To want to know, what is the new 'grey'?

Inspired shamelessly by a thread I just read BUT if painting whole houses grey (I am almost guilty of doing planning this) will soon be out of fashion, much as white and before that, magnolia - what do you think the new grey will be?!

I have over half a house left to paint but zero artistic flare! If I'm left to my own devices it will all go grey as I like my calm grey kitchen and living room. Now I think I may need saving from myself!

Help Mumsnet?!

Coz mustard has been kicking around for a while and that will REALLY date

winniestone37 · 27/03/2021 20:35

Heavy heritage pink - the dark colours have passed. Buy a few house magazines and see what’s out there. Find out what makes you happy and brings you pleasure. Sod what’s the new thing- you live on your house no one else.

HattieBlue · 27/03/2021 20:43

I've just painted over navy with grey... Does this mean I was ahead of curve and now I'm super dated Grin

Penguineapig · 27/03/2021 20:59

@HattieBlue - only if you rag-rolled.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 27/03/2021 21:18
@Thewinterofdiscontent step away from the red sofa! Grin

I’m coveting this ‘Groucho’ tan sofa from John Lewis
Yes, that’s a nice sofa. Although I was thinking lighter tan. Brown leather is looking distinctly dull.

My boyfriend used to have a red Chesterfield. That was the best sofa ever. It looked cool in every house we lived in from a rented flat to large home.

It's nice knowing I'm a bit trendy, I've been using greens, pinks and yellows for several years. Lots of warm neutrals too. I consider myself fairly lousy at interiors but I'm trying to learn, I ended up finding a selection of cushions I liked and building on the style of the room from there. Furniture is all warm neutrals/old gold kind of colours.
I've seen many beautiful looking navy rooms on Pinterest but personally I couldn't abide looking at blue or grey rooms all day at home. Same goes for teal. Always whites, greens, yellows or pinks for me. I love the pink/green kitchens that are in at the moment. I'm much more into gardens than houses so I guess for me it's about bringing those colours inside. I'm fashionable for five minutes anyway 😆.

alltoomuchrightnow · 27/03/2021 21:22

I can answer this as work in a famous superstore and I'm in soft furnishings
It's certainly not mustard, that's had its moment for a few years now
It's greens, but not vibrant acid ones..
Sludgy muted ones like sage and moss (old moss, not the stuff that's just sprouted!) Olive green too

TankGirl97 · 27/03/2021 21:23

Also, not going to lie, I love apricot and peach colours, so warm and uplifting. I'd be quite happy to see that trend again! Smoky apricot for 2022/3!

AliceMadHatter · 27/03/2021 21:46

Anyone I know who has grey in their house have put it with with more colour so I've never seen an all grey house. I like Navy but have noticed everyone is doing it. I've just done a room with white walls with loads of different bright colours and I love it. I don't follow house fashion though, I just have what I like.

AliceMadHatter · 27/03/2021 22:12

Why would anyone follow fashion for their house? I just buy what I like. I prefer a lot of colours and things that mean something.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 27/03/2021 22:45

I am surprised by the colours that do become fashionable, it must be driven commercially- I mean who really thinks my favourite colour is mustard?! Grey is forgivable as it can be quite pretty. I'm not fond of green, sage or any other type so however much it is in fashion, I don't want it about (except in nice outdoors plants). It's quite hard to choose any old colour when the palate is very limited in most stores. That's why I love the old classic of wood floors and white walls, but as someone else said, my family had that back in the 70's, probably why I love it!

Ohwhataprogramme · 27/03/2021 22:48

HattieBlue

You've met yourself coming back! 😜

LifesLittleDeciders · 27/03/2021 22:54

My grey is slowly turning white. Infact, my once all grey house has now only a grey (ish- it’s actually white and silver now) living room. The bedroom is emerald green and gold, kitchen is terracotta, white and copper(although I’m coming away from copper as it’s also dated) and DD room is... colourful as we’re going rainbow themed at the moment 😁

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 27/03/2021 23:34

I'm interested in how many people think they're not influenced at all by fashion, yet describe very on-trend decor. I do think what we like is very much influenced by what we see, whether we know it or not. It's not for nothing that so many of us (myself included) have navy living rooms, when that would have been practically unheard of 15 years ago when magnolia was all the rage. I wouldn't say I try to follow fashion, but I certainly wouldn't say I'm not influenced by it. I don't think it's possible not to be.

headlock · 28/03/2021 00:09

I've had a White House for the last five years so am about to do up my living room with green walls. I'll be having a mustard chair too!

Mamanyt · 28/03/2021 00:41

Beige? NO NO NO NO NO. I do not care. Look, you do your house in what speaks to your soul. Your house should be your soft spot, a retreat from the world...NOT someplace to impress others with how up-to-date or avant guarde you are. People who live that way always have beautiful houses, but they don't always have lovely homes. Personally, I'd rather die than live with beige again. It was all the rage back in the late 50s, and Mum went nuts. It was like living inside a bowl of oatmeal.

ForeverInADay · 28/03/2021 03:22

Ok so the colour selection saga in our house rumbles on.

I'm accepting I'll never be trendy!

Latest thinking is white on the hall (spare paint readily available for touch ups!).

For the bedroom...who knows!

I know people say to do what I like but I think that's the problem, I know I'm terrible at Imagining what it will look like finished! Once it's done I will absolutely be able to say if I like it or NOT! Bit late then though Smile

I don't know why so many people decided to have all grey colours in their homes. Do they have no individuality at all, and have to follow trends all the time.,and all wait for another colour trend to come along, then another load of homes will all look the same..

I don't think white will go out of fashion, like magnolia did, white can cheer up a small area, in places where it may be a little darkish. in older houses.

ZaraW · 28/03/2021 04:38

Living Etc called Grey a classic paint colour on their Instagram last week ......

ZaraW · 28/03/2021 04:39

Forgot to add but probably not decorating your whole house in it.

headlock · 28/03/2021 08:51

I don't get the all gray decor either. It's so bland. I do like light fresh walls but then colourful accessories.
@Mamanyt I completely agree with you.

CuddlyDudley · 28/03/2021 09:04

Hi, three main walls are white and i found a wall paper which i built the rooms around (attached a pic). Then i added silver curtains, silver and white lamps and lightt shade. All the photo frames are silver or white depending on which wall they are on. I've found new build houses are small so my usual colour schemes of rich purples and reds make it look tiny and dark

To want to know, what is the new 'grey'?
csigeek · 28/03/2021 09:26

Whatever colours you like.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 28/03/2021 09:27

Someone I know has an Instagram account showcasing her house. It’s all grey, white and silver, to the extent that I often can’t tell if her photos have been taken in black and white, or in colour.
It’s really not for me.
