Says thanks to bus driver

Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

That's why manners are phasing out now with rude attitudes like this.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/04/2021 12:57

Customs do vary in different places. I can see why this would not be very practical in big cities and on big, busy buses.

Growing up, people would also sometimes stand at the front to chat to the driver. I don't see that in cities now. We could also flag down our local independent bus even if we weren't at the official stop.

Annebronte · 03/04/2021 12:57

Because it’s courteous and pleasant? The pupils I teach thank me on their way out of my classroom, even though I have been paid to teach them.

MrsDThomas · 03/04/2021 12:57

Saying please and thank you are basic manners.

If you think its wrong you have some serious issues with manners,

It's not necessarily good or bad manners.

I live on the continent now and thanking the driver is not a thing here. He/she wouldn't hear you anyway going through a middle door. They went through a few years of 'British style' making people get on by the driver, but that was changed with Covid to protect the driver.
That doesn't mean people are less polite, it's just different habits.

PaperMonster · 03/04/2021 12:59

I don’t use a bus v often, but always thank the driver when I do. If it makes them feel appreciated in their work, then where’s the harm?

Cactus1982 · 03/04/2021 13:00

I always do it. It’s just basic manners and common courtesy. I wonder if the OP is one of these people who never says Thank You to people who hold the door open for her or when she’s driving never acknowledge other drivers who let them pass?

FreekStar · 03/04/2021 13:01

What a strange OP! Are you from another planet?

hollyandkit · 03/04/2021 13:01

Because it just makes the world a slightly nicer place. I always give a wave to the driver that slows down at a zebra crossing even though I'm in effect saying "Thanks for not running me over, much appreciated!". And I love an enthusiastic proper Bristolian Cheers Droive.

andyoldlabour · 03/04/2021 13:02

We have noticed when we are out for a walk, and move out of the way of people coming the other way (social distancing), that it is older people like us who say thank you every time, yet many of the younger people just plough on through without acknowledging us.

Susie477 · 03/04/2021 13:03

Well done, OP! Top goading. Wink

ThreeKneeRepeater · 03/04/2021 13:07

In Bristol it’s the law to say ‘Cheers Drive’ when you get off.

ILoveSlipperss · 03/04/2021 13:09

I’m really glad I don’t know you in real life.

Twenty2 · 03/04/2021 13:10

I don't think the OP is coming back. They've dropped their GF stink bomb and done a runner, whilst rubbing their hairy hands and giggling.

expectopelargonium · 03/04/2021 13:13

It's an old-fashioned thing called good manners.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 03/04/2021 13:15

I'm a train driver and because of where we sit passengers can't really do this. But when they knock on the window and give a thumbs up, it really makes me smile 😀

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/04/2021 13:21

@Susie477

Well done, OP! Top goading. Wink
It's pretty impressive, isn't it?

I would thank OP but it obviously is a labour of love for them - why should I thank them for something they enjoy doing?

luckylavender · 03/04/2021 13:22

Wow!

diamondpony80 · 03/04/2021 13:23

I say thanks to pretty much anyone who provides me a service. Waiter, hairdresser, bus driver, shop assistant, cleaner etc. I thought it was just basic good manners to acknowledge a job well done. Just because you’re paying for a service doesn’t mean you can’t be nice and show a little gratitude.

ferneytorro · 03/04/2021 13:24

Are you my mother? Remember being a little girl and saying thank you to the driver when I got off and she bollocked me. Bloody odd.

RedToothBrush · 03/04/2021 13:26

Cos it polite.

You say thank you when you are given service anywhere else if you have good manners.

Why wouldn't you say thanks?

Amanda87 · 03/04/2021 13:26

OMG Are you serious??????????????
You paid for it, but what's wrong with spreading joy and good manners?
Geeeeeez you people!

gottenhaitch · 03/04/2021 13:27

This is quality bait.

thatsgotit · 03/04/2021 13:27

OP weren't you brought up to say please and thank you?

Pebbledashery · 03/04/2021 13:31

It's just good manners. Something you clearly lack.
