i went to show my dd and her bf a lovely house, on a public footpath, yesterday, which i had discovered the previous weekend, it is famous, lived in previously by a famous person
it has a moat.
the public footpath goes passed it,
some people, probably staff shouted at us that it was private

a bit later we looked at a lovely cottage and the presumably owners came by smiling happily at us,

aibu to go back to the large house every bloody day

I'd try and think of some better things to do than considering going every day to someone's house for a gawp and to annoy them.
There's a big world out there to enjoy.........

Bluntness100 · 04/04/2021 08:48

I live in an old house where someone famous used to live, there is a public right of way past it, where lots of dog walkers, and groups of walkers/hikers use,

In general I’d say they are very respectful. But we do have some who stop and point ans take pictures. It does feel a little intrusive sometimes even though they can’t see in the house. For example I’m coming down stairs and look out the window ans see a group of twenty people standing looking and pointing. I’d never dream of moving them on, but it does feel like im a monkey in a cage when it happens.

I suspect you were doing more than just standing on a public foot path, becayse if that was the case no one would have used the phrase it’s private, but just don’t want to admit it.

sammylady37 · 04/04/2021 08:49

Would you like someone bringing their children to stand on the path outside your house and look in? Even if they couldn’t see in to your house itself but were looking into the grounds/garden?

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 04/04/2021 08:51

no pictures were even taken.

Getting confused now. Rude neighbours or staff? And who is the young girl? I do think you are overthinking it. Just apologise (even if you think you've done nothing wrong) and move on would be my way of thinking.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 04/04/2021 08:55

i was assuming staff but who knows - i didnt ask, they appeared to live in the house outside of the moat.
poor diddums.

as long as you stick to the public footpath you are ok
i guess on reflection they would not have shouted at someone older than my 21 year old dd.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 04/04/2021 08:56

i will take my dh there, who is not 21, and see if he is shouted at!

Christ on a bike. Get a life.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 04/04/2021 08:58

This is beyond weird. You need a hobby.

GraduallyWatermelon · 04/04/2021 08:58

Generally those who live or work there will know whether its private or not. I'd be more inclined to believe them!

TheUndoingProject · 04/04/2021 09:01

Your determination to cause irritation to others is bizarre.

I would hope both you and your DH have better things to do.
Bluntness100 · 04/04/2021 09:02

Um, you’re clearly older than 21 and they apparantly shouted at you.

Carpedimum · 04/04/2021 09:02

@cupofdecaf - the phrase ‘Right to Roam’ is well-established and is in no-way misleading. I worked on the introduction of the CROW Act, byelaws, and in policy at a NP, I’ve got a pretty good grasp of what it means (in England).
Clearly, there is no provision for ‘gawking in windows’ as you put it, but the property OP describes has a moat, she’d have to have pretty special vision to see inside at those distances.
Surely, if anyone buys an historic property with a Public Footpath running through it, people being interested is to be expected?

Nith · 04/04/2021 09:04

You're going to be so disappointed if you flog over there every day and get ignored.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 04/04/2021 09:05

discovering footpaths is my hobby folks

mygenericusername · 04/04/2021 09:06

You sound deranged in all honestly. Really stop looking in peoples gardens, moats or whatever it is you claim to have been looking at and give the home owners some privacy.

We have a lot of tourists here. We own a historic building. Rarely have I seen anyone gawping down my drive. You’re being weird.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 04/04/2021 09:08

i was not gawping either

You've discovered it. Now leave those people alone, your behaviour and your attitude are not normal.
NinthCircle · 04/04/2021 09:11

I’m still not clear about the point you’re making in your original post. Nice smiley people live in cute cottages, nasty, shouty ‘staff’, or possibly neighbours, live in houses with moats?

I used to live in a cute cottage outside of Oxford, where a public footpath ran through the garden and right under our kitchen window. Most people were fine, but sometimes I would be doing the washing up and three or four heads would be pushed up against the glass, trying to see inside, people would ring the doorbell because they thought I might want to show them round the house, and a few times I found people having a picnic in the garden, once actually on our garden furniture. Some people have ridiculously inflated ideas about what a public footpath entitles them to do...

Bluntness100 · 04/04/2021 09:12

Well if discovering foot paths is your hobby, crack on, you’ve discovered this one,

I’m also not sure why you keep saying you weren’t gawping, you even start by saying you specifally took your daughter and her boyfriend to show them the house. So were either gawping or someplace you shouldn’t habe been.

IamaBluebird · 04/04/2021 09:17

We always have a look at any lovely houses and gardens when we’re out walking, just a glance not a stop and stare.
The owners of one cottage had put paper bags with seeds from their garden on the wall for people to take. Made my day.

loobylou10 · 04/04/2021 09:17

Well aren't you a peach. Weird!
