To want to know, what is the new 'grey'?

Inspired shamelessly by a thread I just read BUT if painting whole houses grey (I am almost guilty of doing planning this) will soon be out of fashion, much as white and before that, magnolia - what do you think the new grey will be?!

I have over half a house left to paint but zero artistic flare! If I'm left to my own devices it will all go grey as I like my calm grey kitchen and living room. Now I think I may need saving from myself!

Help Mumsnet?!

A bluey grey teal colour - Benjamin Moore's colour of the year is Aegean Teal which when we bought it turned out to be much more bluey grey than expected. Looks beautiful though.

whenwillthemadnessend · 26/03/2021 18:07

I'd say navy

I have a lot of teal too and love it.

Definitely mustard for accessories

Roussette · 26/03/2021 18:07

Just please don't let it go back to 'peach'.

In the 80s/early 90s, peach was the thing and stencilling too. I got really good at it.

Then it went out of fashion 😁

Lavanderrose · 26/03/2021 18:08

I think grey can look very sophisticated but the lighter grey tones especially are very cold and can feel quite depressing....

RincewindsHat · 26/03/2021 18:09

Just pick a colour you love and enjoy looking at every day. I painted my entire house pink because I love pink and I am happy seeing my pink walls every day. I'll probably paint the next one pink, too.

If grey is your pink and it feels calming to you, use grey in your home - nobody on this forum is ever going to live in your house so their opinions on grey matter not at all.

Not to mention rag rolling!

Navy is the new gray. I like it! I've had a navy bathroom for a couple of years now.

But then every single interior choice is "dated" or "will date very quickly" on Mumsnet. I honestly think i would be scared to brandish a paintbrush if i listened to people's opinion on here.

Personally i'm all for a bit of emerald.

Aria20 · 26/03/2021 18:14

It's blush pink now - looks like fresh plaster. I think navy and teal, sage and mustard have already passed along.

HomeEdRocks18 · 26/03/2021 18:15

No idea, but I think if you paint the colours that you really love then you can't be wrong!
My house has white walls with an accent wall of a different bold colour- living room is bottle green, dining room is mustard, toilet will be bright pink, kitchen will be blue, will probably keep the hallway in white as it's quite dark once all the doors are closed.

Roussette · 26/03/2021 18:19

Not to mention rag rolling!

Oh heck, yes! Forgot that! It was a weird thing to do, but as I'd stencilled the whole house back then, there was nowhere to rag roll!

I love the colour teal but have no walls painted that colour. I am grey, or beige and very boring.

ShadowKitty · 26/03/2021 18:19

I'm so out of date I think I'm back in fashion again! Got natural coloured carpets/ wood look floors and bits of wicker/ sea grass and most of it is about 15 years old - walls white but having looked at stuff online I think I'll be bang on trend shortly! Now where did I put all my brown furniture and dried stick arrangements - haven't seen them since 2005 but they'll be around here somewhere...

hennybeans · 26/03/2021 18:20

Grey is very dated now. But actually navy, teal, all those dark colours are on their last leg too. I've just painted over a navy wall last week.

Nobody else has mentioned it, but I think pure brilliant white is the next thing. Bright and opposite of all the darkness. Either accessorised with lots of bright colours in cushions, sofas, pictures.... Or with lots of light wood, natural, calming beiges and muted greens and blues. But plain bright white walls.

Totally agree, as soon as something becomes vaguely popular someone will say it’s dated or whatever. I honestly think some posters do it to make people feel bad about their design choices, I would so love to see how the many interior design experts on mumsnet decorate their homes, strangely they never post a picture of their uber cool ahead of fashion homes whilst dishing out their sage advice, no doubt someone will come along and say Emerald is so 2020 and your home is dreadfully passé 🙄

I did white and painted over it. It felt like a classroom or an office to me. I've gone over it with a blush but i'm still not that sure tbh!

And sponging, stippling, marbling and woodgraining! I revered Jocasta Innes.
ForeverInADay · 26/03/2021 18:36

Oh thanks so much for all the replies. There is no hope for me!

I have a cupboard full of tester pots Blush

When we did the grey kitchen last year we initially had the painter do one teal wall to go with the others very pale grey. I spent 100s of hours picking that teal and I had to agree with the builder, painter and my DH, it looked hideous. We paid them to go back over it with more light grey!

I would love to be adventurous, not necessarily to be trendy, just to pick something and love it but I don't think any arty flare is in me!

We settled on the hall and our bedroom also going light grey but as we haven't started I'm now thinking I would love to love something more interesting!

I think it’s an almost black believe it or not!

Backtoschool101 · 26/03/2021 18:52

I plan a navy feature wall for my bedroom then rose gold accessories. Like a geometric styled side table with a rose gold frame and a velvet pink foot stool etc

alloverthecarpetagain · 26/03/2021 18:56

@Einszwei

The best thing is to try and choose colours you like and ignore any trends. If it coincides with a 'trend' then so be it. Find a print or a cushion/textile you like and pick out colours to use on walls.
Totally agree with this!
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/03/2021 18:58

@Merryoldgoat

Oh bollocks - I’ve had teal long before it was fashionable and now it will look like all the other houses.

Same! That's really annoying!

TheWernethWife · 26/03/2021 19:11

While on holiday in Northumberland last September we popped into The Beadnell Towers Hotel, Beadnell for breakfast on a couple of mornings.

Dining room is done out in F & B Stiffkey Blue with mustard accessories, looked fabulous.

MummyJ12 · 26/03/2021 19:16

Oh no! Please don’t tell me that grey is dated. My house is all grey/greige tones.....
Totally agree Roussette, at least I didn’t opt for peach! Or terracotta!

I’m living by this statement I suppose. I think my home is stylish, I love it, I don’t really care about trends. (As much as I wish I could be braver with my colour choices, and I like teal and navy, I know I wouldn’t like to live with these colours on my walls or interiors.)

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 26/03/2021 19:18

Nothing in decorating stays unique and different for very long, unlike years ago everything is so accessible and available quickly and at relatively affordable prices, something high end and different featured in Homes and Garden or wherever will soon be copied throughout the country and be available for everyone to purchase, it’s hard to be ahead of the game for very long.

Sounds lovely. It's all a racket to make us constant consumers
