Should add that my first f/t job paid £80per month.
My share of the rent was £60 per month.

MarieDelaere · 29/03/2021 13:13

We had small classes of 42!

Sat in rows of desks, teachers allowed to slap / cane. I'm not sure the 'summer of love' really came to my school.

DeePlume · 29/03/2021 13:15

@LemonadeFromLemons

Dark blue or green painted kitchen cabinets, dark coloured wall paint and velvet furniture.
I'll get my coat
Andrew2020 · 29/03/2021 14:28

@Bythemillpond

I think people compare todays freedoms and normalities and add on the supposed extra bits baby boomers got. What they don’t realise is the perks were a bright light for a very few and the rest of life was a fucking struggle. I left school when there were nearly 4 million unemployed If you went to university to claim your free space you had to be a brain box or an amazing artist 90% of university goers now wouldnt get in. Those bitching about having to pay for uni would probably be out of work or on a government training scheme at 16 or 18

If you got into uni then you would need somewhere to live. Because of rent restrictions there were very few landlords so very few houses available. I know someone who lived for the 3 years he was at uni in a cupboard. With his feet sticking out onto the landing when he slept.
Yes housing was relatively cheap compared to wages (if you had a job) although it didn’t seem so at the time because everything else was so expensive. There were very few rentals and what was available to rent was really horrible. Plus you had to take into consideration that everything else was very expensive.
There was no Primark or internet to order cheap stuff from China
If you were a woman it was given that you were paid less than a man. Very few companies took any notice of the equal pay act.
Some people might have had an ok time if you were in work but for the most part it was grim
The internet makes things so much easier. You have the world at your fingertips. You want to know something then within seconds you can get the answer. Imagine all the things you do on line being taken away. If you want to know when your local Tesco shuts or what is on at the local cinema then it involved looking up numbers in the telephone directory and calling or buying a local newspaper.
Shops shut at 5.30pm. No Sunday trading and no Wednesday afternoons
If you want to swap lives because you think living through the 60s and 70s is so great then be my guest
It was oppressive and boring and have I mentioned really really grim.

Well said.

Those suits for men that reach above the ankles. Spindly trousers on men (on fat legs, look too tight on thin legs they look like grass hoppers). Those awful hipster beards. Ridiculously large cars with only one passenger. Thick black slug eyebrows. Chef programs on tv (god so boring!).

Thismummyruns · 29/03/2021 14:51

2020 panelling 🙈

Wilkolampshade · 29/03/2021 14:54

@Bythemillpond, your post really reminds me yes, it really was f'kin awful, and you're so right about the awful endless crushing Sunday boredom. Nothing open. I was on a Fine Art degree in a large Northern city at the time and we used to leave windows sneakily ajar when we were chucked out on a Friday just so we could 'break in' on a Sunday just to have somewhere to meet up and drink bad Instant coffee. No one had the money for wine or weed, just shitty coffee and prison roll ups. Fun times. 😅

pizzaobsessed · 29/03/2021 14:59

Fake panelling on walls of modern houses, all over Instagram accounts at the moment but I suspect will end up like the grey trend.

Brushing eyebrows up so they look bushy.

Obsession with cleaning products and cleaning in general. It's a bit 1950s IMO.

Onlinedilema · 29/03/2021 14:59

Double barrelled first names. Nouns & verbs used as children’s names.

Onlinedilema · 29/03/2021 15:04

Removing lawns and gardens to replace them with gravel and stones. Looks vile.

Removing lawns and gardens to replace them with gravel and stones. Looks vile

But necessary with parking restrictions

Onlinedilema · 29/03/2021 18:25

Not always for parking. Planet of people remove vast swathes of lawn/greenery and replace it with vast ( key word) amounts of pebbles /shingle etc it looks like a huge graveyard. Never looks nice when all you can see is endless pebble / stones etc.

Onlinedilema · 29/03/2021 18:26

At least put some planters in!!

HeronLanyon · 29/03/2021 18:33

Vast planters with vast trailing tendrils creeping all over the vast shingle/paved vastnesses would be vastly preferable, I agree.

TechnoDino · 29/03/2021 19:20

Gallery walls.
Thise godawful front doors with little square or narrow vertical glass panels that look like office doors.
Wicker & rattan furniture.
Dark woodwork.

Contouring
Co-ords.
White trainers with metallic detailing.
Buffet dresses.
Blouses with big collars.

HeronLanyon · 29/03/2021 20:03

I very nearly bought some white trainers with small metallic detail - I spotted it in time.
Dodged a bullet there I guess - didn’t realise this was a thing !

Juliesipadwillcallyouback · 29/03/2021 20:33

Yes what's so 'embarrassing' about 'white trainers with small metallic detailing'? 😂

NerrSnerr · 29/03/2021 20:56

If you like them then get them. Life is far too short to worry about what's in fashion. Just have you house, your hair, your eyebrows, your jeans and trousers how you like them and don't worry about everyone else, let them worry about their own style choices.
HeronLanyon · 29/03/2021 20:59

nerr fully agree. I didn’t actually like the metal detail. Just hadn’t realised until this thread that it was a thing others were waiting to die down !
Got some I love Grin

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 29/03/2021 21:14

We have gravel at the front of our house.Blush We did it to make the garden lower maintenance. There is a small flower bed as well.

Dailywalk · 29/03/2021 21:28

@MarieDelaere

Kemp Snr and younger Kemp Walsh Snr and younger Walsh Whitehall Snr and younger Whitehall all on the telly, far too much
I realise this was posted days ago but I couldn’t agree more!
FredaFox · 29/03/2021 21:35

I’m Confused with the white trainers with metallic detail, didn’t know this was a trend but sounds ok to me, going off to google them

Bramblebutter · 29/03/2021 22:33

@joystir59

Mustard and grey.
Not being funny, but are you a monster?
RoSEbuds6 · 30/03/2021 08:25

The willy nilly approach to trees and establish shrubs in people’s gardens, most of the garden trees near me have been butchered or just taken down without much thought to the wildlife they support.
