Disgusting things discovered on MN

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?
@MolyHolyGuacamole it's only the last couple of generations who've washed clothes so frequently, isn't it? My nan had a washboard and mangle, and washing day was Monday. My mum just had a top loading thingy. Certainly no tumble drier. People really did wear clothes for a week or more.
Weren't kids 'sewn into' their vests during the war?
Re the environmental awareness - were making a lot more noise about it whilst our lifestyles are way less eco friendly than they were when I was a child.
I still wash my clothes once a week, but don't re-wear clothes? And I never get the 'back in the day' argument, we're in 2021.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/03/2021 16:34

I think kids were seen into their clothes 200 years ago.

Not so sure about the war!

Nearlynotquite · 25/03/2021 16:36

@MolyHolyGuacamole you said about what excuse people used to use before 'environment'
I was saying that they didn't. Wasn't trying to start an argument, was just an observation

Inspired by this thread I am now going to read this book about how household appliances created more work for women. It was referenced in a book about tech (because arguably email and other technical advances that are supposed f9 make life easier have also created more work)

zigaziga · 25/03/2021 16:50

I am truly shocked by this thread. Washing a towel after every use? Can this be for real? And clothes after every wear?

Nearlynotquite · 25/03/2021 16:56

That book looks interesting tellme Sadly not available on kindle Sad

That's a shame. Think it is a bit old but it looks like things may have got even worse since the 80s!
LadyDanburysCane · 25/03/2021 17:16

@Flowers24

Doesnt matter if you wash the plates after the infection can still transmit,
But washing your hands gets rid of the germs after dealing with a litter tray so how can washing plates not get rid of the germs?

My cat used to lick my hands and I’d wash them before I did anything else.

KisstheTeapot14 · 25/03/2021 17:24

I did have this comment travelling in India in more youthful days.

Dry wiping is better for women, I always thought as less chance of any particles going into vagina and causing urine infections? In any case, we have a bath/shower at least once a day for a more thorough wash.

@TeckanandMultra

I thought this was going to be more along the lines of dragon butter and munting...
Now I’m intrigued . What is dragon butter , munting?
csigeek · 25/03/2021 17:26

Eurgh my PIL let the dogs lick the plates 🤢 I honestly hate having dinner there knowing!
They sometimes bring the dogs when they visit (thankfully we’ve had a year off that!!) and I flat out refuse to let them do it because is beyond vile.

Bridgetnoknickers · 25/03/2021 17:27

There’s 29 pages of this on my phone, has anyone mentioned Penis Beakers??? Confused

KisstheTeapot14 · 25/03/2021 17:29

I do wipe my cat's twinkle (twinkle little star!) as she sometimes comes out of the cat tray with a bit dangling (she has an IBS type problem).

I chase her (slowly) around trying to entice her to come over and then pounce with my tissue. It's a dry wipe situation, I really don't think she'd stand still for a cold clammy wet wipe to the twinkle.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 25/03/2021 17:32

Do your washing machine and Dish washer not work? Put in something dirty, it comes out clean...

QueenBee70 · 25/03/2021 17:32

@ExConstance

What a load of old nonsense, and terribly bad for the environment. We dry wipe, except for the dog who doesn't wipe at all, too busy licking our plates. Bedding? usually 3 weeks, towels last 3 - 4 days, always dried out after use. Dogs dishes go in the dishwasher and yes, I put tea towels in with mixed clothing. The dogs in our family only sleep in bed with me if they are getting end of life care, as they tend to snore.

We are in our 60's I have not had a day off work with sickness for 15 years, and DH more than that. Our house is pristine, you would never guess how filthy we are.

I love this ex Constance 😂. I was born in the early 70’s , so we shared bath water and people did let dogs lick plates and didn’t even have a dish washer .... shocking ! 😱😂
makesIlaugh · 25/03/2021 17:38

Dry wipe? OMG! We will all die of the plague! I am old enough to (almost) remember newspaper in the outside loo. How did my parents survive?? And actually, all my ancestors, using a shitty stick? In the forests the indigenous people, do they use leaves and moss or wet wipes? When you have to walk miles to get water, do you use it for essentials or damp wiping your bum? Hmm

Stirling2701 · 25/03/2021 17:40

I am trying to work out what dry wiping is. I used to share bath water as long as I got in and out first, but I don't do it any more.

fizbosshoes · 25/03/2021 17:40

What did people use as an argument before environmental awareness became so prevalent? Were they just honest and said they were cheap/lazy? Wash your damn leggings after use, they've spent the day snug against your fanny

Who makes the rules about the correct way to do stuff though?
Is it lazy not to do something you dont think is neccessary?
I dont wash my hair every time I have a shower, because I dont believe it needs washing every day, and actually looks worse if I do wash it daily. Does that make me lazy?
In RL very few people are going to become ill/smelly/infected with something because they used their towel more than once before washing, put pet bowls in the dish washer, or didnt change their bed sheets twice a week.

Obviously there are extremes at both ends of the spectrum - excessive washing/cleaning as well as not washing at all. Thankfully there is a range of acceptable behaviour in the middle, as far as I know (outside MN) there isnt a set of rules and regulations , to be strictly adhered to, and anything below that is cheap or lazy.

A friend used to use 4-5 clean towels a day from 2 showers. After she moved out of her parents house, and had to do her own laundry and pay water bills she realised she actually didnt need that many.

Google at your own peril. Some things are better left alone. 😱

Fembot123 · 25/03/2021 17:43

How are they snug against your fanny unless you go commando.

poppycat10 · 25/03/2021 17:46

Just don't put it in the ring! Unscrew the shower head, pull the hose out of the ring and screw head back on. I do t wash after the toilet, but sometimes wash my hair over the bath with it

Yes we did that with ours but when I wanted to do my mum's she didn't want me to. So when I at my mums and want to have a good squirt you know where I have to contort myself to direct the water.

Can't believe I am sharing all of this with strangers on the internet Grin

Definitely the munting - OMG. Just don't.

Couldn't find dragon butter, the first page of search hits was genuine butter. Maybe it's better that way.

And remember that loo roll that was more like tracing paper? I've forgotten the name of it. Awful stuff.
