which ones are good for novices like me?

Our dancing daughters is my favourite. It’s really hard to get hold of now. I watched it on YouTube.

ThePlantsitter · 04/04/2021 11:20

Ooh I love Easter parade! There are quite a few classic films on iPlayer of you have a look. We rewatched meet me in St Louis the other day, ace (silly).

My favourite is the African Queen with Katherine Hepburn and Bogie. Made the kids watch it and they found themselves enjoying it despite themselves! Grin

Gerla · 04/04/2021 11:21

Depends what you count as old!
Some like it hot
Safety Last - silent but really good
Singin in the rain
The Bishop's Wife (always gets a mention on mn so thought I would get in first!)
North by West

Don't bother with South Pacific!

Gerla · 04/04/2021 11:21

*north by Northwest!

Gerla · 04/04/2021 11:22

@theplantsitter we watched it last week and even ds11 enjoyed it although I had to explain quite a lot.

Harvey
Mr Smith goes to Washington
Gaslight
The night of the Hunter
You can’t go wrong with old Hitchcock films and James Stewart films.
I find old films comforting. I think its to do with the perfect manners and the clothes. Women in day dresses (though I love Katherine Hepburn’s trousers too) and men in suits.

CatChant · 04/04/2021 11:25

The Night of the Hunter - 1955 version.

Pollypudding · 04/04/2021 11:25

You can’t go wrong with old Hitchcock films and James Stewart films.
Rear window and Vertigo are both brilliant. I live in a flat overlooking neighbours and like to imagine myself in the former. Haven't spotted any murders yet though!

Which is the best version of Gaslight?

ohfuschia · 04/04/2021 11:27

To Kill A Mockingbird

Wiglio · 04/04/2021 11:29

Yield to the night, Diana Dors

MrsOrMiss · 04/04/2021 11:29

The Ghost and Mrs Muir
Kind Hearts and Coronets
Goodbye Mr Chips

And the newer classics
Labyrinth,
The Princess Bride
The Decoy Bride

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 04/04/2021 11:30

Swing Time and Shall We Dance are the best Astaire/Rogers movies IMO.

Kind Hearts and Coronets is brilliant.
Some Like it Hot went down a storm with my 17 year old DD.

Brainwave89 · 04/04/2021 11:30

Brief encounter. A lovely well worked film, with a woman at is centre navigating the social constraints of the 1930s whilst being tempted by a dashing stranger. In the end both see it is not possible, and there is a lovely scene at the very end where her husband says I do not know where you have been, but I am glad you came back to me... lovely stuff.

GillBungalow · 04/04/2021 11:31

North by Northwest
Charade
My Fair Lady
A Matter of Life and Death

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 04/04/2021 11:34

I love the old original Wizard of Oz. I had it on an old fuzzy VHS as a kid. The cover was a slightly embossed 3D case. Worn down because I'd watched to so much
