To not want to take part in the 8pm doorstep vigil

AIBU to not want to take part in the 8pm doorstep vigil?

My reasons - I like to keep to myself, my neighbours are hypocrites and virtue signallers, it wont make a difference, and I dont like being told what to do by.

Looks like the usual cover up is in progress - the poor tenants now getting shoved out of site

RaspberryCoulis · 23/03/2021 17:34

Yeah, we won't be doing it either.

sorry wrong thread!

Benjispruce2 · 23/03/2021 17:42

It’s not compulsory.

IEat · 23/03/2021 17:50

Don’t do it then. It’s your decision. But thanks for the debate

FoxgloveBee · 23/03/2021 17:52

Of course not. I'm not. It almost as bad as the Thursday pot clanging that we had to endure last year. At least this is quiet; I'll just shut my curtains and let them all get on with it.

HOkieCOkie · 23/03/2021 17:55

I won’t be doing it, I live in a block of flats anyway.

B33Fr33 · 23/03/2021 18:38

Lost three relatives, one to Covid. I've had people telling me my frustrations over being unable to attend funerals are irrelevant. There's no way I'm making my experiences something to gasp at in a public real life space as I know exactly what all those curtain twitches will be saying online. This pandemic has revealed the true couldn't give a shiny shit attitude of the UK.

@GlomOfNit

I have this little hunch.

I imagine, getting on for late in the working day, possibly pushing into evening, that BoJo realises that it's ONE WHOLE YEAR since he 'had to tell us' all to lock down. (about three weeks too late but hey, what's a total pandemic car crash between friends?) He thinks 'By Jimbo! What a whacking great idea I have just had! Those plebs, they LOVE a bit of doorstep camaraderie! All that clapping and tooting and fireworks and whatnot. Let's make tomorrow a Special Day, one where the People of our great country can come together in solidarity and light their little beacons of hope in memory and hope. And let's name March 23rd Covid Day and do it in perpetuity. It'll be like, whatsit, that thing we all do in November. Is it November? I think it's November. Red flowers and silence and all that.'

He is a colossal, patronising twat. To think that this sort of grassroots, community solidarity can be imposed, top-down. You may not enjoy or agree with The Clap, or The Rainbows, but they were bottom-up initiatives that ordinary people decided might make us feel a bit better and together.

When I woke to this news on the radio this morning, I did wonder momentarily if I was in communist China. Fuck me, we'll be onto a Two Minutes Hate next.

I thought it was part of the Marie Curie of reflection for lost loved ones (of any cause) "It's is a chance for everyone to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of everyone that has died, from Covid-19 and other causes. Will you join us?"
NotTerfNorCis · 23/03/2021 20:13

Couple of people on our street Whatsapp group said they'd be doing it. I was thinking of joining, but looking out the window saw one woman on her lonesome with a candle. Bit awkward.

flippertygibbit · 23/03/2021 20:24

Didn't know anything about it - guess i've missed it now, not that I would have taken part...........

kittensarecute · 23/03/2021 20:34

We've put a candle in our window but that's all.

tiredmum2468 · 23/03/2021 20:47

I work for the NHS and Myself and colleagues got very fed up with clapping and now this

Why do my neighbours want to be banging bloody saucepans waking my kids up

That's not in recognition of anything or anyone

It's just damn annoying

lollipoprainbow · 23/03/2021 20:51

I had no desire to do it but the Facebook Community pages are full of people asking why others didn't bother when they did 🙄 why can't people respect other people's decisions !

MintyMabel · 24/03/2021 12:05

Isn't the entire point of virtue signalling to get selfies of yourself whilst you polish your halo on social media.

And what’s the point of using the same SM to proclaim you refuse to virtue signal?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/03/2021 14:08

@whiteshark

Never heard of this.

Also I didn't know about the 12 o'clock silence today until I saw it on here.

I am curious, how do people find out about these events?

I think some people must be feverishly looking for them, finding them - and then rushing to post on a chatboard to tell people that they don't want to take part in them.

Utterly bonkers... and a bit sad.

I think we're already there. It's been in place since SM and it goes on for hours and hours! Grin
