Disgusting things discovered on MN

999 replies

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

@smallgoon

Read the thread, it’s been discussed at length.

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 20:32

Genuinely shocked that some people are defending not washing their hands after using the toilet!

@NinePremium my toilet roll certainly doesn't disintegrate. I usually wet a wad of paper before I go in the cubicle if I'm out or I have wet wipes. I had to dry wipe once and it was disgusting. So unhygienic. You'd still have bits of poo stuck to your bum and it just feels so dirty.

ghostfrog · 24/03/2021 20:37

Don't cats just do whatever the fuck they want? They'll just get up on your worktops when you're out.

Meh I honestly think people who act all disgusted about this stuff are insecure or something, half of it doesn't even make logical sense, they just don't like the "idea" of it, but are soooo vocal about trying to make people feel gross and shit about what are perfectly normal behaviours.

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 20:38

Here's another which may wind some people up: I also don't wash up using a filled washing up bowl/sink that you repeatedly dip in and out of/soak the dishes in. I find that quite unhygienic too and I like to use running water and a washing up sponge and fairy liquid Grin

This is why I love MN, a window into the lives of the nation.

Gross things I have learnt on mumsnet

 • People think it's OK not to shower/bathe everyday. These threads are a regular so clearly a common theme.
 • Putting all manner of shite in the dishwasher - bins, toilet brushes, animal bowls.
 • Not washing before having sex. Explains why there are so many threads with women complaining about a lack of oral and dread to think what they find why they go down on a man.
 • Dogs/cats and god knows what else sleeping in beds with people.
 • Not washing primary school aged children each day. Young kids are famed for wiping their arse properly.
 • Shoes on in the house.

There are more but those are the ones where I just want to scream why!!!!!!

Yep I do that too! No point washing dishes in a bowl of dirty water! I mentioned it on a thread about it recently and the general reply was "omg think of the water meter".

My water bills are very reasonable though so I'm not sure it has any great effect. Maybe my water pressure is too low!

BrintIg · 24/03/2021 20:44

@CrabPuff

Sharing towels. You know what he wiped last and what you will wipe first. Noooooo.
I believe this is the reason many (weird) people give for washing their towels after ONE SINGLE use. But... my arse is clean after a shower. Cos you know, I wash it! That's what the showers for! So drying it with my towel isn't particularly scandalous. And it's not like I'm shoving it right up in there anyway.
Somethingkindaoooo · 24/03/2021 20:44

CAN WE STOP SAYING ' SNOT SUCKING!!!'

🤢

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 20:44

@BrintIg feel like the same people that complain about that sort of thing are oddly also the same people that put pet bowls in the dishwasher for several hours?!

I poop in the bath most days , sometimes in the shower so a wee in the shower doesn’t phase me at al - our dog is the best at removing crusted on food too

MAP’s on Twitter. Absolutely disgusting people who are allowed to discuss their minor fetishes on Twitter.

"Cleanliness" is the new orthorexia. Because it's next to godliness, of course.

Frogartist · 24/03/2021 20:48
@Frogartist they absolutely do sanitise, if not sterilise. I do lots of preserving/canning/etc and I always sanitise jars and lids in the dishwasher. Sterilising is a different thing and pretty much impossible to achieve outside of a laboratory setting.
Sure, I'm just saying that they don't sterilise. Some people seem obsessed with "sterilising" everything and think that dishwashers or a spray of dettol means that their kitchen is sterile.I am not sure exactly what sanitise means. Obviously dishwashers do clean things!

I was told by a gastroenterologist that if you have hey on the tissue when you wipe, then you haven’t actually finished (unless it’s diarrhoea).

Washing before EVERY time you have sex??? Wow. Some people have a lot of time
MissPessyMistic · 24/03/2021 20:52

@joystir59

When I was a kid the whole family of six shared the bathwater. Once a week. I was last in and used to play with the scum. I lived.
Same in ours. Only enough water in the tank for one bath, and it cost a bomb to heat. 4 of us would jump in after each other through the 70s and 80s, until we became a bit better off and started doing 2 people per bath. In the 90’s we went mental and had one each! Grin We all washed at the sink every morning before leaving the house though.

Cat’s and dog’s are part of the family, so they sleep on the sofas and beds if it takes their fancy. They lick plates, we put their bowls in the dish washer. We are strong proponents of the sniff test, and towels and bedding are washed when they need it.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 24/03/2021 20:56

Jeez, by some peoples standards we are absolutely filthy. I'm fine with it. Genuinely think our way is better for our health, the environment, and for our relationship (no showers before every sex session over here!)

mrsbyers · 24/03/2021 20:58

@Pricklypear12 nope I have an ileostomy so poop via that - it has a mind of it’s own so I’m not squeamish at all about pee in a shower

Thewiseoneincognito · 24/03/2021 21:01

@Wearywithteens

Not rinsing washing up suds Mixing underwear in the laundry with tea towels on low temperatures Letting dogs sleep in the same bed
OMG are you me? My DPs mum just washes the plates and puts them on the drainer with a baths worth of bubbles still on. 🤯

Dogs sleeping in the bed is hideous. Dogs in furniture is hideous to me too.

Who washes their clothes with tea towels?!? DP would if left to his own devices

PufferFishGoneWrong · 24/03/2021 21:04

@vodkaredbullgirl

ewww I just googled
I am very rarely lost for words, but I really do not know what to say about both. Other than it is disturbing!!
