To be shocked at the price of a plastic box

So I decided that I want to tidy out the inside of my cupboards etc.

Cue some googling for inspiration and lots of lovely tidy pantry images with everything in clear plastic boxes, including lovely turntable thingy to put little things in.

Ah I think perfect just what I need.

So off I go to buy some. Well turns out that the turntable thingy is £25 or more and a clear plastic box is £16. It will cost at least £300 to organise one normal size food cupboard.

So aibu to think £16-25 for a plastic box is ridiculous or do I need to start saving because it is worth it?

I never really understand the need to spend time decanting something out of one container and into another anyway. Seems like a total waste of time as well as money.

JellyBabiesFan · 24/03/2021 12:07

They are a few quid in most cheap shops. Why are you considering spending up to £25?

tiredmum2468 · 24/03/2021 12:08

I agree why stick stuff into layers of container for grime to gather it's totally pointless just out the food in the cupboard end of

LIZS · 24/03/2021 12:08

Try wilkos or really useful boxes often on 3 for 2

Sundances · 24/03/2021 12:09

Are they in the US and have import tax? Or on China?

Dishwashersaurous · 24/03/2021 12:20

its the clear turntable one that I really want and its 25 on amazon or johnlewis.com.

Its the clear acrylic ones which are really expensive.

Please send links if you can find this type cheaper

YANBU.

I am like you OP, I have limited cupboard space and without slim but tall canisters there is wasted space in the cupboards and everything falls out. It’s also a pain in the arse when I have to rummage through to find the one thing I want.

I got mine from Clas Ohlsson (they’re on amazon now) but even they were more than I wanted to pay. Shame though as they fit the space I have perfectly!

I have cardboard boxes (recycled veg boxes) in my cupboard. I just write the contents on the outside. (I keep my plastic containers plus lids in them, so they don't fall all over the cupboard Grin) I find this works very well and costs nothing.

B&M bargains is your friend - but yes I balk too at the cost of storage boxes - especially ones that go in the attic

thelegohooverer · 24/03/2021 12:29

Is it The Home Edit look you’re after?

It’s really hard to disengage when you’ve fallen in love with a particular look. But it’s horrendous for the environment. If you have a bit of time to browse on Pinterest you might find other types of organisation that aren’t as heavy on plastic - glass jars, wooden boxes and baskets can look stunning too.

krustykittens · 24/03/2021 12:30

B&M bargains or TK Maxx. I think I paid about £3 each for mine. I have a big double door freestanding cupboard that is so beautifully carved it is a work of art and no matter how impractical it is, you will only be able to prise it out of my cold, dead hands. But I do need storage boxes for things like pasta and baking staff otherwise half the shelf height doesn't get used. But those prices are nuts!

Chocolatehabit · 24/03/2021 12:30

If you can be bothered you can pick up boxes of all shapes and sizes from Aldi etc and cover them with good quality wrapping paper that doesn’t rip easily. Pretty, eco friendly and a lot cheaper!

Chocolatehabit · 24/03/2021 12:30

This is what intend to do when I have the motivation...

porridgecake · 24/03/2021 12:33

I get my veg from Oddbox. The small box is perfect and they are sturdy and uniform size. They usually take them back for re-use, but can't at the moment due to covid. They are excellent for A4 documents too, so I have a few on the top shelf for archived paperwork.

IKEA is your friend when it comes to cheap plastic boxes

AfternoonToffee · 24/03/2021 12:38

I have had some things from Wilko

www.wilko.com/en-uk/storage/kitchen-organisers/c/1268

The medium drawer organiser works particularly well for my baking stuff as that tends to be all little packets.

Inside a kitchen cupboard needs to be functional rather than pretty. I'm also going to get an undershelf basket from Morrisons as I have quite a bit of dead space in the one cupboard.

IKEA is your friend

Chanjer · 24/03/2021 12:40

If you go to those tat plastic shops you can buy them for much cheaper

You've reminded me I need to get some

PassMeTheWotsits · 24/03/2021 12:53

I have baskets which cost about £2 from pound stretcher, that I chuck similar things in, so all herbs and spices, all packet mixes, all pasta and rice etc. So easy to just lift down the basket that you want, and I’m no longer scrabbling around at the back of the middle shelf not being able to see what I’m trying to grab.

The range is also good for boxes and baskets

TheFormidableMrsC · 24/03/2021 12:53

B&M or Home Bargains are your friend

BarbaraofSeville · 24/03/2021 12:55

You need to look in pound shops, the Range, Wilko, Ikea, B&M, Home Bargains or supermarkets.

£16 to £25 for a plastic box is insane. You can get a small one filled with Ferraro Rocher for under a fiver for a start.

PenfoldPenny · 24/03/2021 12:56

A cheap turntable option is........... 2 circular baking trays one inside the other - with some small beads in the bottom one.

RuggerHug · 24/03/2021 12:59

OP have you also just started the home edit on Netflix Grin

Dishwashersaurous · 24/03/2021 13:00

Think that i will have to wait until the shops are open and then investigate. And ask for the turntable as a birthday present!
