Disgusting things discovered on MN

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

My DHs toothbrushes always end up with a hideous hardened lump of toothpaste/dribble around the neck part, no way in hell would I use that 🤮

IJustLovePirates · 26/03/2021 21:49

@WisestIsShe

I clicked on this thread thinking someone would finally explain dragon butter to me. Every time I see it on here is with a disclaimer not to ever Google it. So I don't. But I am so tempted!
Don’t!!! 🤮
HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 26/03/2021 22:43

@ghostfrog

Ew I'm sorry but a special washing up bowl and sponge just for the cat bowls sounds even more grim than sticking them in the dishwasher
Wtf?
Dongdingdong · 26/03/2021 22:48

Whats wrong with putting animal food bowls in the dishwasher? It sterilises everything in it.

Er, no it doesn’t!

but sharing bath water one after another really made my stomach turn

Some seriously privileged people on this thread.

LoveCauliflowerCheese · 26/03/2021 23:18

So to all those who wouldn't share bath water... don't you ever have sex? Or give your DH a BJ??

SURELY if those things are ok then sitting in some water he has sat in, or even at the same time as him is really not so terrible 🤷‍♀️

LoveCauliflowerCheese · 26/03/2021 23:18

Also intrigued to hear wtf "dry wiping" is?!?!

opinionminion · 26/03/2021 23:24

CandyLeBonBon · 26/03/2021 23:27

Soooooooo

How does everyone clean their toilet brushes?

Asking for a friend.

Lemmeout · 26/03/2021 23:31

Omg grim grim where to begin,

butterpuffed · 26/03/2021 23:42

I think the expression 'not knowing whether to laugh or cry' could've been written with this thread in mind 😂

Frenchdressing · 27/03/2021 00:09

Some of this stuff is just ridiculous. Life is too bloody short to obsess over another member of your family sharing your soap or a dog bowl going in a dishwasher. Honestly....

GloriaSicTransitMundi · 27/03/2021 00:42

Tell your friend just to fill the toilet brush holder with warm water and add a few drops of bleach, stand manky brush in holder, leave overnight then empty into loo and flush. Job done.

Make sure to wear mask, three pairs of marigolds, and hold your breath too to be on the safe side..

namechangeaga1n · 27/03/2021 01:05

I had some standards...then I had kids. At 3am when baby projectile vomited over my duvet, I wiped it down with wet wipes (don't worry, didn't flush them Wink), duvet was pretty wet so I covered it with a towel and went back to sleep. Pretty sure I spent most of that year with some vomit on me. I've also just changed a kid after an accident and brought them into my bed, rather than put new bedding on theirs in the middle of the night. I have always used towels more than once, can't understand how people with young kids survive without loo brushes and I bath kids at the same time together. I also cut my kids nails wherever they'll let me. However, watching a dog owner sharing an ice cream with his dog made me want to heave.

eaglejulesk · 27/03/2021 01:15

As for sponges/flannels: yuk, inless you use a clean (not just rinsed off)one every time you'll just be spreading the dirt/bacteria etc from previous washing sessions round your body again!

And yet some of us have lived for several decades with no ill effects whatsoever!

Honestly, some of you are just pathetic and I seriously wonder how you cope with life Confused

Strokethefurrywall · 27/03/2021 01:40

@namechangeaga1n - not just you, I've done the same!
Projectile vomit at 3am and fucked if I'm changing sheets through the exhaustion. Wipe down, cover with towel and go back to sleep until the next round of vomiting.
Same with pee in the bed. Wipe down kid, change pajamas, towel.

How any of us have survived is beyond me.

PeggyHill · 27/03/2021 04:45

I use a flannel on my face every evening before bed. I have 3. I use one, hang it up to dry on the heated towel rack, and use it again the next night, and then it goes in the wash and I grab a fresh one the next night. My face hasn't fallen off yet. Maybe it will soon?

Soubriquet · 27/03/2021 05:54

How are people supposed to wash pet bowls then?

No for dishwasher
No for hand washing after you’ve washed all human stuff
No for separate bowl and sponge

Are we supposed to throw the bowl away after every use? Confused

NoWordForFluffy · 27/03/2021 06:12

@TeckanandMultra

I thought this was going to be more along the lines of dragon butter and munting...
I came in here to see if 'Don't Google dragon butter' had been mentioned! 😂😂
fizbosshoes · 27/03/2021 08:07

Are we supposed to throw the bowl away after every use?

This is what I dont get! There doesnt seem to be an approved way?
But maybe disposable bowls are the answer for the hygeine police.(or maybe they dont have pets at all?) A lot of the habits seem fairly un-eco...

Flowers24 · 27/03/2021 08:16

I'd not be able to sleep with a towel over vomit or pee! Remember many times changing sheets in the early hours!

Pet bowls washed seperately with designated sponge.

Don't use flannels due to spreading Bacteria.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 27/03/2021 08:19

Op you sound pretty tightly wound !!! 😱

Cocoabutterkim · 27/03/2021 08:23

Didn’t read past @MrsKingfisher on page 3, that pretty much sums it up!

MrsWP · 27/03/2021 08:25

@CandyLeBonBon

Soooooooo

How does everyone clean their toilet brushes?

Asking for a friend.

1 - it sort of cleans itself during use as I always put bleach on whatever I'm going to be scrubbing anyway.

2 - I then flush the loo and the bleachy brush gets rinsed in the fresh water.

3 - I also bleach the brush while it's stood in its holder.

I mean none of us touch any part of the brushes other than their handle - which are cleaned every other day when the loos get an outside clean. (Anti bac the seat and handle etc)

Fnib · 27/03/2021 08:37

@Soubriquet I wonder this too. Possibly people who are so tightly wound about pets and hygiene just don't have them?
I wash mine in hot running water and fairy liquid, and as I always wear marigolds to wash up the water is properly hot. I do sometimes wonder about using the tea towel to dry them, but as those get tossed in the laundry regularly I think it's ok. Regularly being as soon as they are too damp or someone has dried not thoroughly washed hands on them, or they've been dropped or used to wipe surfaces....
We all have our funny little ways!
Not poisoned anyone yet.
Yes yes to mopping children and putting them back to bed on a towel when they were small.

LicketySplat · 27/03/2021 08:54

My dog gets in bed with me for a snuggle every evening. It is one of life's great pleasures to feel her warm, furry body next to my feet. She routinely licks all our plates which then go into the dishwasher. None of us have ever had any sort of stomach bug in the three years we have had her.

I grew up in a middle class household and was made to share bath water. Parents were comfortably off but had grown up in war years and were frugal. Four people shared that bath water! I do find that distasteful and wouldn't do that now I'm an adult.

I happily pee in the shower and also in my wetsuit (it really warms you up).

I don't change my bedding often enough.

I do however use wet wipes after a poo and plan on getting a bidet one day.
