Disgusting things discovered on MN

999 replies

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

I think if you have a dog in your house you and the house will be covered in “dog germs” anyway so you may as well let it in your bed and on your furniture if you want. And bed/sofa snuggles are one of the main reasons I have a dog

Lweji · 24/03/2021 16:29

@Horehound

I don't understand people washing a towel after one use. That is such a waste of energy and resources and the towel would still be clean... Bizarre.

Do people not understand how enzymes work?!

As a biologist, with a good grasp of what enzymes are and how they work, I don't quite understand your logic.

And, yes, the old sterile/non sterile discussion on MN, when none of it is really sterile. It is a sterile discussion. Grin

I do pretty much everything on the list.

Generally don't share bath water with anyone but the kids. When they get out I let some water out, top it up and add my bubble bath. Unless there is poo or I know they have weed in it, then I start again.

Cat sleeps on the bed, my previous cats have slept in the bed. I soak her bowls in hot soapy water then chuck in the dishwasher or give a rinse off and put on the drainer. I don't like the idea of having cat food bits in the dishwasher so they get rinsed but if she licks my plate it just goes straight in.

Towels and bedding get washed weekly, clothes get worn again until visibly dirty, they smell or I know I've worn them a few times and need to change them. Exception is socks and knickers.

I have used a snot sucker in the past but would draw the line at sucking snot directly from my child's nose. I'm squeamish about that kind of thing, hate it if my own snot runs down my throat if I have a cold.

I have shared a toothbrush with my husband, a towel and a bath. I managed to have 2 children with him so we've done a lot worse sharing.

My house, my kids and me are clean enough. We aren't a hazard to society, not visibly dirty and we don't smell so I think we are good.

jessstan2 · 24/03/2021 16:31

I would have thought putting pet bowls in the dishwasher with other things was quite clean. Everything thoroughly washed and rinsed.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 24/03/2021 16:31

The most disgusting thing I've ever seen on MN is that area of Talk called "Sporners' Corner" or something like that (I'm not going looking for it, once seen never forgotten!). The very word makes me feel ill.

Alsohuman · 24/03/2021 16:31

@Janaih

Whats wrong with putting animal food bowls in the dishwasher? It sterilises everything in it.
Exactly. The dog bowls are a lot cleaner from the dishwasher than they are washed by hand. And my dog licks me.
vodkaredbullgirl · 24/03/2021 16:31

I'm currently sqwished between both dogs on the sofa. Hard to type when there is a head in the way.

jessstan2 · 24/03/2021 16:32

@Nelia5

A family of 4 sharing the same two towels
That is gross. ...... I've never heard of sucking snot out of a baby's nose. Do people really do that?
Frogartist · 24/03/2021 16:33

@FTEngineerM

But if there are still suds on it *@Frogartist* you can’t check that there isn’t any food left.

There maybe food hiding under the sud, schrodingers food specks.

Oh yes, I agree with you! Rinsing is neccessary! I was just telling you what my friend said. I couldn't convince her that you do need to rinse plates etc.
YellowPurple · 24/03/2021 16:37

@Pricklypear12

You only found out those things on here? And not in real life?

iamaclumsytwat · 24/03/2021 16:38

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom Sporners Corner is FABULOUS! Grin

I've done all of those lol
Nameandgamechange123 · 24/03/2021 16:40

I've read a lot of posts asking whether it's unreasonable to only wash once a week or to not use soap and only wash (body and hair) with water. I find posts like that revolting to say the least.

TwinkleStar88 · 24/03/2021 16:40

I wash my cats bowls and litter tray in our kitchen sink. I’ve lived to tell the tale Smile

WestendVBroadway · 24/03/2021 16:41

@Pricklypear12, you are right, sharing the bath water is sooo gross. I can beat that, I know people who get really intimate with their partners and actually put parts of their bodies inside their partner. Some also put their tongues in their partners mouths and do other things with their tongues and their partners bodies. They also do weird things like share a bed, I mean all these things must mean they pass on each other's germs. But hey as long as they don't share bath water. ( Think you may have seen my own post about sharing bath water with DH)

YellowPurple · 24/03/2021 16:41

@Meowchickameowmeow
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose
That is beyond disgusting

..............................................

Your baby is having difficulty breathing and you wouldnt suck snot? Seriously?

grannyinapram · 24/03/2021 16:43

@FTEngineerM

Let me guess you also don’t pee in the shower, change your bedding every 4 seconds and change the sponge twice whilst washing up.
only twice? you pig!
CharityDingle · 24/03/2021 16:44

@WakeUpSchmakeUp

The leggings sniff test. There was someone a few weeks ago who said rather than just wear clean leggings everyday, she sniffed them first to see whether they were okay.

I mean, leggings are pretty easy to launder, don't need ironed and don't cost that much. Just sayin' ..

Threads like that are sometimes started so the OP can get a thrill out of posters sharing what they sniff and what smells...
Crocidura · 24/03/2021 16:45

Wet wipers - do you dry your arse after using a wet wipe / wet bit of toilet paper? Or do you walk around with a wet arse for a bit?

JudgeRindersMinder · 24/03/2021 16:45

@vodkaredbullgirl

Only if I washed their bowl 1st Grin
In the dishwasher I hope Grin

I don't have and never will have a baby but no, I wouldn't suck snot out with my mouth. Seriously!

viques · 24/03/2021 16:46

@HappydaysArehere

Guessing that dry wiping is using toilet paper and not moist wipes. Horrors!!!
I am shocked at the wet wipers to be honest. I manage to poo without spreading a layer of shit over my arse that needs hosing down and disinfecting. Maybe I am unusual or have well trained bowels but my shit exits with the minimum of fuss and doesn’t leave me needing to deep clean.
vodkaredbullgirl · 24/03/2021 16:46

No in the sink with the rest of the dishes lol
