Disgusting things discovered on MN

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

@Dilbertian - agree. Scientific evidence also suggests excessive cleanliness is not particularly healthy.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/03/2021 20:03

@LockdownIsDragging

I do most of the things in the OP and don’t consider them gross. Have to say though I pee in the toilet before I get in the shower EVERY time. Don’t understand why you would want pee running down your legs in the shower.
Well I pee with pressure so most of it falls to the floor not trickle down my leg. But also the water is already running down your body so it's not like you're rolling about in pee. I feels good to my bladder to pee upright
Flowers24 · 24/03/2021 20:04

uuuggh some disgusting things, agree on them all !

Bunnyfuller · 24/03/2021 20:04

@LockdownIsDragging what will the pee actually do to your legs? In hot running water and shower gel? Scientifically, what will it do?

‘But it’s ewww’ isn’t an answer

You pee in the loo and allow microscopic spray onto your legs etc, but doing it in a shower where only your feet might, briefly, come into contact across skin, immediately washed away, with fresh pee.

RosaLuxemburgwasright · 24/03/2021 20:05

I haven't done the bath thing for decades but it was what happened when we were children and we didn't die of germs.

My cats get to lick my plates if it's food that they like. And then I clean the plates and amazingly they are clean and I don't die of cat germs.

I don't put their bowls in the dishwasher because I don't have one. If I did, I would.

Life is dirty and messy. Hygiene is a great thing but there is such a thing as too much day to day hygiene and some people get disgusted by the strangest and most ordinary of things.

Wroxie · 24/03/2021 20:06

@Frogartist they absolutely do sanitise, if not sterilise. I do lots of preserving/canning/etc and I always sanitise jars and lids in the dishwasher. Sterilising is a different thing and pretty much impossible to achieve outside of a laboratory setting.

Flowers24 · 24/03/2021 20:10

I love cats but dont understand why people let cats go on worktops in the kitchen?

PattyPan · 24/03/2021 20:10

@RosaLuxemburgwasright I wouldn’t let a cat lick something you eat off because of the risk of toxoplasmosis

RosaLuxemburgwasright · 24/03/2021 20:13

@PattyPan but I wash the plates afterwards. I don't eat off the plate at the same time as the cat. I thought the whole point of washing things was to make them clean so we can use them again.

ILoveSlipperss · 24/03/2021 20:14

The most disgusting thing I’ve seen on MN is how people talk to each other.

CrabPuff · 24/03/2021 20:14

Sharing towels. You know what he wiped last and what you will wipe first. Noooooo.

Flowers24 · 24/03/2021 20:14

Doesnt matter if you wash the plates after the infection can still transmit,

Homehaircuts · 24/03/2021 20:16

@dotdashdashdash

I do most of these things, I have a healthy appreciation for germs. I am a doctor.

BUT

Sucking snot out of a baby's nose I assume you mean with their own mouth? Bleurgh. That's gross. I did however find using the snot sucker bulb syringe very satisfying on my two!

Thank goodness I do these to and the snot sucking one was the only thing that grossed me out. The syringe pump worked just fine for mine to.
Silenceisgolden20 · 24/03/2021 20:16

Can I ask if anyone on this thread goes camping?

PattyPan · 24/03/2021 20:16

@RosaLuxemburgwasright I’d be worried that the bacteria were still there, unless you’re washing them at 100 degrees. I think there’s a difference between food residue which is unlikely to cause us harm and animal bacteria which can be quite harmful.

YouKnowItsTrue · 24/03/2021 20:18

Are people’s pets licking the plates as well as or instead of washing them up? Confused

MiddlesexGirl · 24/03/2021 20:18

I probably do most of these ... or have done. Except the baby snot!

Is dry wiping when you don't wash up the plate just dry wipe it and put it away?
I do that with the wok because apparently that's how you're supposed to do it 🤷🏼‍♀️

WiganNorthWest · 24/03/2021 20:19

@CrabPuff what he dried last is probably the (clean) penis I regularly put in my mouth/sleep cuddled up next to

PattyPan · 24/03/2021 20:22

@Silenceisgolden20 I love camping! I still wash my hands after the loo every time, wouldn’t eat off a plate an animal has licked or wash it with human dishes, and don’t pee in the shower (although our drain is the opposite end to the shower, so the pee would have to run the length of the bath)

smallgoon · 24/03/2021 20:24

What the actual fuck have I just read!!!???

Oh god me too.
I was just wondering if people that wash their towels every time go camping?
Prob not

smallgoon · 24/03/2021 20:25

@sst1234

I’ve seen the first three on MN and was honestly surprised that people live like this. Dry wiping is another unhygienic one. But I’m sure people will be along to tell you in a minute that that’s just normal hygiene standards and anyone who doesn’t do this stuff is weird.
What's dry wiping?
haliborangemrmen · 24/03/2021 20:26

We shared bath water as kids. Not all together, youngest first, then next, and finally parents. It may seem disgusting now, but back then even 'well off' people had much less than we have today, and the money wasn't there for 3 separate baths of hot water. Excessive hygiene is something we have got used to as we have more money to spend on it.

We were all perfectly clean, it was fine. We also (shock horror) only bathed once a week, but we had a top to toe strip wash in the morning and evening on other days.

SpnBaby1967 · 24/03/2021 20:26

What if you have a ghost shit? Do you still have to wet wipe then?

Asking for a friend

Wexone · 24/03/2021 20:28
