To be shocked at the price of a plastic box

So I decided that I want to tidy out the inside of my cupboards etc.

Cue some googling for inspiration and lots of lovely tidy pantry images with everything in clear plastic boxes, including lovely turntable thingy to put little things in.

Ah I think perfect just what I need.

So off I go to buy some. Well turns out that the turntable thingy is £25 or more and a clear plastic box is £16. It will cost at least £300 to organise one normal size food cupboard.

So aibu to think £16-25 for a plastic box is ridiculous or do I need to start saving because it is worth it?

I happened to pass the food storage aisle in Sainsbury's this morning and they had some decent looking "clear clear" boxes around the £6 mark.

I use Lakeland clear shoeboxes (9.99 for 3 I think) for everything. Not airtight but stackable...have organised all the kitchen and bathroom cupboards

Just google wilkos kitchen storage. They have cheap but great ideas to create space in the cupboards.

Try Home Bargains or Bargain Buys (Poundstretcher) or shops of that ilk!

I was shocked too when I looked on Amazon this week. Luckily Lidl has some this week for £3.99. They're a decent size too.

For goodness sake use something that isn’t plastic. All that acrylic crap will be polluting the world long after your kitchen pantry no longer exists. I am genuinely surprised that this message has still not gotten through to some people. Ask yourself if you really NEED to buy £300 worth of little acrylic subdividers.

Easilyannoyed · 31/03/2021 07:45

Try using bamboo, wood, woven baskets or glass jars. Not plastic.

@Dishwashersaurous

Okbye. No no. Everyone had just about convinced me that I was being ridiculous.

Back to last over the clear boxes , I'm clearly getting old

It's not just you, lots of us have been sucked in. 😄 The wilko shallow trays are good for stuff like foil and kitchen roll.

The wham boxes are great if you don't need to see what's in each one. I bought some for the bathroom.

I looked and looked for cheaper alternatives but a lot of the ones I found weren't square bottomed and wasted space or just didn't fit on the shelves I had (and couldn't change).
So I did end up buying idesign stuff for my fridge and food cupboard. Mostly from Amazon with a few bits from John Lewis.
I didn't buy the turntable as I felt it would take too much space.

They look amazing and my cupboards and fridge really well organised. I can see exactly what I've got and it all fits and stacks really well.

I bought tall containers for cereal, pasta etc from argos. They have clear containers with white pressure sealed lids in 3-4 sizes which I've got everything from coffee to rice in.

I couldn't do wicker or wooden storage because my kitchen is damp. Baskets get musty and it isn't hygienic. The Argos containers have stopped stuff like flour get damp and go off.
I bought reusable labels too and a wipeboard pen.

It was expensive and so worth it for me but I would have bought cheaper versions if they'd fitted the shelves/fitted together better.

B&M, tk maxx, Argos, Wilko etc all have some stuff but I found it hard to get enough that actually went together because I wanted neat and not a mish mash like I had before.
The other issue I had is that I haven't really been in any shops in the last 12 months so I didn't want to be trawling round in a pandemic for storage tubs.

I've got big glass jars for cereal and pasta etc bought in bulk on ebay from a company that specialises in pickling equipment. I use cheap woven plastic baskets for little bits - pink for baking, green for herbs and blue for spices so when I want something I just pull the basket out.

If you really want a turntable storage then there are lots of 3 tier rotating acrylic makeup storage units on ebay at about £8/9 incl postage which could probably store eg soy sauce on the bottom and jars of spices on the middle and top.
