To be shocked at the price of a plastic box

Dishwashersaurous · 24/03/2021 12:04

So I decided that I want to tidy out the inside of my cupboards etc.

Cue some googling for inspiration and lots of lovely tidy pantry images with everything in clear plastic boxes, including lovely turntable thingy to put little things in.

Ah I think perfect just what I need.

So off I go to buy some. Well turns out that the turntable thingy is £25 or more and a clear plastic box is £16. It will cost at least £300 to organise one normal size food cupboard.

So aibu to think £16-25 for a plastic box is ridiculous or do I need to start saving because it is worth it?

Lazy Susan from IKEA £7
Made of wood so nicer and prob more sustainable than plastic.

@Dishwashersaurous

its the clear turntable one that I really want and its 25 on amazon or johnlewis.com.

Its the clear acrylic ones which are really expensive.

Please send links if you can find this type cheaper

They were doing the turntable in the sale section at my Sainsbury's about a month ago. I got one for my fridge. I think it was about £8.
safariboot · 24/03/2021 13:44

"As seen on the Netflix show"

That's why it's expensive.

Dishwashersaurous · 24/03/2021 13:45

So the nearest b and m is over 20 miles away. And I know that johnlewis.com is not the cheapest but for bedding etc always thought that it was reasonable middle price, eg not designer prices.

I have this one. It's been years and years since I bought it and it's still absolutely fine. Good purchase that one

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/03/2021 13:49

Is b&m like a northern thing? I have like 9 within 6 mile radius

Dishwashersaurous · 24/03/2021 13:49

Laughoutquiet

Thank you. Thank you. I've just added one to my food delivery.

Hurrah. Hurrah. That was exactly about the amount I wanted to pay.

Hurrah to the wisdom of mumsnet.com

Strangely, 100+ people are looking at the home edit one on JL Grin

mummywithhermini · 24/03/2021 13:52

Considering you can get small wicker storage baskets starting at £40 that my mummy mates go mad for . £25 for a plastic box seems like a steal in comparison.

That doesn’t look like a space saver to me, on the contrary, looks like it enquires a lot of room.

Dishwashersaurous · 24/03/2021 13:53

And on a quick look i think that b and m must be a regional variation thing. Now I'm wondering what other shops are mainly only in certain areas. Hmm

and I don't work for John Lewis promise!

B&m, Home Bargains, the Range, wilkos are where you need to be looking, they def aren't regional and have been around for years.

ShakespearesSisters · 24/03/2021 13:57

I have the curved fake rattan looking ones in my pantry. But to help prevent dead space I have added extra shelves to my cupboards, its given me a whole extra shelf for mugs without having to stack them. Buy some contiboatd/melamine coated particle board and cut to size. The shelf clip things are about £2 for 8 in b&q.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/03/2021 13:58

idesign brand storage is always expensive, I generally get it when its reduced on Amazon warehouse, I have bought lots from there (used like new, which are generally returns or battered packaging), TK Maxx also sell it

AfternoonToffee · 24/03/2021 14:03

@ShakespearesSisters Where would I get those boards from? I have a need for them but when I googled I couldn't find what I wanted without paying £££

Dishwashersaurous · 24/03/2021 14:09

Quick question. Why are the shops everyone is suggesting open? When ikea and johnlewis are shut?

Hence been looking online as none are local to me, and therefore wouldn't be essential journey. Plus thought that they would all be shut.

I have a clear turntable makeup organiser that has 3 levels and cost £21.99 from Amazon - seems to be a better buy than the single lazy Susan ones designed for cupboards and the 1/4 shelves can be adjusted for height.
It’s quite tall though, 25cm wide and 36cm high so depends on the height between shelves...
For plastic boxes, I use those similar to takeaway containers and I think 25 of them with lids are only about £10 from Sainsbury’s. I added some nice black labels with chalk pen handwritten contents on the sides, they stack beautifully

BarbaraofSeville · 24/03/2021 14:14

They sell food and pet food. All sell crisps, pot noodles, chocolate and canned goods and pet food.

Plus some sell fresh and even frozen food. Some branches of The Range have an Iceland inside.

Plus they're often very cheap and sited in areas where people typically have lower incomes, so closing them would disproportionately impact on poorer people, not that this is the main reason why they've been able to stay open.

I don't think they all are. People are replying based on where they've bought stuff in the past, not necessarily what's open now.

Some might be open if they sell food. Our Home Bargains is open. They're very similar to B&M.

1forAll74 · 24/03/2021 14:29

Some one suggested Wilko, you can get all sorts of sizes and shapes of plastic boxes there, all quite cheap, I have bought quite a lot from there, some for the kitchen, but many for inside my shed, have lots of shelves in the shed, and have lots of little boxes in there for various things, mainly because I love my shed, and it has to be super organised at all times. My home is not super organised, but my shed has to be!!

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2021 14:39

Wilko stuff is usually excellent value.

All the pound shops here are open because they sell essential items. Not been to many supermarkets but my nearest one sells clothes.

PickAChew · 24/03/2021 14:42

Those lazy Susan things look worse than useless. I have a selection of these for packets. You can get similar curver brand ones in the supermarkets but these are much sturdier and will definitely last longer than acrylic. www.johnlewis.com/smartstore-by-orthex-recycled-plastic-basket-10l/p3959092
