Just saw Easter Parade is on today. Would love to try watching some old films but not sure I'd like them. Which ones are good for novices like me?

Rosemarys baby and The Birds

I never get bored of The Searchers.

I Know Where I'm Going - a Powell & Pressburger film. Such a good, quirky film, and the ending is glorious, so romantic. The female lead is Wendy Hiller, who was also Eliza in a film version of Pygmalion, the original play that that was made into My Fair Lady.

lidoshuffle · 04/04/2021 14:13

@Chemenger, the captain's ghost is so dashing, Gene Tierney so beautiful, and the scene at the end where they walk off together...sniff

lidoshuffle · 04/04/2021 14:16

I love Powell and Presssburger, and Cavalcanti. They produce a yearning nostalgia for a time I never even knew.

cariadlet · 04/04/2021 14:43

Anything with Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart or James Stewart

Anything directed by Hitchcock, Frank Capra or Powell and Pressburger.

The Ealing Comedies

Mildred Pierce
Double Indemnity
The Night of the Hunter (original version)
Laura

2 slightly less well known ones:
Seance on a Wet Afternoon
Bunny Lake is Missing

An Affair to Remember and the Ghost and Mrs Muir was wonderful. The actress was so beautiful. I have always wanted to live in Gull Cottage

Moonstone1234 · 04/04/2021 14:50

You forget the Ghost and Mrs Muir was in black and white.

Loving this thread, I adore old films - loads of oldies I want to rewatch have been suggested here!

Some of my favourites - Roman Holiday, A Taste of Honey, Midnight Cowboy and the original Thomas Crown Affair.

mogtheexcellent · 04/04/2021 15:07

If you watch easter parade and like it then you definitely need to watch singing in the rain.

I love screwball comedies. Either cary grant or ginger rogers are great. Some on iplayer at the moment.

Mine is The Cranes Are Flying (Russian: Летят журавли), it's a 1957 Soviet film.

GillBiggeloesHair · 04/04/2021 15:23

Gone with the Wind, Brief Encounter and Ice Cold in Alex.

The Ghost and Mrs Muir is my favourite too, I’ve never come across anyone else who remembers it.

My favorite too, it absolutely lovely and has my dream cottage in it. An old sea captains house up on a cliff. I'm going to look for it now!!

GillBiggeloesHair · 04/04/2021 15:26

I forgot The Big Country, the soundtrack!

DynamoKev · 04/04/2021 15:26
