To want to know, what is the new 'grey'?

Inspired shamelessly by a thread I just read BUT if painting whole houses grey (I am almost guilty of doing planning this) will soon be out of fashion, much as white and before that, magnolia - what do you think the new grey will be?!

I have over half a house left to paint but zero artistic flare! If I'm left to my own devices it will all go grey as I like my calm grey kitchen and living room. Now I think I may need saving from myself!

Help Mumsnet?!

@AnnaSW1

Horrible red kitchens
Laughing at this. I inherited a shiny, red kitchen in 2003 and loved it! It had been imported from Italy and.we'd never seen the like! It was an older Italian couple, so bidets and tiles everywhere with 3D fruit, but I adored that kitchen with my scrubbed table in the middle. It brings lovely memories of sun beating in and friends all round that table all the time. Homes are about a feeling and memories.

OP my best friend has just finished her lounge in black and cream. It's very classy. Far too classy for me, but you might fancy it.

@Northernsoullover

I know I'm going to be a misery for saying this but please can people think twice about changing accessories to fit in with trends? Its so bloody wasteful. My friend has just redecorated. All the duck egg tat is going to charity (or the incinerator because the shops aren't open) but if its not on trend who will buy it? You can buy accessories that will match any colour scheme and keep them for much longer.
Good point - hopefully someone will use it

Peach 🍑

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 26/03/2021 20:21

I’ve never bought accessories to ‘match’ a room. I have vases and picture frames etc that I move around depending on where I fancy having them. What sort of accessories would you buy in duck egg?!

ShowOfHands · 26/03/2021 20:22

It's all going greige, with some blush pink, rose gold and copper stuff as well as geometric and art deco type stuff. I've been really closely following interiors blogs and trends for years as for the first time we are doing up a house for us, not just affording whatever we can.

I go with a print I really like for each room and choose colours from it. I'm using a William Morris print to style my snug at the moment and it's so hard to find anything that isn't a deliberately quirky squirrel lamp in tarnished gold or a novelty pineapple ornament. It's all so earnest.

Pantone says grey and yellow, yawn so 1987ish

Onedropbeat · 26/03/2021 20:23

Navy is the old new grey

The new new grey is forest green

colouringindoors · 26/03/2021 20:24

White.

Or a colour you love.

Or both Grin

ShowOfHands · 26/03/2021 20:24

I also have furniture I love that has been passed down from family and various trinkets and novelties which have huge sentimental value so I also go for stuff which matches the stuff that holds happy memories. It makes things slightly eclectic but hopefully, interesting.

ForeverAintEnough12 · 26/03/2021 20:26

@NurseButtercup thank you for those links!!! I didn’t even know that brands picked a colour of the year!

I wonder what people would think of my house! Maybe that I’m a trend hoarder as I seem to randomly have everything people have discussed here.

  • light grey hall and front sitting room , x2 grey bedrooms
  • white bathrooms x2, white sunroom and white office
  • kitchen in that Dulux colour of the year brown/beige
  • bedroom in navy
  • bedroom in teal

However all have been those colours for 3 years now. The grey is with green in one bedroom, blue in the other and yellow in the sitting room.

MrsPernicious · 26/03/2021 20:28

Some of the other other Pantone colours are nicer

I don't even look, what's 'on trend'. I find a colour I like and use it. A the moment it's creams/greens/yellows. But I love my grey kitchen with white walls, so clean and fresh.

ForeverAintEnough12 · 26/03/2021 20:30

@Northernsoullover this is a good point. I’ve done this with all my furniture which is all neutral colours as I was thinking I could just repaint the walls without needing to buy nee furniture but I am guilty of buying accessories in a particular colour (cushions/vase) with a view that I could replace them if I get fed up with them.

The right way to do it is probably neutral accessories and furniture and have your colour choice reflected in paint.

But then painting is more effort than buying new cushions and getting rid of the old!

I have cushions and blankets. Some of my crockery. I still quite like it anyway
Nitgel · 26/03/2021 20:33

I've painted a wall in brave ground dulux colour of the year Grin

Nitgel · 26/03/2021 20:33

Its nice

Nitgel · 26/03/2021 20:34

I've also painted a wall in gold from wilkes. It's actually pretty lush.

Overthinking1 · 26/03/2021 20:34

Navy is on the way out as its been in for a few years now. Green comes next

notanothertakeaway · 26/03/2021 20:35

Dulux Brilliant White is the best. Clean, fresh and bright

From time to time, we open a tub & touch up marks all over the house

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 26/03/2021 20:36

I think green preferably beautiful emerald green will be the next grey. I'm planning on at least two feature walls that colour anyway Grin

Doilooklikeatourist · 26/03/2021 20:37

I’m staying with white

ForeverAintEnough12 · 26/03/2021 20:38

@Overthinking1 I just googled interior design trends for 2022 and you are correct it’s all greens!

I wonder if the trend for open plan will also go out of fashion now with more people working from home and just appreciating space and privacy after lockdown. I’ve never been a big fan of them anyway as I always wonder what you do if say children’s friends are over and you want to relax after work! We might see people reinstating walls and partitions!

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 26/03/2021 20:39

I really wouldn’t like a house painted all in white. I can see that it looks good in other peoples houses, it’s just not me. People should just decorate in ways they like... they’re the ones who have to live there! Genuinely who cares if it’s ‘in’ or not?
When we bought this house the sellers had had the whole place painted in magnolia to sell. I couldn’t wait to get some colour in (I painted 2 rooms in the first weekend!).

SmokedDuck · 26/03/2021 20:40

I'm seeing two directions. One the saturated darker colours like navy and teal. The other warmer things like beige and brown. I've seen some re-releases of old 70's flooring patters for example.

Both IMO are a reaction to so much cold grey. People start to want something different when a trend has been so all encompassing.

I think the best idea is to generally go with what you like and what works in your house. You really can't go wrong looking at the age of your house for inspiration, you don't need to recreate an era, but often the trends of the era will look good in the homes of the same era. And being 100% on trend isn't helpful when it looks weird in your house.
