When I was first pregnant, 27 years ago, I lapped up all the parent/baby magazines and I recall reading a study , done in Germany I think, whereby a number of families were asked to take part in an experiment over a period of time.
It involved the families being divided into two sets. One set was told to be as fastidiously clean as possible using sprays, wipes, avoiding dirt etc... and the other set involved just getting on with it eg, kids to play in dirt, mud, puddles, only wiping surfaces with a damp cloth, minimal washing etc...
Guess which group had more coughs, colds, diarrhoea, and so on? Yes... the families that almost germicided themselves.
As as aside, I recall, in the not too distant past, being urged by water authorities, govt etc... that we should be sharing baths, re-using water and so on to help with water shortages.
Daily towel, bedding washing is bonkers.
Dishwashers wash at much higher temperatures than hands could bear.
Jam makers regularly sterilise jars in a dishwasher.
Wet arse wipes are a recent phenomenon.
Judging by the ickiness felt by some MNetters re day-to-day living, I'm thinking of buying shares in a company that makes decontamination chambers!
