Live in a beautiful seaside town in the SW.

Yesterday, in the 5 minutes of getting out of my car I saw the second home owners from Oxford in their holiday home opposite our house had arrived and a whole family get out of their car with their suitcases arrive at their gran's house two doors down.

Just...bloody...WAIT!!!

I don’t understand, here in Australia we are hearing about how the UK should be getting a third wave sometime soon, why are people travelling?

Because Britain has always believed they are exceptional and despite seeing with our own eyes what is happening in other countries, we find ways to believe that isn’t going to happen here.

When it first came to Italy, we watched and said we won’t have that problem. Italy are older, poorer, worse healthcare, live differently. Won’t happen here.

With the second wave we said we won’t have that problem. Spain in yer every Tom, Dick and Harry in, they didn’t do proper testing, they are letting people gather on the beaches, they opened everything too quickly, how silly they are.

Now with the third wave we’re saying we won’t have that problem, look how terribly they have done with the vaccine, ours was up and running so much faster and we’ve done it so much better.

It is, of course, possible that the fact we have more people vaccinated our death rate will be lower in a third wave, that transmission might be lower. But rather than being cautious and moving slowly, Britain has said “fuck it, we’re exceptional, I’m pissed off with lockdown, I’m not following any rules any more. The third wave will come.

DdraigGoch · 27/03/2021 11:25

@Archersandlemonade

The 2nd homers could live there all the time - I don’t know why people moan about them - surely it’s a bonus that they don’t. People say they come and put strains on the local Hospital etc but the local Hospital must be able to cope with all the people otherwise they wouldn’t build so many houses in that town- and if they can’t cope then that’s an issue for the local Cpuncil surely
I must admit that living in close proximity to three second homes and a holiday let has been quite a bonus during lockdown. All three of them have noisy dogs. Not having had to listen to the horrible things for nearly six months has been bliss.
PregnantGotCovid · 27/03/2021 11:25

I agree with you op. Ok it might be a legitimate support bubble. But we can see from pp that too many people have decided the rules no longer apply to them.

I'm continuing to stick to the rules. I'm 37 weeks pregnant. Dd hasn't seen her grandparents since Aug. They live a few hours drive away. Easter would be the perfect time to visit them. They have room for us to stay. We've all had covid. They've had the first vaccine. But I'll be continuing to follow the rules as I don't want to be part of the problem. We don't know enough about the mutations or the vaccines to be sure it would be safe to visit.

Perhaps one of the pps who thinks the rules don't apply to them was one of the people who infected me in January. I caught it despite carefully following the rules. My DH is still not fully recovered more than 2 months later despite being totally healthy. It infuriates me how self centred so many people are.

Viciouslybashed · 27/03/2021 11:25

I agree with you OP mumsnet but is full of angry people that rage at everything covid. People need to just stop thinking rules don't apply to them.

DropDTuning · 27/03/2021 11:26

@friendlycat

I’m with you OP. I wish everyone would just follow the rules. But no they are fed up and don’t care anymore. Good job that lots of other decent citizens balance it out by following what we are being asked to do.

Like shopping on our own, not taking children unnecessarily- that sort of thing?

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 27/03/2021 11:26

I do think that the third wave that Europe is having now is the same as the wave the UK had in January, driven by the Kent variant and in our case following extremely hard on the heels of the second wave.

That doesn’t mean that we might not have a fourth of course.

Where did you read that little gem?

We’ve got a great vaccination program here. We have waves 2+3 in December-January.

Things are on the up here. How’s the vaccination program going in Australia....?

GoLightlyontheEarth · 27/03/2021 11:37

FFS. We have the chanters telling us, 'You should never go abroad. Fuck you, you go to Norfolk!' Then the people hating on tourists and second home owners here.

Good on them.

This shit has gone on long enough.

Emilyontmoor · 27/03/2021 11:41

How’s there going to be a third wave with more than half the adult population vaccinated? And if there were why would it matter if it was a wave of mild/asymptotic cases?

The virus is mutating. Why do you think the government is so alarmed when the South African variant crops up, but, yet again, not alarmed enough to tighten the borders as the scientists are saying they should to prevent a third wave of a vaccine resistant strain. They are already planning booster vaccinations against known vaccine reliant strains for the vulnerable in the Autumn. The scientific consensus is that there will be more mutant strains and if we don’t get case rates right down to stop one arising here and tighten borders to keep any from overseas out we will have another wave.

