Disgusting things discovered on MN

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

Just googled munting 🤢🤮

MimiDaisy11 · 24/03/2021 15:21

You could wet the tissue first then wipe which is what most people I know do

I've never asked anyone how they clean their arse before. Am I alone?

SofiaMichelle · 24/03/2021 15:21

@Laytwir024

This is why other people think Brits are so disgusting!
Which 'other people'?

I travel all over the world on business and have colleagues 4 continents. There's no general thought that "Brits are so disgusting!" and, believe me, I'm good enough friends with many of the colleagues that they'd happily let me know when we're ribbing each other.

These 'other people' you know clearly haven't been to a whole host of places I could list if they specifically say Brits are disgusting.

Chanjer · 24/03/2021 15:22

An old cat of mine used to lick chocolate off maltesers and then I'd eat the middle bit Grin

Yes I know they shouldn't eat chocolate, but he lived to a million years old

Immaback · 24/03/2021 15:22

People wash their towels after every use? What a shocking waste of water /energy /washing powder.

Cattermole · 24/03/2021 15:23

All my cats sleep on the bed, one of the bastards sleeps in it and snores worse than DH so. Currently sharing a packet of crisps with Senior Gentlecat, who thinks crisp bits are a perk of being old.

All fine with shoes on in our house too.

I tell you what is the most disgusting thing we do though, the thing that always makes people flinch.
We use proper fabric handkerchieves.

It's quite true, just people don't talk about their shitting habits with strangers. But countries and cultures who do practice this think it's pretty rank

darcysshirt1 · 24/03/2021 15:24

You could wet the tissue first then wipe which is what most people I know do and what I've taught my kids. Eww when thought if dry wiping

How do you know the methods "most people you know" use to clean themselves? I have never discussed it with anyone?

HappydaysArehere · 24/03/2021 15:24

Guessing that dry wiping is using toilet paper and not moist wipes. Horrors!!!

WiganNorthWest · 24/03/2021 15:25

I often don’t flush or wash my hands after a wee at home-I don’t wee on my fingers and my fingers don’t make contact with skin when wiping. Not flushing saves water and I get dry cracked hands (have to wash them a lot at work) so avoid getting them wet as much as possible

Chanjer · 24/03/2021 15:25

And it's not just Brits I think it's Northern European thing in general

IsThePopeCatholic · 24/03/2021 15:25

We are all much too bacteria averse - hence the rise in allergies. It’s good to expose children to dirt and to a range of bacteria. I don’t like dogs and I don’t like the thought of sharing anything with a dog, but that’s just me.

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 15:26

I don't like shoes on in the house! Especially on carpet!

Oh for heavens sake

My cat sleeps on the bed
We use the same bath water
We don’t wash our towels after every use
I “dry wipe” Hmm
Don’t have a dishwasher but would put pet bowls in there
I even let my dog lick my face Shock

Honestly, a few germs is good for the body. Too clean is bad

dotdashdashdash · 24/03/2021 15:26

I do most of these things, I have a healthy appreciation for germs. I am a doctor.

BUT

Sucking snot out of a baby's nose I assume you mean with their own mouth? Bleurgh. That's gross. I did however find using the snot sucker bulb syringe very satisfying on my two!

I've got one of them, except she sleeps in the drawer under the bed and snores. She gets in by squeezing under the footboard and climbing over the back of the drawer.
MimiDaisy11 · 24/03/2021 15:26

We use proper fabric handkerchieves.

They don't know what they're missing Wink . They're so much more comfortable and don't redden your nose if you've got a cold like tissues do. Obviously, you need to wash them regularly.

dotdashdashdash · 24/03/2021 15:27

DH and I share bath water (sometimes we bath together), but we don't have a bath to get clean. When we have a bath we've already showered and are clean.

Chanjer · 24/03/2021 15:27

How do you know the methods "most people you know" use to clean themselves? I have never discussed it with anyone?

It's absolutely a cultural norm for Muslims for example to wash so this doesn't seem like something someone wouldn't know.

Like you know most people in the UK wipe with toilet paper without discussing it

cyclingmad · 24/03/2021 15:27

Closet racists.

People who preach about being kind and compassionate to other people whilst trolling and throwing abuse at people they don't know.

LolaSmiles · 24/03/2021 15:27

BertramLacey
I agree with you. Between only wearing clothing once, boiling and bleaching towels after each use, wet wipes for bum wiping, endless cleaning wipes, and repeated cleaning cocktails that must be used daily for fear of being grim, no wonder the environment is stuffed.

You use the same bathwater as your cat? Confused Grin
MrsWP · 24/03/2021 15:28

My cats sometimes lick plates.

And sleep in our bed (which sometimes goes a fortnight between changes)

And my DH and I will sometimes share bathwater. (Not after exercise etc - but if it's a quick bath - which normally means before sex)

Or sometimes one of my DC will have a bath while I'm exercising and then I'll jump in quickly after to get washed. If it's morning exercise I'll always shower and then wash my hair after.

I do also pee in the shower. I also clean the shower. And myself. Really there's no issue.

I clicked on this thread thinking someone would finally explain dragon butter to me. Every time I see it on here is with a disclaimer not to ever Google it. So I don't. But I am so tempted!

scentedgeranium · 24/03/2021 15:29

I used to suck snot from DC's noses with a little aspiration bulb provided by the hospital. Quite normal practice where they were born in the US. I didn't use a straw!
