To want to know, what is the new 'grey'?

Inspired shamelessly by a thread I just read BUT if painting whole houses grey (I am almost guilty of doing planning this) will soon be out of fashion, much as white and before that, magnolia - what do you think the new grey will be?!

I have over half a house left to paint but zero artistic flare! If I'm left to my own devices it will all go grey as I like my calm grey kitchen and living room. Now I think I may need saving from myself!

Help Mumsnet?!

Navy and plaster pink.
Pick a colour you like op and go with that.

covetingthepreciousthings · 28/03/2021 09:46

I think Navy has been the next grey, but even that is starting to date now I think as everyone seems to have dark navy living rooms.

Panelling seems to be the new thing, which looks nice in old period type properties, but looks a bit iffy in a 1960s or new build semi..

I think just pick what colours you like, you're the one who has to live with it after all!

We have white everywhere, as I'm too indecisive to choose colours as I know I'll be fed up with it in a week or two.

I’m redecorating my bedroom

I have navy velvet curtains on one window and a navy/white ticking Roman blind in the other window.
Then behind the bed will the this wall paper with these wall sconce lights. The rest of the room with be a chalky white. Probably “all white” by farrow and ball which I love. Then in the dressing room which comes off the bedroom I might pant pale pink probs “Middleton pink” by farrow and ball.

Carpet is natural jute and I have white bedding. Ah little grey armchair. White metal side tables by the bed.
I’ll get a Sputnik pendant for the ceiling light. I have afew plants in the room already.

This is all from just seeing a wall paper I love.

I must admit I like the warmer greys and our bathroom done in 2018 has these tiles

I don't think I would do my living room in these colours but don't mind them tbh

Everything dates

Like your sconce light btw

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 28/03/2021 14:03

It's your home, you paint it whatever colour you like and don't worry about the current fashion.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/03/2021 16:18

I think that was unkind and unnecessary Woodhill.

Bythemillpond · 28/03/2021 16:21

Paint and decorate with whatever makes you happy

All the latest colour trends are just a way of companies getting people to part with their money

What was? Confused
TheOneWithTheBigNose · 28/03/2021 17:12

I think @woodhill was saying she likes the sconce light, wasn’t she?

woodhill · 28/03/2021 17:39

@JaninaDuszejko Confused

I loved the light hence my comment - what did you think I meant?

woodhill · 28/03/2021 17:40

I meant doing my own living room in grey😀

Oh, right, sorry. I read it as a bitchy comment that her sconce light was dated. No punctuation so I read it more like this:

Everything dates... like your sconce light btw.

Atalune · 28/03/2021 18:00

Thanks woodhill alGrin. I don’t have a single problem with anyone liking or not my taste.

op has anyone inspired you to choose a colour way?

Atalune · 28/03/2021 18:03

I’ve just read your comments back woodhil! I can see them both ways Grin

I love the wallpaper I ordered a sample from John Lewis a couple of weeks ago in a lighter colour.

@JaninaDuszejko

Yes, I meant my own homeSmile

I usually space out my comments.

woodhill · 28/03/2021 19:15

I think it's my thought process🙂

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/03/2021 19:25

Pantone’s colour of the year is a grey.

Pantone advise and make predictions for interiors/textiles/fashion for next year, or further ahead than that.

If they are saying grey is colour if the year this year, it still has some way to go until it dies.

@Atalune, I love those leopards!

@CuddlyDudley Thank you so much for the picture, great wall paper!

Sadly I think wall paper is a no go in our house but I started thinking a silver/grey paint on one wall and white on the others with a colour on the blinds maybe (although I do like the silver blind idea too).

So I may well be back to where I started! Grey-ish lol

@Atalune I'm sort of inspired! I think I just lack imagination! I was interested in what you said about curtains on one window and a blind on the other as that is another dilemma as we have one dorma window and one proper one! I was thinking they both had to be blinds really but I think you just inspired me there! If I can get them to match/tone.

I also realised I should have started a thread asking for pictures of colours people love as I find seeing your and @CuddlyDudley 's pictures so much easier to imagine!

Thank you so much everyone for all the thoughts and suggestions.

Now I need to identify a non cream but also not brilliant white, white! Any suggestions anyone please before I add to my many testers with lots of whites?!

All the window coverings in our hallway are different (3 window blinds and a door curtain). I had a look round the web and all the advice was 'make your window treatments and fabric all identical in a room. If you can't do that mix the treatments but not the fabrics or mix the fabrics but have the same treatment. Definitely don't have different treatments and different fabrics'. So obviously I have a mix of curtains and blinds with different patterns and different kinds of fabrics. There's a theme to the colours but that's it. I think it works!
