Mine are :-

Kellogg’s Rise and Shine, a very strange powdered juice drink that we had on special occasions’ instead of actual juice.

Vesta ready meals, particularly the Chow Mein which had crispy noodles on top.

Toast Toppers - weird sludge resembling baby food.

@HandyHarry

Neapolitan ice cream
Ahh, the one that came in a block so you could cut and put between wafers (or wait abit and squeeze to lick the ice cream round the sides 😋)

Saw kidneys mentioned - you can still get them. However you used to be able to buy a pork chop with the kidney in. Which I liked even if no one else did.

After a long chat with a butcher a few years ago, it seems they aren't "banned", but highly unusual as the inspection process tends to result in the kidney being removed before chopping.

There's loads of marmite flavoured stuff out atm- Marmite peanut butter, marmite cheese bites (like babybels), popcorn, walkers crisps....

(My shopping list is going to look very different next week thanks to this thread!)

Does anyone remember when Morrison’s used to do those massive bags of flavoured popcorn?? They were near the bakery but. I used to love the banana one and I think there was a blueberry flavour.

Morrison’s also did this thing called a ‘green bomb’ cake which was jam sponge topped with a layer of set custard then set cream covered in green icing - bloody lush!

Also I’m from Yorkshire and we used to have small (but bigger than coop) supermarkets called GT Smiths they did a lot of their own stuff and their coleslaw was lovely, one of the nicest ever. Sadly long gone now.

Was the cake like this? They had to make it on GBBO. www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/prinsesstrta_17336
WalkinginMemphis2 · 28/03/2021 12:54

@sueelleker YES!!! You could either buy a whole cake or a slice. We didn’t do our weekly shop there but there was a massive one on the way back from my Grandma’s and we used to stop in on the way back quite often....if it was a Sunday we also got one to have after our Sunday dinner! We were allowed to buy ourselves a treat and o always got the popcorn 😆

@Ecci

Frozen concentrated orange juice, had to be defrosted (no microwaves then) in hot water, then diluted in cold water. Seemed really posh. Brawn - pigs head (free from the butchers) boiled up and deboned and mushed up. Carlins, I think this might be a North East thing. Brown dried peas, soaked overnight, eaten only at Easter, I never found out why!
My Mum served Carlins with Butter and sugar once soaked. Like you not sure of significance. Parents both from Northumberland.

Love this thread.

My mum was forever dieting during the 70s and she used to have Energen crispbreads, which were , I think, the only alternative to Ryvita.
I loved them with spreadable cheese or just butter. They were wonderful.
Don't suppose anyone knows of a modern day equivalent? They were almost a cross between Ryvita and Melba Toast.

HandyHarry · 28/03/2021 18:18

@Feelinalrightwiththecrew me too!!! Very posh I was 😂

sueelleker · 28/03/2021 19:14

My Mum was from Sunderland, and she had a rhyme for the Sundays leading up to Easter."Tid,mid, misere, carlin, Palm, Easter day.
And I just found this, although Mum didn't use the last two lines.
"The rhyme that children learned, certainly up until the 1950s, that related to the Sundays of Lent went as follows;

Tid, Mid, Miserai;
Carlin, Palm, Paste Egg day;
We shall have a holiday,
with bonny frocks on Easter Day."

TroysMammy · 28/03/2021 20:12

My DM wouldn't buy us dandelion and Burdock because we would see who could burp the loudest. It didn't work with other fizzy drinks. I now buy it from Home Bargains and am trying to teach my niece how to burp really loudly after drinking it. To her chargrin she can't manage it. I'm truly an awful Auntie. Grin
