To be shocked at the price of a plastic box

So I decided that I want to tidy out the inside of my cupboards etc.

Cue some googling for inspiration and lots of lovely tidy pantry images with everything in clear plastic boxes, including lovely turntable thingy to put little things in.

Ah I think perfect just what I need.

So off I go to buy some. Well turns out that the turntable thingy is £25 or more and a clear plastic box is £16. It will cost at least £300 to organise one normal size food cupboard.

So aibu to think £16-25 for a plastic box is ridiculous or do I need to start saving because it is worth it?

When you say turntable, do you mean a lazy Susan?

NeedaLittleNap · 24/03/2021 13:03

Yes those acrylic ones are so expensive.

I always wonder if you'd also need a secondary storage place for all the bits of packets etc that don't fit into the pretty box. Too much admin for me! I have a cereal dispenser box from the pound shop that I use for rice, otherwise I just reuse ice cream tubs, containers for peaches, strawberries etc, cardboard boxes to organise my packets, bags and jars.

Freyaismyname · 24/03/2021 13:04

Try Poundland

LadyHedgehog · 24/03/2021 13:04

@luxxlisbon

I never really understand the need to spend time decanting something out of one container and into another anyway. Seems like a total waste of time as well as money.
I think it depends. I started decanting everything into airtight containers after an infestation of pantry moths. Supposedly things last longer (although pasta etc. has such a long shelf life I don't really think this is an issue).

Also, I decant spices into wide-mouth jars so I can easily get a teaspoon in.

All that said, my containers are the very cheap ikea clip-top jars, not fancy plastic boxes.

littlepattilou · 24/03/2021 13:05

Where the hell are you looking? Confused

B & M and Wilkos have plastic crates for a THIRD of the prices you are stating here ...

Try one of them @Dishwashersaurous Or Home Bargains, or Poundstretcher. Me and DH buy almost everything for our home from one of this lot (or Argos!)

littlepattilou · 24/03/2021 13:06

Cross-post. Just saw your post at 13.01 @Dishwashersaurous Not being funny, but if you're going to shop in an overpriced overrated store like John Lewis, then you WILL be paying extortionate prices!

There's a reason why this store is going down the shitter. Wink

MintyMabel · 24/03/2021 13:07

Anyone remember Howard’s storage world? Lots of reasonably priced, fabulous storage boxes/containers. I loved it. Sadly they went out business.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/03/2021 13:09

Similar lazy susan for £15 at Amazon.

I decant spices into wide-mouth jars so I can easily get a teaspoon in

I buy large packets of Asian branded spices for about 60 pence instead of nearly £2 for a third of the amount of Schwartz in a stupid tiny jar that is entirely unfit for purpose re the neck hole vs teaspoon business (why??) My current project is finding small jars filled with food that can be repurposed as spice jars when empty, because it's probably cheaper to buy and reuse jars of food (eg capers, jam, olives) than buy new empty storage containers, particularly if you actually use the food in the jars.

ElBandito · 24/03/2021 13:11

I only bother decanting for food stuff that comes in a bag, would cause a hell of a mess if it came open in the cupboard or could get weevils. So flour, sugar, muesli, rice and some pasta.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/03/2021 13:12

I've definitely seen those clear plastic boxes in a shop in the last few days. I think it was B&M, which is still open at the moment, as are all the others except Ikea, John Lewis and probably Lakeland.

Get yourself to a couple of large retail parks where the cheap and cheerful bargain stores are and see if you can find what you're looking for.

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2021 13:13

I use the old plastic tubs that have lost their lids, but Wilko has clear acrylic type ones. Pound or bargain shops definitely worth a try, and TK Maxx often has things.

DorisLessingsCat · 24/03/2021 13:17

I use Lakeland Tupperware. Practical, stackable. Not insta pretty but does the job

And lazy Susan thing will take up more space than it saves.

Jessbow · 24/03/2021 13:19

its weeny!

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2021 13:21

I have a cupboard carousel thing and it's a bit annoying, although great in theory.

porridgecake · 24/03/2021 13:23

Pesto jars are good for decanting boxes of spice/herbs etc. I buy my spices in Asian/Chinese shops, ditto all my rice, noodles, sauces, seasonings.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 24/03/2021 13:24

Never heard of B&M?!

I too normally buy the bags. I find the spices last longer and are easier to use from jars though. That said, shopping habits have got a bit erratic during lockdown though, so I've had to take what I can get! I don't understand the way spices are sold in those stupid skinny jars. Even saffron and whole nutmeg where the container is so blatantly unsuitable!
OneRingToRuleThemAll · 24/03/2021 13:27

The bits on your link are The Home Edit. It's a super pricey brand based on an American TV show

Thanks for that, I had forgotten about pesto. Perhaps we should start a thread. Nicest/cheapest jars for spice storage with bonus points if you also like and bonus points if you like the product in the jar in the first place.

I want quite squat jars so they fit in my spice drawer. Not insta worthy, but it's a secret drawer within a drawer so takes up space that would otherwise be wasted and is very useful.

ZenNudist · 24/03/2021 13:29

Trust me that lazy Susan will just use up space inefficiently in your cupboard. The segments are really impractical. They mean you can't even fit what you like in the circles when its full it wastes space. The circle shape means you have all the space rou nd the outside you can't use. You'd be better off with some open boxes the depth of your cupboard that you can pull out. It's nice to organise a cupboard but you dont need to pay over the odds for things.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/03/2021 13:37

Matalan is another option.

I'm now curious as to how old the OP is to have never heard of B&M and only now learning that John Lewis is usually ridiculously expensive.

ElGuardiandenoche · 24/03/2021 13:41

Sainsbury’s herbs and spice jars have a big enough neck to get teaspoons in.
