Disgusting things discovered on MN

999 replies

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

Has anyone ever actually had a problem with threadworms? They are always mentioned on posts like these. My family has never had a problem with them as far as I’m aware and we’ve never actively tried to avoid them. People on here seem terrified of them-they are mentioned on the pjs in public thread, sharing bath water, towels etc. Surely they are easily treated even if you did get them anyway?

Cooroo · 24/03/2021 19:20

Ok i have to say it: peeing in the shower is one of life's pleasures! Just stand and let it come out - you'll be clean instantly, and can made sure the shower is clean too, so what's the problem? Much cleaner than dabbing with loo paper.
I fall short of many people's standards, it seems. I'm never ill and have no allergies.

longdressed · 24/03/2021 19:20

I fail to see how you can do anything other than 'dry wipe' while at work, at the shops, visiting someone, etc... are people wetting toilet paper at the sinks and then rushing into the stall with it before it disintegrates? Confused

Surprised you people manage to have sex what with all the bodily fluids that need exchanging!

Crocidura · 24/03/2021 19:23

Not sure why it must be wrong to dry wipe just because other cultures wash. Maybe in other countries there are women on forums slagging each other off for washing their arses, and justifying themselves by saying that other cultures just use paper?

Maryann1975 · 24/03/2021 19:26

Those of you who think sharing bath water with a member of your close family is unthinkable, do you never go in the sea? Because I hate to point out to you, but there are far worse things in sea water! Bath water must be near sterile compared to the crap (Literally) in the oceans.
(From a quick google ‘ In a drop (one millilitre) of seawater, one can find 10 million viruses, one million bacteria and about 1,000 small protozoans and algae)

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 24/03/2021 19:27

@Unexpectedbaby

Also the only reason I don't put my cats bowls in the dishwasher is because they are never off the ground long enough for a cycle and I don't think they are dishwasher safe. Strongly considering a second set just so that I can though
Poundland have beautiful china children's bowls that have a picture of a cat in a pink tutu in the middle, I have three now, perfect cat bowl size and shape. We call them her bombalurina bowls,
Frogartist · 24/03/2021 19:31

@VivaBahhumbug

Dishwashers sterilise so I have no issue with the dog bowl/plate licking thing. It's probably more hygenic than washing them by hand.
Nooo they do not.
Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 24/03/2021 19:34

My exh used to pee in the bath 🤮 he also used to pee in the bathroom sink, then just ran cold water. 🤮

Squiz81 · 24/03/2021 19:36

I’m curious about the bum hose users - (I’ve just been looking on Amazon) I can’t get my head round the angles involved - if you are that loose and messy doesn’t it just spray it all over the the toilet seat and underside of the lid? The pictures I saw for female users were going between their legs and spraying upwards.
Was also looking at the bidet toilet seats, would be great for my disabled dad - but surely it’s freezing cold water? 😮

P.s for some reason peeing in the shower is quite enjoyable!

TheBullfinch · 24/03/2021 19:40

The thing that still shocks me is the threads where people claim not to use soap in the shower, they just let the water wash over them. Many claim that they dont smell and theyve read that you shouldnt wash your vagina. There's clearly a need to educate people so that they understand the difference between a vagina and a vulva.

hexagonality · 24/03/2021 19:41

@Lweji

Just to really disgust you Lweji, I wash my hair in the bath and rinse it in the bathwater. Then i put conditioner on and rinse that off in the same water!!

I don't get disgusted by that, but I don't see the point of keeping dirt and shampoo in hair after supposedly being washed. If you are going to wash it, might as well wash it properly.

Because my hair is clean and shiny and feels exactly the same as if I washed it in the shower - try it sometime Smile

I grew up in the 60s and 70s and we didn't even have a shower - I don't remember them being a normal thing in ordinary British homes at that time. We mostly used to wash with a flannel using a sink of water, then have a bath once a week. We weren't very poor, but I'm pretty sure this was normal. So I still see it as really wasteful to use more water or electricity than I need - and we all know by now that we can't afford to be so wasteful. What price squeaky clean hair and fresh towels every day when we've finished trashing the planet?

JustAGirlFromHoe · 24/03/2021 19:44

@getsomehelp you’ve just reminded me of what we used to say on bed changing day “Top to the bottom and the bottom to the wash”. That changed though when fitted sheets became the norm along with duvets.

I do miss proper sheets, blankets and a good old-fashioned eiderdown made of extremely slippery material 😂

I peed in my sink in my uni halls room in the middle of the night regularly. The (gross) bathroom was down a freezing corridor. Pee is clean and I think I rinsed it-and no one ever really touched the bottom of a sink anyway. But wouldn’t do it in a bathroom sink right next to a toilet, or a shared sink.

I don't share bath water or go in the sea. I'm clearly elite.

Jk about the elite part.

I wouldn't touch a bar of soap as I think they're unhygienic. Shower gel yes.

As if people don't wash their vagina?! Shock just the gels you're not meant to use on them but you're supposed to use water people!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 24/03/2021 19:49

@Northernsoullover

Can I make a recommendation for dry wipers? You can buy sprays that turn bog standard bog roll into wet wipes!
You can also flush the loo and wet loo roll in the stream of clean water. At home I'd use a wet wipe, but don't carry them or loo-roll-to-wet-wipe spray when I'm out.
poppycat10 · 24/03/2021 19:49

@ElephantsNest

Would those of you who won’t share bath water use a swimming pool on holiday or at your local leisure centre? There’s urine, dead skin and the hair of strangers in a pool. Wink
You just can't think about that, or nobody would ever go swimming ;)
Frogartist · 24/03/2021 19:52

So, how often do you wash pet bowls......?

starfishmummy · 24/03/2021 19:55

@LunaMay

Oh i love a good 'how long before you wash your bra?' thread!
You're supposed to wash them???Wink
Bunnyfuller · 24/03/2021 19:58

And right here, killing the planet.

Bloody hell. You know minimal exposure to germs increases risk of Leukaemia?

And your artificial perfumed stench is vile

Wroxie · 24/03/2021 19:59

People confuse things that are ACTUALLY unhygienic (like using a dish sponge for hand-washing that isn't changed or at least doused with boiling water daily) with things that just FEEL unhygienic (like putting the dog's bowl in the dishwasher). And I know plenty of people (hi, mum!) who would die before using a plate that had ever been looked at by a dog but whose dish sponge only gets changed when I visit and bring a fresh one in my pocket.

LockdownIsDragging · 24/03/2021 20:00

I do most of the things in the OP and don’t consider them gross. Have to say though I pee in the toilet before I get in the shower EVERY time. Don’t understand why you would want pee running down your legs in the shower.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/03/2021 20:01

So you flush twice just because you have loose stools?

CorianderBee · 24/03/2021 20:01

@Mrgrinch

The most shocking for me are the people who wait weeks or even months to change their bedding and the people who use towels multiple times. It's disgusting.
Two weeks between bed changes is hardly disgusting, don't know if we're weird but we barely sweat.

Also using a towel twice? The towel used to dry your sparkling clean body of clean water?
