AIBU to hate mums who turn up to drop off kids in pyjamas?

Mainly because these are the same ones who are also usually swearing in public and shouting down their mobile phones, and/or their kids.

Mumsnet posters are often bizarrely judgemental about all sorts of things. But wearing pyjamas out in public? Oh no, this is something which must be vehemently defended. Even though we all know that everyone on here would think badly of someone wandering Asda or the school playground with their pyjamas/bathrobe on.

I rarely see it, but when I do I think it's completely grotty. Most of society does.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/03/2021 22:07

It’s not something I’d do, but I don’t think I’d hate someone for this or anything like it!

DianaT1969 · 24/03/2021 22:10

How long are you standing around at the school gates for this to bother you? You really need a hobby.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 24/03/2021 22:12

I dislike people in pyjamas in public

But why?

I honestly don't care, maybe because I don't see it often. But it doesn't harm me, it doesn't harm my kids, the local wildlife or rescue puppies.Grin

It literally has no impact on my life, morals or principles.

Why do you care so much? How do you find the will?

Mittens030869 · 24/03/2021 22:49

I think that it isn’t so much a case of defending parents who go to the school in pyjamas (I literally haven’t seen anybody do this). It’s just that I can’t believe how much some people care what other people do, when it has zero impact on their lives.

Also, as I said, if I saw a parent I knew wearing pyjamas, especially if it was out of character, I would think that they were possibly in a bad place and not think negatively about it.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 24/03/2021 22:56

You'd hate the chap who frequently wanders round my town. He usually wears some really out there patterned pjs, bare feet in slippers and a down filled coat. Whether its winter or not.

I don't think that most people here are vehemently defending the public wearing of nightwear. Just saying that (a) we don't automatically hate and despise everyone who does it and (b- in my case at any rate) we don't automatically assume that everyone who does it must come with a set of other undesirable characteristics..

Norwaydidnthappen · 25/03/2021 09:47

I don’t know whether it’s just the area I live in but I used to live in a large city and I’ve honestly seen maybe 2 or 3 people outdoors in pyjamas in my life. Both were during the onesie phase when people just seemed to wear them 24/7.

CaptainVanesHair · 25/03/2021 10:05

I’ve never seen it but given what a terror DD can still be in the mornings, if I did I’d be most inclined to sympathise and think what a shit morning they must have had.

What about trousers that look like pjs? I often wear some patterned jersey wonders that could probably be mistaken for them? Is that as bad?

QuiteContraryMarie · 25/03/2021 10:09

I’ve never seen that kind of behaviour in prep school, perhaps unsurprisingly, and I wouldn’t hate them but I would privately judge the hell out of them.
It doesn’t take much to throw a pair of jeans and jumper on, even if you haven’t had a shower or put make up on.

TheKeatingFive · 25/03/2021 10:13

You don’t think your ‘hate’ would be better directed towards other subjects?

Honestly OP, what kind of person could get worked up about this?

Doona · 25/03/2021 21:06

Today I did early morning drop off in pyjamas, inspired by this thread. It was comfy!

Honestly I’ve never ever seen one, if I do, can’t say I’d hate her, unless she was also smoking a fag, swearing at her kid, and farting at the same time (she would have to be doing all three). Is this an issue outside of London?
Circumlocutious · 25/03/2021 21:16

It was semi-fashionable when I was an Oxford undergrad for students to go to lectures in pyjamas and Ugg boots.

Lastbonestanding · 25/03/2021 21:20

I have never seen anybody pick their children up in pyjamas. People can do a lot worse than dress inappropriately.

AllesAusLiebe · 25/03/2021 21:25

Embarrassing for their kids, though surely?

If you're out in public in pyjamas, it's unlikely that you've showered that day and, judgemental or not, I find that pretty gross.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 25/03/2021 21:41

I knew a few shift workers that were maybe in sleepwear/loungewear rather than pyjamas when they dropped their children off at school in the morning. One stayed in the car but was often clearly in pyjamas.

I think they were very discrete about it rather than flaunting it with shouting and swearing.

I judged those casting the nasty comments about it rather than those dressed in their sleepwear.

Nonamemoana · 25/03/2021 21:44

I did, up until the start of Covid.

"It doesn't matter how you get up, as long as you show up" is my new motto.

I've lost people I love.

We're going through Hell. I'm sure Hell allows for pj's as day wear.

StormcloakNord · 25/03/2021 21:45

I drop off/pick up occasionally in pyjamas, slippers and all (mahabis so have a sole).

It's brilliant. Affluent area as well and I've never had a dirty look off any other parent. I'm either lucky or blind as a bat Grin

Quirrelsotherface · 25/03/2021 22:03

YANBU. If they are sloppy enough to be seen in public in their pj's then can you imagine how sloppy their parenting is. Absolute scummers. Poor kids.

TheKeatingFive · 25/03/2021 22:50

Maybe they shower at night? Confused

I prefer to shower at night.. I have more energy then than I do in the morning.
WoolieLiberal · 26/03/2021 14:11

It really is a thing, but I know single mothers of 5 kids who are able to get washed and dressed before bringing their kids to school...

Each to their own I suppose- it isn’t a crime.

WoolieLiberal · 26/03/2021 14:12

I have seen whole families in the town centre in the morning in PJs during the school holidays mind...

Wide · 27/03/2021 12:11

I think the OP using the word hate was a figure of speech, yet everyone takes it so literally 🙄yawn!
