To want to know, what is the new 'grey'?

Inspired shamelessly by a thread I just read BUT if painting whole houses grey (I am almost guilty of doing planning this) will soon be out of fashion, much as white and before that, magnolia - what do you think the new grey will be?!

I have over half a house left to paint but zero artistic flare! If I'm left to my own devices it will all go grey as I like my calm grey kitchen and living room. Now I think I may need saving from myself!

Help Mumsnet?!

@MrsPernicious

Pantone says grey and yellow, yawn so 1987ish
Well to be fair with the hazard tape everywhere - I've been known to joke that yellow and black were the colours of the year.
NCkitchen · 26/03/2021 20:45

Ooooh I've been in to teal for YEARS, and just getting rid of it now.

Going for dark green, and sagey green now

but no idea if they are "on trend"

DuchessOfSausage · 26/03/2021 20:46

Peach and magnolia

TheCrowening · 26/03/2021 20:49

I’d just paint it whatever colour you like if you’re living in it, rather than preparing it to sell.

I have a house full of dark and bold colours (variously brown, green, purple, teal) and all sorts of weird shit. Couldn’t care less if it’s Insta-worthy.

TheCrowening · 26/03/2021 20:51

@GiveMyHeadPeaceffs

I think green preferably beautiful emerald green will be the next grey. I'm planning on at least two feature walls that colour anyway Grin
Well apparently I’m on trend then albeit accidentally, as I think my favourite room in my house is painted in Glasshouse by Graham & Brown.

I’d be very surprised if brown came back in again any time soon.

LolaButt · 26/03/2021 20:53

I’m not going back to brown. No way.

category12 · 26/03/2021 20:54

A colour you like? If you like grey, do it grey, if you like sparkly add glitter, if you like pink do it pink. it's you that has to live with it, do something you like, not what's in fashion. If your taste is so appalling your house would never sell with decor of your own choice, slap on white before trying to sell if it you ever do.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 26/03/2021 20:54

Surely no one would paint their home a colour they don’t like, just because it’s fashionable?

Atalantea · 26/03/2021 20:54

why do you care what is in fashion? why dont you paint your house in a colour you actually like??

EmotionallyEncumbered · 26/03/2021 20:56

I recently painted my kitchen pink with green cabinets thinking it was quite original, seeing it everywhere now! I used this pic to choose colours:

Well presumably not actually dislike, but she says she likes grey, but is put off by other people saying it's going out of fashion. I say just do it in grey if that's what she likes.
ThatPoster · 26/03/2021 20:57

Oh god, I hope not brown.

I would say Hague Blue.

Lanique · 26/03/2021 20:59

Ha!

Just came on to say pink and green @EmotionallyEncumbered

Kitchen cabinets and reception room walls painted in Hague Blue. With copper touches.

TableNiner · 26/03/2021 21:00

Light pink

It was white everything with an airy farmhouse feel, then grey everything with mirrored furniture and crushed velvet, now it seems to have moved into jewel colours like teal/mustard/claret with rattan and industrial style furniture.

I think the next trend will be 80s - brown, yellow, floral curtains, cord furniture etc. And I am not looking forward to it.

BitOfFun · 26/03/2021 21:05

I think that gorgeous wallpaper should be the Next Big Thing.

Roszie · 26/03/2021 21:06

Definitely blue kitchens.

MinnieMous3 · 26/03/2021 21:06

*70s

No - that's the 70's. The 80's was all pale pink and dove grey, Lladro ornaments and Eternal Beau crockery.

I reckon it will be back to magnolia again. With a dash of sage.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 26/03/2021 21:11

@SmokedDuck

I'm seeing two directions. One the saturated darker colours like navy and teal. The other warmer things like beige and brown. I've seen some re-releases of old 70's flooring patters for example.

Both IMO are a reaction to so much cold grey. People start to want something different when a trend has been so all encompassing.

I think the best idea is to generally go with what you like and what works in your house. You really can't go wrong looking at the age of your house for inspiration, you don't need to recreate an era, but often the trends of the era will look good in the homes of the same era. And being 100% on trend isn't helpful when it looks weird in your house.

Oh.

My house was built in 1974.

Sad

Yeah I corrected myself - my sausage fingers on the keyboard!

Mine was built in the uninspiring 1995, I’m not even sure it had a trend! Terracotta?
