Disgusting things discovered on MN

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

This thread is hilarious !

Some people shower before they bath , others shower after a bath ConfusedAs a couple of others have said , growing up in the 1970s using siblings dirty bath water was quite common .

There is no need to wash clothing after each wear (asides underwear) unless it's sweaty exercise gear or has stains on .

And, yes, we are quite happy for our dog to sleep on the sofa , the bed and to lick our plates .

I am in agreement that not washing hands after using the toilet is gross, though, and I have never heard of people sucking snot out of their baby's nose .

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 24/03/2021 22:08

I wash pet bowls in the dishwasher but I tend to give them a quick rinse first.
They're not allowed to eat from our plates though. Not convinced it is grim but more so they don't beg.

I've sucked snot out of my DC nose when she was 2 weeks old as she couldn't breathe properly and getting upset. Making it worse.
I've also caught her vomit in my hands.

I have peed in the shower

I dry wipe but feel like I want a bum hose after seeing they exist.Confused

stayathomer · 24/03/2021 22:10

If you pee in the shower surely some residue is left on the shower floor? Just because after I have a shower/anyone showers I have to give the shower floor a quick wipe because there's a bit of scum on it.not everything goes down the plug hole? And this is every shower we've ever had (although I'll admit we've never had a brand new shower!)

On the bath thing, people can't use the "in years gone by' thing, showers weren't commonplace then!

My thoughts on this

1 - What difference does it make if a dog like a plate, surely whoever does this washes the plate after, not just puts it straight in a cupboard

2 - washing dog bowls in the dishwasher, what exactly is unhygienic about this. Dog food (wet foods) is edible by humans, dry foods cause not yukiness.

3 - sharing bath water - unless someone was covered in mud, again don't see the issue

4 - babies nose - yes I get this one, it's gross

Echobelly · 24/03/2021 22:15

We've always had baths after one another - they use a lot of water and it's not as if either of us works down a coal mine!

Januaryissodull · 24/03/2021 22:17

*What I find abhorrent is when a person that needs a bath gets into the bath to have a wash, gets out and then the next person gets into that same water and does the same and so on. It's not hygienic on any level and neither is it necessary in today's first world lifestyle.

This is different to for example kids getting in together for a splash about or 2 adults getting in together at the same time to relax as generally they would probably hose down after or be clean in the first place anyway.*

What has it actually got to do with you anyway? Why do you care how other people choose to clean themselves?

Now you're saying it's ok to have a bath together for enjoyment but not to clean yourself.

It's so small minded.

HalfGalHalfCake · 24/03/2021 22:17

Weird ones about dogs. If a dog licks a plate and it is then washed, what is the problem? Same with dog bowls in the dishwasher.

Do you understand how detergent works?

grassisjeweled · 24/03/2021 22:18

If you don't snot suck, what do you do? Genuinely asking

It's the same reason you don't go into a lake for your daily bath but you might for enjoyment. The point is you're just picking up other people's skin cells and bacteria for no reason. Just hose yourself down, there's no need to share water in 2021

I personally don't care what anyone does but it's literally a huge one thread so of course we'll all have different opinions

ncailleach · 24/03/2021 22:27

Had a play date with a child we didn't know very well (long story!). Child went home and later in the evening, after I got out of the bath, dd told me how disgusting it was that her new friend wee'd in our bath 🤮

Januaryissodull · 24/03/2021 22:32

It's absolutely nothing like washing in a lake.

Clean, hot, fresh water in my bathtub is nothing remotely like going to a lake. It would be hugely inconvenient to go to a lake to wash.

There are dead skin cells and bacteria everywhere, mostly completely harmless.

Bath water isn't automatically filthy just because someone has been in it.

It might shock some of you but even in 2021 lots of people don't have showers or unlimited hot water.

When I moved into my first house which was only in around 2004, we only had a bath tub and a crappy hot water tank.

Quite awful really to call people disgusting and unhygienic for perfectly normal habits.

WiganNorthWest · 24/03/2021 22:33

What about sharing reusable face masks-we have some fabric ones in the car that me and OH both put on for popping into the corner shop/petrol station. They don’t get washed much.

