Disgusting things discovered on MN

999 replies

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

Dogs in beds, dogs licking bowls, or food that you then eat is a Biggie of mine!

Sparechange · 24/03/2021 21:08

Never mind swimming in the whale spunky sea, have none of you swum in a lake or river?

It is basically duck poo soup...
And every time you come up to breathe and know a few droplets of water are rolling back into your mouth

And yet the triathletes and open water swimmers I know are easily the healthiest people I’ve met.

They share towels as well...

Cat usually pukes on the bed every few days so that dictates the laundry routine. Why would anyone not sleep with their cat? Best part about having a cat is waking up to nuzzles or feeling them curled up in the nook of your legs.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 24/03/2021 21:09

I was taught to wash the cleanest items first, I.e glasses and cutlery, then the progressively dirtier stuff. Obviously you change the water before its soup. How on earth would you have coped in the days before dishwashers? I haven't got one, my flat is rented and even if I wanted one I have no idea where it would be put. My washing machine is already connected to my sink and the waste pipe goes halfway round the flat before it even thinks about going outside.

Thefaceofboe · 24/03/2021 21:09

People who wash their hands after a wee in the middle of the night, how? I can barley open my eyes never mind think about anything else. Sometimes I don’t even remember going I only know when I see wee in the toilet I forgot to flush Grin

@Silenceisgolden20

Can I ask if anyone on this thread goes camping?
🤣🤣 I work in the countryside so people on this thread really don’t want to know what I do! 🤣🤣
tellmetologoffIamaMNaddict · 24/03/2021 21:10

@Wexone

love my cats too. but can not stand this. they are not allowed on counters kitchen table in my house
They definitely go on them when you are not there
Flowers24 · 24/03/2021 21:10

Our cat isn't allowed on the bed , she has her own bed Smile

100% this. I find it cute seeing a little patch of hair they’ve left behind too. Blush

ImAlrightThanx · 24/03/2021 21:11

We used to have to share bath water when we were kids, we'd all be in together.
I don't think it's too gross, for kids at any rate. Pretty grim if one person bathes and then the next gets in!
The rest is gross.

Whatthechicken · 24/03/2021 21:16

Not read whole thread because I got to page 3 and realised I must be a throughly dirty cow. I didn’t know ‘dry wiping’ even had a name...I thought everyone just did it! If you wet wipe...where do you put the wet wipe? Bin? Isn’t that more disgusting?

SpaceshiptoMars · 24/03/2021 21:19

Re: dry wiping. Portable bidets, pp. An absolute necessity if you put your back out and can't twist your body. Astonishing water pressure from a small bottle, too. Never look back! Grin

CrabPuff · 24/03/2021 21:20

@WiganNorthWest

I don’t mind penises - it’s the arse crack that bothers me. I don’t want arse crack skin cells near my eyes. Even if they’re positively squeaking with cleanliness. But I appreciate not everyone is as overimaginative as me!

I like that you cuddle up to his penis though. Like it’s a dormouse.

Standrewsschool · 24/03/2021 21:26

Another slattern here.

In my house growing up (70s), the toilet was in a separate room to the bath and sink, if I recall correctly. So after finishing your business, you’d have to go in another room to wash your hands.

Surely if everyone wet-wiped their derrières, supermarkets wouldn’t have such a large area for dry toilet paper, and would have a larger wet-toilet paper section.

TryingAgain16 · 24/03/2021 21:30

I've sucked snot out of lambs noses and throats. I'm still alive.

SpeakingFranglais · 24/03/2021 21:33

I’m not arsed about the cat licking the plate, it goes in the dishwasher on 70 degrees, probably cleaner than a normal hand wash.

Also not arsed about washing the cat bowls with normal plates. Again dishwasher on 70 degrees.

Sharing bath water? Seriously, how do you think people kept clean fifty years ago. I remember Sunday night baths where the youngest child got the bath water last. This was the 70s, the 1970s not the 1870s.

Sucking snot? WTAF, that is disgusting and repulsive at any level.

AliceAliceWhoTheFook · 24/03/2021 21:39

@sst1234

I’ve seen the first three on MN and was honestly surprised that people live like this. Dry wiping is another unhygienic one. But I’m sure people will be along to tell you in a minute that that’s just normal hygiene standards and anyone who doesn’t do this stuff is weird.
Sorry, but what is dry wiping?
CandyLeBonBon · 24/03/2021 21:46

Are we really actually hoiking our judgy pants up over the way OTHER PEOPLE WIPE THEIR ARSES?

or have I just entered some bizarre parallel universe?

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 21:47

To clarify, obviously many moons ago, I understand that families had little hot water so had to share baths.

What I find abhorrent is when a person that needs a bath gets into the bath to have a wash, gets out and then the next person gets into that same water and does the same and so on. It's not hygienic on any level and neither is it necessary in today's first world lifestyle.

This is different to for example kids getting in together for a splash about or 2 adults getting in together at the same time to relax as generally they would probably hose down after or be clean in the first place anyway.

@Lawton

This is why I love MN, a window into the lives of the nation.

Gross things I have learnt on mumsnet

  • People think it's OK not to shower/bathe everyday. These threads are a regular so clearly a common theme.
  • Putting all manner of shite in the dishwasher - bins, toilet brushes, animal bowls.
  • Not washing before having sex. Explains why there are so many threads with women complaining about a lack of oral and dread to think what they find why they go down on a man.
  • Dogs/cats and god knows what else sleeping in beds with people.
  • Not washing primary school aged children each day. Young kids are famed for wiping their arse properly.
  • Shoes on in the house.

There are more but those are the ones where I just want to scream why!!!!!!

I shower/bathe when I need to, ie when I’m dirty/sweaty. That might be every day, every other day, or twice in one day.

Why would I shower/bathe if I’m not dirty/sweaty?

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 21:50

It's also interesting that those that are against using running water to wash up, changing bath water, or doing too many washing machine loads for environmental reasons are the same ones that run their dishwashers on high heat for hours...

About 40 minutes actually
Wexone · 24/03/2021 21:59

@Pricklypear12 but it has been proven the the dishwasher is the most environmentally friendly way the clean dishes running at high temp uses less water and less energy. my washing machine same the long eco run uses less electricity and less water

shrumps · 24/03/2021 22:00

What do the 'wet wipers' do when they are out or at work? Take a pack of wipes into the loos with them or just use the loo roll supplied??

Wendyhause · 24/03/2021 22:01

I just discovered a new phrase. Ghost poop.

My day is complete.
