To be shocked at the price of a plastic box

So I decided that I want to tidy out the inside of my cupboards etc.

Cue some googling for inspiration and lots of lovely tidy pantry images with everything in clear plastic boxes, including lovely turntable thingy to put little things in.

Ah I think perfect just what I need.

So off I go to buy some. Well turns out that the turntable thingy is £25 or more and a clear plastic box is £16. It will cost at least £300 to organise one normal size food cupboard.

So aibu to think £16-25 for a plastic box is ridiculous or do I need to start saving because it is worth it?

B and m is open as it sells food and other essential things. You can get anything there, garden, DIY, paint, car stuff, toys etc etc.
I think you should just have a trip to b and m and save your self a lot of money. It's great!

Agree with PP that turntables are useless. I bought one (from somewhere like B & M or Home Bargains), cost nowhere near £22 even though it had two levels, and I just couldn’t get on with it.

My favourites are the rectangular containers with handles so really easy to pull out even from a higher shelf. About 3 quid from Wilko.

Presume you live somewhere leafy and naice OP if you’ve never heard of B & M. Come to urban Yorkshire where there is a bargain store on every corner - my unremarkable town has four branches of B & M, three Home Bargains and two Wilkos.

NotSorry · 24/03/2021 14:55

@LadyHedgehog

Oh god we had these too about 5 years ago, they drove me mad - we did the same and decanted everything and still do. Never did find where the little buggers were hiding but don’t seem to have seen any for about 2 years now (fingers crossed)

PintPot · 24/03/2021 14:59

God, the amount of time it would take to colour code and then carefully ram all those sachets into each compartment...

Tidy cupboards are a double-edged sword. A whole day to sort them out, one afternoon of blissful Insta-smugness, then weeks of creeping guilt and resentment as they slowly return to their natural state and you know you've got to do the whole thing over again.

Agree - sturdy boxes with cutout handles are worth their weight in gold for higher shelves (all shelves really) in all areas of the house.

Curver ones are good and stable and if you have a wee hunt are usually in Morrisons/Tesco/Asda/Wilso for a few quid each. We have a few of varying sizes all round the house. Sometime they are only used temporarily (like for a specific school project on the go) so I usually have a couple spare in the cupboard.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/03/2021 15:11

I bought some acrylic containers from home bargains but I think supermarkets often sell them too

NotSorry · 24/03/2021 15:13

Agree about the curver boxes - if you keep your eye on them they often pop up at half price

Caspianberg · 24/03/2021 15:38

IKEA isn’t expensive for delivery, it’s £3.99 for any smaller items. It’s only £40 if your ordering things like large rugs or furniture.

sueelleker · 24/03/2021 15:54

I live in Brighton, Sussex; and my nearest B&M is in Crawley.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/03/2021 16:10

Yrah the turntables. I wouldn't put mime (the ike lazy susan) in a cupboard. I have it on a coffee table. Love it. But it would just take unnecessary space in a cupboard with it's shape

ShakespearesSisters · 24/03/2021 16:14
@ShakespearesSisters Where would I get those boards from? I have a need for them but when I googled I couldn't find what I wanted without paying £££
Lots of different sizes, but this is what you need. The long edges are normally finished. Put masking tape on before you cut so you don't chip it.

Ikea was coming up 15 for delivery of two plastic boxes.

Laughoutquiet

Thank you. Thank you. I've just added one to my food delivery.

Hurrah. Hurrah. That was exactly about the amount I wanted to pay.

Hurrah to the wisdom of mumsnet.com

No problem!

I've been watching Home Edit. I would love some of their boxes, I've yet to see any that look as good. I'm hopeful that JL will have some in store so I can look and see what the quality is like.
The whole point is that they are clear so you can see what is in them, so curver or paper wrapped boxes aren't suitable alternatives. Program worth a watch for some good tips although I find the women annoying, and most of us don't have the luxury of so much storage space, but I have picked up some great ideas.

cannaethink · 24/03/2021 17:24

Get yourself to home bargains! I’ve just bought two really big, deep ones from b&m, two for £16 but I saw them cheaper in home bargains... also got a four pack of medium ones for a tenner. My cupboard is going to be awesome 😁

hulahooper2 · 24/03/2021 17:29

Home bargains sell plastic trays for under £2

Skyla2005 · 24/03/2021 17:31

The range or home bargains won't be anywhere near that price

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/03/2021 17:45

I've been to The range recently and am still shaking off glitter😂
It's amazing. I hate glitter but I am like an excited 5 year old when it's in The range😂

Blueeyedgirl21 · 24/03/2021 18:29

Surely just use jars ? They look nicer too

Okbye · 24/03/2021 18:37

😄 I got sucked in and bought the Home Edit ones from John Lewis a few months ago. I spent weeks trying to find similar ones online for cheaper (theyre as clear as glass) but I couldn’t find any so caved.

My reasoning was that they’ll last forever and plus I REALLY wanted those particular ones (really hard plastic, clear ones) because they looked so good and tidy. So I bought a couple of turntables, a few of the drop front boxes and the pasta canister.

They’re great quality, wash really well and look really nice which is what I wanted. And I LOVE the big compartmented turntable! I’ve got supplements and medication in mine and it holds them all neatly. And it’s so easy to get what I need quickly.

Worth it in my opinion 😄🤷🏻‍♀️

Dishwashersaurous · 24/03/2021 18:45

Okbye. No no. Everyone had just about convinced me that I was being ridiculous.

Back to last over the clear boxes , I'm clearly getting old

I think storage is a bit like stationery. You think it should be cheap because it’s simple and functional, but actually a lot of it is pricey because a lot of people get pleasure from well-made, attractive items so there is a market for ‘nice’ expensive products.

If you really are just looking for functionality, dumelm, IKEA, b&m will have suitable products. I found the best way to get maximum use out of my cupboards was to buy those wire or plastic shelves that sit inside to divide the space up. Dunelm sell these cheaply.

Tkmaxx / homesense also sell lots of cupboard and fridge organiser products. I’ve bought acrylic containers in the past there that have been brands sold at JL.

SpacePotato · 24/03/2021 19:23

I use these in my food cupboard in white and have some larger ones for cleaning stuff etc. Great too for sorting kids craft crap out. They fit perfectly so you can grab the handle and lift the one you want out.
I didn't want clear boxes because I hate seeing the clutter.
I've seen people stick vinyl word stickers on them (dirt cheap on ebay) to get the 'home edit' style look.

AfternoonToffee · 24/03/2021 22:35

@ShakespearesSisters Thank you. Smile I was googling completely the wrong thing. Blush

MrsBDarcy · 26/03/2021 10:20

I need to drag my arse out and buy clear storage. My baking cupboard is awful