Therainisback · 24/03/2021 22:34

I'm curious about the ages of the posters. I suspect that most of the "unhygienic" posters are over 45.
I am mid fifties & grew up with 1 shared bath a week. Poor hygiene by today's standards but brilliant immune system.
I have sucked snot out of my DD's nose when she was ill at 4 months. How could any mother see their baby suffer & not help?
I remember watching a programme a few years ago " The Victorian House" or something where a family has to live as Victorians. They were initially appalled at the lack of hygiene, but a few weeks in became appalled when they went out at our fake " fresh" smells - deodorants etc.

gnushoes · 24/03/2021 22:36

"Grim" is a really overused word on MN used by pearl clutchers who just don't like something usually for no rational reason. People aren't meant to be sterile. What exactly will a few skin flakes emanating from a towel or shared bathwater do to you? If you wee in the shower, the water will wash it all away (and then you can clean the shower if you like). It all ends up in the sewers with the loo water so no problem there either. Cloth hankies are wonderful. Loo brushes are practical. Wearing clothes that are visibly clean and don't smell for more than a day (not pants) is fine too.
But here are my bugbears (and why)
If you wash your bum in the shower post-poo you're sending any e coli straight to your urethra where it could give you a lovely UTI. You need to give your washing technique a bit more thought.
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose is aesthetically unpleasing and the texture makes you heave if it gets in your mouth
I don't really fancy the sight of a bog brush next to my favourite mug in the dishwasher even if it is squeaky clean and sterile.

OhToBeASeahorse · 24/03/2021 22:38

@Therainisback I'm under 35 and I fall into the despicable category of having sucked snot

I've also been known to share bath water and only change my sheets every fortnight (children get theirs weekly).

OhToBeASeahorse · 24/03/2021 22:39

However I cannot fathom putting a loo brush in the dishwasher!

SneezyGonzalez · 24/03/2021 22:39

Are you ok OP?

My dog has been happily been licking plates for 10 years and her bowls go in the dishwasher - we’re all still alive

Both kids shared bath water until they were about 10 😲 Still alive.

I think I may have even snot sucked many years ago.

I think it’s just an attitude. Some people do the clean, ordered, hygienic thing because it gives them a sense of achievement/satisfaction/esteem. Whereas others are more laid back and less concerned as being perceived as being dirty

Frogartist · 24/03/2021 22:40

@tellmetologoffIamaMNaddict

Cat usually pukes on the bed every few days so that dictates the laundry routine. Why would anyone not sleep with their cat? Best part about having a cat is waking up to nuzzles or feeling them curled up in the nook of your legs.
Fleas, worms, claws, hairs
wizzbangfizz · 24/03/2021 22:40

Change sheets fortnightly, cats on the bed, cats dishes in dishwasher and also on occasion cats lick off cutlery/bowls and I have toilet brushes. Am a mumsnet slattern.

HoppingPavlova · 24/03/2021 22:40

It's not hygienic on any level and neither is it necessary in today's first world lifestyle.

I don’t think you have a grip on ‘hygienic’ though. It’s thrown out willy nilly but not many things are unhygienic. People are a shitload hardier than you think. The only time sharing bath water would be unhygienic is if someone upchain had something communicable and in a standard domestic situation that’s rare as hens teeth. People used to do it out of necessity and the fact is, it mattered not, people were not walking around with disease or even dermatological issues due to shared bath water. Similarly, while I’ve treated homeless people with health issues due to honestly living in unhygienic conditions, I’ve never treated anyone with an issue because they didn’t change their bedsheets regularly. Or anyone who used toilet paper rather than a 5 star bidet after a shit. Most people need to settle down and get a grip.

I don't know what your pee is composed of but after 5-10 minutes of running hot water and soap over myself and the entire shower, there's no residue of mine left at the end, that's for sure.

Then again there is no "scum" that I have to wipe down either.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 24/03/2021 22:40

Bog brushes? In the dishwasher, you say?

[Faints]

CorianderBee · 24/03/2021 22:41

@Pricklypear12

Here's another which may wind some people up: I also don't wash up using a filled washing up bowl/sink that you repeatedly dip in and out of/soak the dishes in. I find that quite unhygienic too and I like to use running water and a washing up sponge and fairy liquid Grin
I use a dishwasher - burning hot temps far hotter than your sink rinsing
wizzbangfizz · 24/03/2021 22:41

I also REHEAT TAKEOUT INCLUDING RICE. No one has died yet in 15 years.
