Disgusting things discovered on MN

999 replies

Pricklypear12 · 24/03/2021 14:34

During my time on MN I have read about some disgusting/unhygienic things that people do on a regular basis.

Examples are:
Letting dogs lick human plates
Washing dog bowls in dishwasher with regular dishes
Sharing bath water (seen this one today!)
Sucking snot out of a baby's nose (I somewhat get it but really think I could never)

What are some vile things you've read about on MN that are seemingly normal to those that post about them?

A family of 4 sharing the same two towels

GrouchyKiwi · 24/03/2021 16:13

@Lweji

Out of curiosity, what do people do with knifes and boards used to cut raw chicken, for example? Dip them in bleach, then boil and rinse with alcohol? Or is the dishwasher ok?
I have asked this of the DOGS ARE FILTHY brigade and never got an answer.

Hooooow do you wet the tissue if you're in a communal bathroom facility where the sinks are separate from the stool? Waddle out mid wipe with your trousers around your legs? Be prepared by wetting tissue beforehand?

Spit on it? Grin

Frogartist · 24/03/2021 16:13

@Lweji

Do people really shower after a bath? I mean what is the point of that? You've literally just dunked yourself in warm water and presumably used soap too.

Yes, but some dirt and soap will cling to your skin. A quick rinse in the shower should remove any last remains of dirt and soap.

It is amazing how so many Brits do not seem to have grasped the concept of rinsing.

And that goes for your body and your dishes!
vodkaredbullgirl · 24/03/2021 16:14

My 1 yr old lab keeps licking the chopping board (marble board) Always make sure I clean it before I use it.

Chanjer · 24/03/2021 16:15

No one uses their mouth, do they?

I've seen it with my own eyes

FTEngineerM · 24/03/2021 16:17

You’ve just reminded me about DPs lack of dish rinsing and the mild rage I get every time I see suds on the drainer... how do you know it’s clean if you haven’t rinsed? HE DOESNT

Hooooow do you wet the tissue if you're in a communal bathroom facility where the sinks are separate from the stool? Waddle out mid wipe with your trousers around your legs? Be prepared by wetting tissue beforehand? What if you've misjudged and need more than you bargained for? Would you lower yourself to dry wipe to finish? So many questions.

Our dog sleeps in our bed, licks our face and our plates. Her bowls and ours go in the dishwasher.
We don't wash towels after one use. We not only occasionally share bath water but sometimes towels too. We don't share the bath water if my son has pooed in it.
Towels go in with pants and whatever else is lying around with a dose of napisan, life is too short.
Leggings can definitely be worn for more than one day provided you've had pants on (which cannot be worn for more than one day) and you've not been to a magic Mike show.
My DS and I play in muddy puddles, sand, water; his ethos is the muddier the better. That's what soap is for.
We're all pretty healthy and have a robust immune system, the only time DH or I have been to the drs in the last 10 years is during my pregnancy.
I only change our bedding every fortnight

If this is unhygienic then I'm ok with it Wink

A colleague I used to work with had a small water bottle in her hand bag, she filled it before going into a stall, and would empty it after washing her hands.
LakieLady · 24/03/2021 16:20

*Last summer, we took DC to see a friend who's dog had recently had a litter.

Later that evening, I heard 'look mummy, I'm a puppy', and turned round to find DS3 in our dog's bed sucking her nipple*

Kids, eh? They find the oddest ways of doing your head in.

This really made me lol.

Dilbertian · 24/03/2021 16:20

@Insomnia5

Them: you really let your dog sleep in your bed?? My dog:

Certain cultures might do this but I really don’t believe it to be mainstream

Frogartist · 24/03/2021 16:22
@Frogartist you can get dishwashers that sterilise the dishes. You can get dishwasher tablets that sterilise. Even normal dishwashers sanitise well over 99% of the bacteria
Oh can you? OK, mine only does up to 65C.

No dishwasher is like an autoclave though, surely? Not that I feel I need that, but people seem to use the word sterlise to mean "very clean ", when it actually means something different.

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/03/2021 16:22

Both dogs sleep on my bed, they have 3/4 and I have the other 1/4. There is either a head or a butt in my face when I wake up.

Wexone · 24/03/2021 16:22

Oh lord you would hate to go to my house. I have a dog, it sleeps on my bed at night, during the day the two cats sleep on the bed. I wear shoes in the house. My bedding is changed every two weeks, all my towels washed once a week. All the dog bowls and cat bowls are put in the dishwasher ( they are stainless steel and ceramic) and soemtimes they like the plates too. Washing them in the dishwasher is the most hygience way to clean things ( i wish i could put everything in the dishwasher) i do wear clothes more than one day (working from home no one going to see me). Washing clothes too much is so bad for the environment . am very rarley sick so must be doing something right

Chanjer · 24/03/2021 16:23

Clean "enough" is 60C for 15 minutes

But it wouldn't be sterile

butterpuffed · 24/03/2021 16:24

So, all of you who don't mind your dog/cat licking your plates before you wash them, are you all happy to eat out of their bowls ? Share and share alike Confused

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/03/2021 16:24

Only if I washed their bowl 1st Grin

Nelia5 · 24/03/2021 16:24

@FatCatThinCat. that thread shocked and surprised me

WhySoSensitive · 24/03/2021 16:24

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone in real life who follows the mumsnet level of hygiene.

Also, I’m pretty sure ‘most people’ don’t wet tissue before wiping their arse. I’ve managed to be a ‘dry wiper’ for 30 whole years without anyone telling me I smell of shit. Amazing isn’t it.

PixelatedLunchbox · 24/03/2021 16:25

@Pricklypear12

I get that people love their dogs but I honestly could not eat at someone's house knowing their dog has perhaps had a good lick in the past.

Ugh I do NOT pee in the shower, that's another grim one.

Urine is sterile. I pee in the shower all the time. And I enjoy it. Grin
Frogartist · 24/03/2021 16:25

@FTEngineerM

You’ve just reminded me about DPs lack of dish rinsing and the mild rage I get every time I see suds on the drainer... how do you know it’s clean if you haven’t rinsed? HE DOESNT

Well, someone told me that you don't need to rinse off the suds because they are clean as they are made from washing up liquid, which must be clean as you use it to clean with....
LakieLady · 24/03/2021 16:25

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

I also pee in the shower, EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I pee in the shower more often than not.

I think the noise of the running water makes me want to wee. But I don't think it's unhygienic, the ratio of water to wee must leave barely molecule of wee in the shower by the time I've showered myself, rinsed away any hair, etc AND sprayed the shower with shower cleaner.

steppemum · 24/03/2021 16:27

we had a dishwasher years before most people did.

I remember another mum asking my mum if it was worth it.

My mum's comment was that since she got the dishwasher the number of colds/bugs etc we had all had had massively reduced, due to the dishwasher sterilizing everything.

On that basis, I don;t care if animal dishes go in the dishwasher.

towels - really cannot get my head around the idea that you should wash them every time.
But then I knwo someone who gets one clean towel out and uses it on all three kids, and then puts it in the wash. I don't like the sound of that.

dry wiping - well, pretty surein Uk that that is the standard way.

Chanjer · 24/03/2021 16:27

Well, someone told me that you don't need to rinse off the suds because they are clean as they are made from washing up liquid, which must be clean as you use it to clean with....

Which dries to a film and then provides additional traction and surface area for dirt to stick

FTEngineerM · 24/03/2021 16:28

But if there are still suds on it @Frogartist you can’t check that there isn’t any food left.

There maybe food hiding under the sud, schrodingers food specks.
