Dogs don’t just get born and become evil, they’re made that way just like people

It's not always 'nurture' that's responsible. You do get some people like dogs who are just bad regardless of how they're raised. Though I would agree in most cases how a dog is treated and raised is the answer behind their behaviour.

I’d like to see a blanket ban on ALL bull breeds (yes even staffies snd frenchies) what is the point of keeping a dog with such an oversized jaw and powerful bite that can so easily be crossed with banned breeds like the pitbull

I wouldn't support a ban on staffies. I'd never have one myself (too big and too strong for me), but I love them. I've known many, and every one has been adorable and had lovely temperament. They're really affectionate, imo. I used to visit some clients who had one, he'd sit next to me on the sofa, and gradually insinuate himself under my arm, so I ended up cuddling him without even realising. I think they're lovely dogs, but owners need to recognise that they have strong guarding instinct which needs careful training and management.

This is my girl

She’s a XL bully however some think he’s a pit. Her papers say bully but whatever she is. She is golden.

She gets walked 3 times a day with a German shep and they play constantly

I’m home with her all day everyday and not because of Covid, because my job entails me to work from home.

I’m fully aware she has a prey drive (loves squirrels and rabbits) but of course could never catch one.

I’ve had the same ignorant comments about her in the park about what breed they believe she is. She has no interest in other dogs apart from the ones she usually plays with.

She’s a well exercised, well socialised dog (next doors kids always ask if she can come out to play as we often spend time having a drink or food with neighbours)

Not a soul in this world could tell me my dog is dangerous.

If you want to come for me then go ahead :)

Most people seem to think that they are fantastic, responsible, knowledgeable owners. Their dogs are friendly, sociable, harmless bundles of joy and fun who would never hurt a fly.
It’s always ‘someone else’s dog’.

🤨

CallmeHendricks · 03/04/2021 10:15

@Viviennemary

I wish this fashion for dog keeping would go. Can't stand them.
Fashion? It's hardly a new thing. People have kept dogs for centuries.
GabsAlot · 03/04/2021 10:16

i think the owners should be banned i dont know about the dogs

poor woman

Rosehip10 · 03/04/2021 10:17

was probably a pair of staffies - they should be banned.

STARmyarse · 03/04/2021 10:17

But my dog ...

But my dog ...

But my dog ...

It’s never your dog till it is.

@novaissuper
My pit bull type dog is fully licensed and a therapy dog.Have been around my own children since the day they were born. When they were tiny he did not do anything apart form a sniff, always waiting until they were more active to be around them. They are highly emotionally intelligent.
A while ago it helped some children to overcome extreme fear of dogs to the point of them wanting to visit him/go for a walk at any opportunity(unfortunately lockdown made it impossible). He is also very sensitive to anyone with emotional needs.
The ignorance on MN is absolutely astounding.

Absolutely there should be a yearly spot checks on your house and the owner but even this wouldn’t stop it I don’t think

These dogs that live in the garden and don’t get walked are a recipe for disaster it’s such a shame.

Love this

I'm not sure how much the police can actually do about dangerous dogs, even if there have been previous reports about them. My friend was hospitalised after an attack, and her small puppy severely injured, and the owner of the three attacking dogs was already "known to police."
Nothing of any effect was imposed subsequently.

Totally agree with this. There are so many breeds of dog to choose from why do we need these potentially dangerous ones? If there were no dogs capable of killing humans then no humans would get killed. Even guard dogs arent bulldogs.

@LBXXX
She's beautifull, some people will never understand that it's just a dog.
People don't want to listen, they just judge 'the looks.

CallmeHendricks · 03/04/2021 10:23

"They are highly emotionally intelligent."
"He is also very sensitive to anyone with emotional needs."

May I ask (and this is a genuine question, not being snarky) if that could also indicate their being highly-attuned to people being scared of them? How might that turn out?

Visionoffspring · 03/04/2021 10:23

He has never bitten anyone. I gave too little information: he lunged when the people crossed the road and came straight towards me. He was on a lead, I pulled him in and away and apologised.

What I don’t get is if it’s fine for you to walk round with your guard dog why is it illegal for me to carry pepper spray or a knife. I’d never hurt anyone intentionally, I’d sure as hell have more control over it than all your dogs. Sure there’s idiots with knives but we have idiots with dogs so???

NRCS · 03/04/2021 10:23

I don't need help. noone should have a pet that's capable of killing an adult woman never mind a child.

Visionoffspring · 03/04/2021 10:24

I don’t think the dog owners mocking others about ignorance are helping themselves really.

When I walk her in the park by me some people will give very strange looks at me and make comments

But when I walk her in a park in a more affluent area (nicer dog walking park) the people love her which really surprised me!

But yes the ignorance of people on here is amazing. And to be honest I was the same before I owned one myself so I just put it down to that.

I know what she is and I know her temperament and that’s enough for me. Regular walkers on the park also know her and she’s changed a lot of perceptions but the MN gang won’t be as accepting 😂

ArabellaScott · 03/04/2021 10:25

Dog wardens should probably be far more active. They've just axed our local one, so now I don't know who there even is to deal with difficult or dangerous dogs - police I suppose.

I’m doing just fine

I have an opinion and il voice it thanks

reprehensibleme · 03/04/2021 10:26

There need to be far stricter regulations on dog ownership, mandatory licensing with licences costing at least £200 per year because if you can't afford that you can't afford a dog.

Lockdown has highlighted issues with unscrupulous breeders and stupid people buying dogs with no idea of the effort and cost involved in caring for them properly.

All dogs should be neutered before sale/adoption and there should be really harsh penalties for scum who ill treat animals.

The number of husky type dogs which ended up in local shelters after people bought them because of GOT then discarded them three months later because they 'didn't realise' these dogs eat huge amounts and need vast amounts exercise and training was heartbreaking.

Sometimes I hate people.

I have one of THE most people-orientated, friendly balls of fluff in my dog. He loves everyone and everyone loves him. He's never "guarded" food or possessions. Gently takes treats from your fingers without any contact at all.

Would I leave him unattended around a small child?
Never. He's a dog and who knows what might trigger something in his psyche.
