Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

It’s called basic manners...!!

ChaosMoon · 03/04/2021 12:45

Human decency.

I had a friend who thought like you do. Her general attitude to strangers made her really unpleasant to be around. Hence the past tense.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 03/04/2021 12:46

its polite

SionnachGlic · 03/04/2021 12:46

Manners, courtesy, politeness, acknowledgement, humanity.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/04/2021 12:46

I say thanks when I get off a train or tram. Before I realise there is no one to day Thankyou to.

TheRosariojewels · 03/04/2021 12:46

I was born and bred in London and used buses extensively in my youth. I have always thanked the driver, most people used to if I remember correctly.

Lulu1919 · 03/04/2021 12:46

It's good manners
When I leave Tesco and the security person is sitting by the exit I always say thank you as I leave .
I say thank you when I'm served food in a cafe or a drink at the bar or I'm served anything !!,

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 03/04/2021 12:47

i also say thanks when i cross the zebra crossing and when a car lets me go first, when someone waits so i can walk by safely at a distance (covid related)

Happytobejabbed · 03/04/2021 12:47

Why do people do this?

Because its good manners.

My grandfather used to seek out train drivers to thank them after a journey. ( this was way back in the age of steam, he’d be about 140 if he were still alive! )

Bubblegumfarts · 03/04/2021 12:48

I opened this thinking it was about fortnite and having to say thank you to the flying bus driver. Of course you say thank you to a real life bus driver, it’s called having manners.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 03/04/2021 12:48

You always say thanks, god some people are so basic.

EvilPea · 03/04/2021 12:49

@tedx

Never heard Londoners say it but then again they are happy to just step over you on the street if you've fallen dead as you're in their way! 😂
Former Londoner here. Was the norm for me and everyone I knew growing up. If I hadn’t done it, I’d have been marched back to the front and told to do it by my grandmother. It’s just the same as saying thank you to anyone providing a service.
JackieTheFart · 03/04/2021 12:49

Are you not British?! Saying thank you for everything is ingrained!

EvilPea · 03/04/2021 12:50

And sorry. Even if your not sorry or in the wrong Grin
Eesha · 03/04/2021 12:51

i do and my kids do!

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/04/2021 12:51

It's basic good manners. I also thank waiters, doctors, shop staff etc.

Quaagars · 03/04/2021 12:52

@Skinnytailedsquirrel

In London it's become a virtue signal. People exit from the middle of the bus and say it so that the passengers hear. The bus driver sitting behind their plastic shield certainly doesn't. Many of the drivers are maniac drivers anyway and that just emphasises the virtue signalling bit of this.
Saying thank you is virtue signalling now?! Bloomin' eck.
Gwenhwyfar · 03/04/2021 12:53

@WiseOwlOne

They do this in Ireland. I don't remember people doing it in the UK, but maybe I was the rude one not saying thank you there.
Probably depends where. It's done all over Wales. In Cardiff and I suppose surrounding areas it's 'Thanks Drive' which I found odd coming from north Wales because we wouldn't address the driver by his job unless we really needed his attention!

I suppose it might not be done in areas where there are hundreds of people on a bus or where people can get on and off by a middle door.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/04/2021 12:54

I do and have taught DC to do so too. It is basic good manners and hopefully sends out the message that you value the role of bus drivers. Everyone providing customer-facing roles deserves equal acknowledgement of their part in society functioning well, particularly over the past year with the pandemic.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/04/2021 12:54

We thank everyone who has provided a service don't we if we're next to them e.g. checkout person in the shop.

I'm in England and have I have always said thank you. Basic manners.
MsTSwift · 03/04/2021 12:55

In the south west you say “cheers drive” in a broad Somerset accent

notacooldad · 03/04/2021 12:55

Are you a bit thick?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/04/2021 12:56

@AndromedaGal

I’m a Southerner. It really offends me when ppl say “thanks” in general, it’s just so completely unnecessary. But particularly when you’ve already paid for a menial service.

I also don’t like poor people, or people who smell. Or people in need. Or children. In fact, children are the worst. And don’t get me started on parents.

fedupofbed · 03/04/2021 12:57

Because I'm thankful for the service they provided. Especially in these times.
