AIBU to be uncomfortable about this kind of breastfeeding picture posted on social media?

I’m not going to post the actual picture as then I’d just be getting more people to look at it but a small time influencer has posted a picture of her and her baby breastfeeding, both very clearly naked, in order to advertise some breast milk jewellery.
You can barely see the jewellery but can clearly see mum and child are naked - very flattering shot of the mother and a lovely caption about how precious breastfeeding and how the jewellery is the perfect memento.

I am perfectly prepared to be told I am being completely unreasonable but I feel uncomfortable about the picture. The child has no say over this - anyone can now view this picture of them both naked. It’s going out to thousands of random followers.

I breastfed my child, am pro normalising breastfeeding but feel like I’m this context this picture isn’t about the breastfeeding at all despite the caption.

I also feel really uncomfortable about using a picture of the child in that state to advertise the jewellery?

Maybe I’m old and out of touch and I know, I know, I should mind my business but I don’t follow her it popped up as a sponsored post on my feed and it’s bothered me.

Honestly if that's the photo it's a bit odd as why would be downstairs naked with your phone? Or is my life very boring. That would have been a dressing gown, slippers and hedge hair shot for me! It's the seemingly v posed and polished nature of it that is a bit disingenuous. That said I'm sure post shower i did bf just like this, but in my room, nowhere near a phone and nowhere near as glossy so it certainly happens. We're all different. I would imagine being an influencer motivates people to do things and post things they wouldn't have otherwise.

oblada · 03/04/2021 08:05

Nudity doesn't bother me, it's a pretty shot and as an influencer she is sharing it with the world. I can't see what issue her kid could have with it in the future to be honest.
Fwiw my aunt did some modeling when she was younger and as part of that she was part of an advertising campaign to promote breastfeeding (45years ago) and the picture she did then (which ended up on billboards and such) was of her breastfeeding my cousin. It was a close up shot showing my aunt's chest and face, aunt is naked from the waist up and my cousin as a baby is fully naked and breastfeeding.
This is just to say that there is nothing new in what this influencer did. My aunt had a copy of the picture in her house. It wasn't my cousin's favourite poster/picture but she's not traumatised by it.

Breastfeeding jewellery is just a memento for women who want to celebrate their breastfeeding 'journey' in some way. I can relate. I've considered doing it but so far haven't. I'm still breastfeeding 2 children anyway so I have time to decide. In the end I'll expect I'll have breastfed/expressed continuously for close to 15yrs so it's a massive chunk of my life and a nice jewellery (if I find something I like) would be cool lol

@SoMuchBadInfo

Yes yabvu.

Why do you care what another woman does with her child, her own breasts?? Are you jealous that yours don't look as good?

Get over it and stop bringing women down fgs.

You have no right to call yourself "breastfed friendly" or whatever other silly term you used in your OP when your obviously not.

Women have fought for hundreds of years to have their bodily autonomy and you don't get to decide that yours is okay but hers isn't.

Are you the ‘influencer’ @SoMuchBadInfo? Or her mum or her mate?

Because you’ve spectacularly missed the point the OP was trying to make.

Also breast milk jewellery sounds 🤢

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 03/04/2021 08:06

That is a good point 5128 and normalising it to young women is great.

ButIcantsitonleather · 03/04/2021 08:08

@Nottoday1

That isn’t the picture. I’ve attached. I follow her and knew straight away which picture she meant. It’s a beautiful photo but I’m not sure I’d share it.
Why are they both naked in the hallway? How did this occur?

“Come here take all your clothes off, Mummy needs content for her Insta page.” Confused

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 03/04/2021 08:08

Don't understand the boakness of the bm jewellery. I don't have any but I do wish I'd done something when those years were over. A friend got a cool painting of boobs basically, modern art style, not hers!

RampantIvy · 03/04/2021 08:13

I think it is the fact that it is so clearly staged that puts people off.

It just doesn't look natural. It shouts out "look at me" rather than "this is the best way to feed your baby".

Sorry, but the idea of breastmilk jewellery does give me the ick. Something like that is not going to promote breastfeeding IMO.

CloudFormations · 03/04/2021 08:13

I think its an excellent way to promote breastfeeding to a demographic who may otherwise not be keen.
Glamour sells, to women as well as men.

Anyone who decides to breastfeed for the glamour may be in for a bit of a shock when it comes to the reality. I happily breastfeed my baby, but glamorous it ain’t.

UntamedWisteria · 03/04/2021 08:19

Breastfeeding jewellery?

What the actual fuck?

That must be the pinnacle of self-obsession ...

Fembot123 · 03/04/2021 08:21

I think nudity and breasts should be normalised so I’m biased although saying that I wouldn’t make the choice for my child.

TheKeatingFive · 03/04/2021 08:23

I don’t see anything wrong with the jewellery.

Why is it ‘the pinnacle of self-obsession’ Confused?

SofiaMichelle · 03/04/2021 08:24

...the jewellery sounds mawkish and boak!

Nothing comes up when I google them. Are they well known making for breast milk jewellery?

Timper · 03/04/2021 08:26

Wonder if you can send off some of your formula to made into jewellery? Very proud of my formula feeding journey and would love a momento before child goes onto cows milk.

MagicSummer · 03/04/2021 08:28

I have to say I am rather tired of women taking their clothes off, taking a photo and splashing it all over social media, whether they are breastfeeding or not! Does anybody really want to see other people's naked bodies sprawled across the screen? I most certainly don't!

Isn’t Formula powdered cows milk anyway?

😂🤦🏼‍♀️
CornishTiger · 03/04/2021 08:32

I have no problem with breastfeeding pictures of any child at any age. It’s normal life.

I’ve fed my children with pants on when they’ve not been able to wait,in bed they had full access to me. I’ve fed them almost naked after stripping off cos they’ve puked all over me - a friend taking the clothes to wash and handing me a blanket 😂

She didn’t snap a pic though.

However that’s an ad, that’s been staged. Would she normally feed with nothing on there? The child not consenting to a naked picture is what worries me?

whenwillthemadnessend · 03/04/2021 08:34

They probably Chuck the breast milk and just use copydex. 🤣🤣🤣

Ridiculous idea

And what if it leaks in the post 🤮

Icenii · 03/04/2021 08:35

Why just breastmilk? What about first period jewellery? Passage into women hood.

Hallyup5 · 03/04/2021 08:36

I'm absolutely pro breastfeeding. I've fed my own 5 children and I'm currently trying to stop feeding my very stubborn 2 years old, but these sort of pictures wind me up. I have no problem with pictures of babies feeding normally, but why is it that almost every advertising campaign has the woman there in their knickers?! That's not something I want to see.

Fembot123 · 03/04/2021 08:38

I thought she wasn’t in her knickers 😁

UntamedWisteria · 03/04/2021 08:38

I'd quite like to have my toenail clippings made into some earrings.

TheKeatingFive · 03/04/2021 08:40

You can make jewellery from anything you want. If you fancy setting up a business to do so, crack on.

If there’s a demand for it, you’ll find that out.

Poorlykitten · 03/04/2021 08:41

I imagine period necklaces will be next.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 03/04/2021 08:43

I don’t think this normalises breastfeeding at all. It makes it look a bit like Gwynth Paltrow wank.

In hundreds of years people will look back at this time and ask why people had to be naked to spread awareness for stuff.

The mum’s photoshopped to hit, it’s about how she looks not about breastfeeding.
