To feel extremely depressed about how Brexit is limiting the lives we once knew.

Presumably now, if you want to go shopping in Paris on the Eurostar, you will have to declare, queue and pay customs on any clothes / goods over a given amount at the border. How crap and inconvenient is that?

Same with any holiday purchases from anywhere in the EU? Not worth it.

Also if you order anything online that happens to come from the EU and costs over over £135, you get hit with massive customs charges of about 40%. Companies like Etsy etc are taking a massive hit as a result.

How is this “taking back control?” Its so depressing and backward. The only reason nobody is kicking off about this yet is because nobody could go anywhere anyway. People don’t realise the freedoms they had and that are now gone. What a shit and insular place to live this will be.

And I don’t wait to hear any predictable ‘vaccine nationalism’ waffle either (because that has nothing whatsoever to do with what I’m asking in this instance and we could have done exactly the same within the EU anyway).

@shinynewapple21

Given the massive limiting on all of our lives by Covid, lockdown and the fall out of that I think most people don't have the energy to worry about any additional impact caused by Brexit
Really? Many see it for exactly what it is, a double whammy.

And a smoke screen for the economic harm and lack of future investment.

Why should the government get away with the harm Brexit has done because there has been a pandemic?

the80sweregreat · 02/04/2021 20:03

Boris was in a red bus the other day looking a bit puzzled. Yesterday he was in a rather dashing b and q bomber jacket. He is lining up a new job as we speak. Won't get long.

the80sweregreat · 02/04/2021 20:03

Won't be long till he is gone I mean !

Persiantrio · 02/04/2021 20:04

Even BJs father is emigrating to France. DS and I heard him in a queue on Portobello Road telling interested passers by.

QueenZoopla · 02/04/2021 20:06

100% with you, OP. COVID has hidden a lot of the effects because we can't go anywhere and most of us aren't living our normal lives. When it's gone it will be all the more stark. Just too depressing.

jasjas1973 · 02/04/2021 20:07

What do you think is a lie. How would you know Brits couldn’t pick crops if you piss a load of people off before they have even tried

We tried it, so did other growers, british people don't want to do back breaking work, living in a caravan, travelling from farm to farm.... on the other hand, an EU worker can earn considerable money (comparative to his/her own country) so its worth doing.

Thats not to say no one does, but not enough to make it a viable option.

Persiantrio · 02/04/2021 20:13

jas - fear not. It has been revealed to us on this thread that pre- 2004, “the SAHMs” used to pick the fruit and veg for their pin money for “luxuries.” We’ll survive this Brexit yet!

We were told that they would retain Erasmus by Boris Johnson

That was before the EU insisted that the UK continue to be one of the biggest funders of the scheme (based on our GDP) - despite us having left the EU. Details of the new Turing scheme are here;

The Government must put people's lives before politics and join the EU's vaccine scheme. It would be absolutely unforgivable if Number 10's preoccupation with Brexit meant the NHS missed out on the benefits of this initiative, include securing bulk supplies at a lower price.

Plans for a major new film studio complex in east London have been given a further boost after the scheme’s Hollywood backer announced it was pumping a further £50m into the project.

Hackman Capital Partners (HCP), which owns studios where classics such as Citizen Kane and Gone With the Wind were filmed, last year took control of construction of Eastbrook Studios, a new film and TV hub set to open in Dagenham. ...

Meanwhile plans have been outlined for the UK’s largest purpose-built studio complex near Reading, while Sky is set to open a new 32-acre production hub in Elstree.

Los Angeles-based HCP, which was founded in 1986, owns a string of major US film studios, including The Culver Studios, Television City Studios and Silvercup Studios.

Its sound stages have played host to numerous blockbusters over the years, as well as CBS TV hits including The Late Late Show with James Corden.

I bet Boris and Carrie will end up in the US in
a few years time. Probably do an interview with Oprah and tell ' their truth' whilst the Uk burns.

LadyWithLapdog · 02/04/2021 20:22

I’m sorry but the Turing scheme is just a kafkaesque moebius loop. You get passed on from link to link to link to fucking nothing.

Yes. Like father Stanley and France.
jasjas1973 · 02/04/2021 20:28

Does Turing offer the same funding, study & collaborative opportunities that Erasmus did?

Seems thats a big NO!

Persiantrio · 02/04/2021 20:28

I know, we could never have dreamed of film studios while in the EU.

I’m intermittently off MN. But clavinova reminds me of a poster (never good at names, stag with nails?) who’s flood a thread with links and long, long posts, it would become so tedious that people just gave up when she turned up. With apologies to clavinova for the similitude if that’s not her MO.

Who knows Clav, CV has totally distorted the effects of Brexit, if Bojo didn't invent CV, i bet he is bloody glad it came along.

NI/GB lorries are now taking on average 4.5 hours longer per trip now compared to pre brexit.

And why on earth should we not contribute based upon GDP? More British exceptionalism right there!

What has the Vaccine to do with opportunities to learn a foreign language? With such a high GDP both must be possible (not to mention all of the waste on Covid Contracts for Cronies!)

On Media, how does contracts with the US assist the violinist who wishes to play with an orchestra in Vienna?

Stop changing the subject!!!!

Well it's utterly fucked our business, 1/3 of our work is in the EU and we're considering getting rid of some employees and replacing them with people who have an EU passport so they can actually work there, otherwise we're screwed

mustlovegin · 02/04/2021 20:36

Exactly. Thankfully the intelligent and resourceful ones are going to find a way to make it work. The rest will likely continue to focus on negativity and damning our country - to what end? who knows?

IpanemaNova · 02/04/2021 20:38

Not keen on Stanley but he did at least vote remain.

lifeturnsonadime · 02/04/2021 20:39

Brexit has damaged our country, 40 pages and no benefits. Again.