In Manaus 60% of the population had had Covid and had antibodies and the new strain has ravaged their community again.

Have you not learnt from the last year that the government consistently underestimate the threat the scientists are alerting them to and act too little and too late to prevent deaths and damage to the economy. They have also lost the trust of people in their rules as is so evident here....

Lancrelady80 · 27/03/2021 11:41

Where has the idea that it's only a couple of days early come from? The screenshot earlier said "loophole" not that it's allowed yet.

Loophole = not actually allowed but there's a bit of wiggle room that people will use to drive a sodding great jeep through.

Support bubbles are fine, otherwise we should all be staying put. We live 5 miles from a beach and haven't been able to go since it's not local enough for police guidelines, which say stay in your own village/town. So not much sympathy for people saying they miss the beach and want some fresh air. Go to the local park or walk the local streets like everyone else who has been putting up and staying home to keep to the law and try to limit Covid infections rising again. Not all have been vaccinated, not even all vulnerable have been done despite what media say, and we'll end with another wave of our own making because of selfish sods who can't hold on a couple of months. Like many others who work term time, this is the third holiday we're missing out on. It's crap. But we're not going to break the law just to go ahead regardless.

Pp said earlier about "the hospital and infrastructure can take it, else they wouldn't keep building." Well, our local hospital (45 mins away) was built to last 30 years and has now done 45. The roof is literally being held on with rope and poles in some places. Capacity is small and has not increased despite numbers living in the area having tripled in the time it was built. It is an ongoing source of frustration. Gp surgeries are maxed out. Developers come and build estates but keep them just under the level where they need to give a contribution to supporting expansion of the services needed. Council just sees £ signs. At least three developments have been given the go ahead despite initially being turned down by local councils over these issues - they appeal and get to go ahead anyway. The people at the top are either corrupt or just don't give a damn.

LMAO at trying to look down on Australia when it comes to Covid!!

Incidentally, the UK government is prepping for wave three from September so let's not get too smug too soon.

Emilyontmoor · 27/03/2021 11:46

Dobby I saw another twit make a similar comment on an Australian friends Facebook page. “I hope your government don’t get complacent”

I think complacent is 120k deaths and rising, not keeping cases down to 30k and 900 deaths in total. Yesterday they had 12 new cases though for months they have had runs of “doughnut” days ie no cases, non. Their quarantine arrangements are infinitely more effective at keeping cases, and new variants out.

So vaccination isn’t exactly urgently needed, is it?

lightand · 27/03/2021 11:50

@Haydugee

MN at its craziest.

The same people who are cheering on the rule breakers will no doubt be complaining the loudest if there’s a 3rd wave.

YANBU.

Quite.Funny how some threads go isn't it? This thread seems choc a bloc with inaccuracies.

I dont know all the rules, but I wouldnt be posting wrong ones on a thread, without having double checked first.

cryh and mintymabel Totally agree it is embarrassing. I actually saw out SARS in Hong Kong and I said at the time, it would have been so much worse if it had happened here. I really did not want to be proven right.

As is your pointless remark on how deluded people are. So bloody irritating.

MiddlesexGirl · 27/03/2021 11:56

@BoredOfCbeebies

No idea why you're getting a hard time on here OP. None of us like the rules or want to stick to them, but I thought most of us were following them for the greater good. I wish I had the confidence of other posters that we're not going to see a third wave. Hopefully the vaccine rollout will prevent or dampen it, but we don't know yet. I feel like I'm in a parallel universe. All these people saying that Europe haven't been in lockdown since Christmas? 🤷‍♀️ They have been in lockdown, just like us, they're just behind with vaccinations. Someone even suggested we won't get a third wave because we're not in the EU anymore?!
I agree. Just follow the rules for a few more weeks. Let those in charge look at the data and the trends and make sure that our roadmap out is proceeding in a safe way. Don't be selfish and think 'well we are fine because we're vaccinated' or 'we are fine because we're not doing anything different to what we would be at home' etc etc. Just follow the rules like everyone else.
