To want to know, what is the new 'grey'?

Inspired shamelessly by a thread I just read BUT if painting whole houses grey (I am almost guilty of doing planning this) will soon be out of fashion, much as white and before that, magnolia - what do you think the new grey will be?!

I have over half a house left to paint but zero artistic flare! If I'm left to my own devices it will all go grey as I like my calm grey kitchen and living room. Now I think I may need saving from myself!

Help Mumsnet?!

  • This. Don't get why people follow trends when they most likely don't like the colour, they just want to be 'in'. My living room is red, who gives a fuck? Oh that's right, no one except me. hmm

The houses on rightmove etc that are all grey just look so boring and it's so repetitive. All the houses look identical, no individuality.*

I don’t really think anyone is choosing decorating trends they dislike just because they are in. There are many trends at any one time, something to suit everyone, right now three major ones are: Grand Millennial - modern grandeur, saturated colours, opulent decor, CottageCore - super cosy, textured, warm, and Japandi - earth tones, minimalist, natural materials. Trends are featured heavily on TV, film, magazines, newspapers, shops... we are surrounded by things which subconsciously and consciously influence us. If you see something in a magazine you really like you might be tempted to follow a similar colour scheme, it’s in the magazine because it’s trendy, but it goes into people’s homes because they love it.

A lot of boring decorating on rightmove will be because when people decorated they knew they would sell before too long and don’t want to put off potential buyers with a polarising colour choice. I know I will be selling my flat within the next 5 years, so the decorating choices I made were fairly neutral and inoffensive. I like them and don’t regret them, but had I been in my forever home I would have been a lot more bold.

I struggle to see properly in navy rooms. We had a bright pink bathroom in our last house though, and green and turquoise kitchen. Most of the rest was magnolia.
Our current house is entirely a sort of putty colour. Very neutral which is good for selling, but I want a few more colours up soon.

@UnconsideredTrifles

I was looking at paint in Wickes last week - apparently a sort of poo brown is the colour of 2021. Covers a multitude of sins with small children, I suppose...
Don't tell me this! I am spending ££££ ripping out the bathroom (which has a lovely dark beige bath suite) at our new house and with it the poo brown (fully tiled) tiles that is honestly like having a bath or shower in someone's anus. It's hideous!
Ahbahbahbah · 27/03/2021 16:51

Hah I wasn’t suggesting that magnolia was about to be trendy! But personally I love a nice bit of magnolia. It’s warm and bright and easy to touch up any scuffs/marks. Looks good (IMO) with pretty much all furniture and accessories. We’re buying a new house atm - currently it’s done very fashionably, lots of dark navy walls, all of which will be covered in magnolia before we move in :)

@Thewinterofdiscontent step away from the red sofa! Grin

I’m coveting this ‘Groucho’ tan sofa from John Lewis

Beige and neutral tones. These can sometimes be introduced to areas where there is grey to add warmth. Add natural items such as wood and rattan. Go for comfort and lots of texture, plenty of plants raux or real.

godmum56 · 27/03/2021 17:38

I do not care what the new new is what is dated, fashionable, ANYTHING. I choose what I like...my gaff my choices

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 27/03/2021 17:41

Pinkish, plaster shade. I had a leaf through a few home magazines for bathroom inspiration lately and they were full of rooms done in this colour.

Mary46 · 27/03/2021 17:46

Love greens. Beige easy to match up. I did like grey but so much of it around. Blue yellow was big in in decor when these houses buit late 90s!! I love greens

Bml11 · 27/03/2021 17:49

I was pretty much all grey but living room and bedroom got changed to navy, not following a trend I just love navy. Just decorated my hall way mint crisp and it looks fresh as f&£k lol

Suipigz · 27/03/2021 17:50

Green in all it’s glorious variety

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/03/2021 17:52

I have teal, navy and yellow (well ochre). I like it but I actually prefer neutral colours. These hide dirty marks better.

VeganCow · 27/03/2021 18:02

Who cares whats the trend. Paint it a colour you like

VeganCow · 27/03/2021 18:07

@RincewindsHat

Just pick a colour you love and enjoy looking at every day. I painted my entire house pink because I love pink and I am happy seeing my pink walls every day. I'll probably paint the next one pink, too.

If grey is your pink and it feels calming to you, use grey in your home - nobody on this forum is ever going to live in your house so their opinions on grey matter not at all.

Totally agree with you. I don't get the following everyone else like sheep. Have a mind of your own! I remember the trend years ago for feature wall wallpaper with big garish flowers and could not understand everyone doing it. I don't get the big tv on a wall either, most are too high up 😂
Yespresh · 27/03/2021 18:13

Navy & dark green seem to be very popular

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/03/2021 18:16

The 70s brown and orange was unbelievably hideous! I’m old enough to remember and shudder.
But nobody I knew allowed such hideousness in their houses.

IMO the best thing to do with fashions in decor is to ignore them.

I dunno, my dps house new build (70s)had orange in kitchen (not their choice)

Lots of gold draylon seemed to feature. Some hideous floral curtains last seen on the Tales of the unexpected Leg of Lamb episode

CuddlyDudley · 27/03/2021 18:40

Looks like ds5 is the fashionable one of the family 🤣😂 . First time he choose his colours he went for teal and grey 3 years ago, we're redecorating over Easter and he wants navy.
Tbf we don't tend to decorate by fashion, our living room is terracotta and cream with distressed pine furniture 🙈. Our bedroom is silver and white with hints of lilac. I'd love navy blue for the living room but it would make it look tiny

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 27/03/2021 18:46

Always loved New England colours. They never date. My house is mostly done in this palette with lots of natural surfaces to warm it up: exposed brickwork, granite in black and soft pink, wood and stone (kitchen), wicker and seagrass (I have a love of baskets). The place has lots of arches which I've echoed in the shape of the mirrors.

I also like the sound of the Moroccan style accessories and sunshine yellow walls, which wouldn't suit my place but sounds lovely and cosy and welcoming. Different styles work in different homes.

urkidding · 27/03/2021 19:23

Be a rebel!!! Paint it grey!!! You'll be sick of seeing teal, this time next year!!

Happyher · 27/03/2021 19:42

I thought stone was the new grey

JaninaDuszejko · 27/03/2021 19:43

The 70s brown and orange was unbelievably hideous!

And yet my current favourite bathroom image on Instagram is this homage to the 1970s orange bathroom.

@Penguineapig

I fear we're heading towards Barley White on woodchip
😃

How about a warm redddish beige? Farrow and ball has a shade called dimity that is neutral but warm and delicious. F and B paint expensive and crap but you could dulux match it. It’s lovely shade.
