Shopping in pyjamas

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?

Pyjamas are bad enough, but slippers?! Surely the point of slippers (as well as being soft and comfy) is that they're footwear that doesn't get dirty outside, so your floors stay clean indoors. Or do people have special 'outdoor' slippers?!

flamingflamingos · 20/03/2021 21:25

It's just a grotty, binner thing to do. And it's teaching your children it's acceptable behaviour.

I'm not a fan of pyjamas for sleeping, but I do wear them in the evening after a bath. They're not for outside.

It is attention seeking - just get dressed like the majority of people, it's not hard!

theheartofthematter · 20/03/2021 21:26

I think it's gritty and I do judge but the worst by far is the bloody dressing gown. They look ridiculous and I would die of shame. I slob around in pjs or scruffy clothes at home but wouldn't dream of going out like that!

XenoBitch · 20/03/2021 21:30
**@XenoBitch* true, but to be fair @Dreadfuldays* is on point with her/his comments, if they don't care about their appearance, who's to say that they value hygiene
It's skanky , there is no way of getting around it
I am in a deep depression at the moment and I can not give a fig about my hygiene. Maybe those people in their PJs are the same.
Saying that, I have been to the supermarket to get food and meds in day clothing.. that I have been wearing non stop since Tuesday. Gross? Yeah but I just can not care about it.

@SheikahSlate I’d put money on it being Liverpool Grin my family are all from Liverpool and it amazes me every time we got to visit! It’s not something that really bothers me because it has literally no affect on my life.

I'm saying nothing!

Rosehip10 · 20/03/2021 21:46

People who do this are common.

Supersimkin2 · 20/03/2021 21:49

I've got 5 pairs of men's check drawstring trousers from Sainsburys' that I wear for schlepping, gardening, supermarket, crafting, housework, the lot. After a year in prison they're almost transparent.

But...Thank God they're covered in paint so when sashaying round M&S with trolley I look like a DIY-er not the shameless slob I am.

monstermunchbunch · 20/03/2021 21:52

@Branleuse just wanted to say thank you for reminding me of the utter bloody greatness of GLC Grin

MrsClatterbuck · 20/03/2021 21:54

@thriftyhen

Just hoping that the men weren't wearing traditional striped pyjamas with those open flappy flies! Blush

toocold54 · 20/03/2021 21:54

I don’t think it’s dirty as it doesn’t mean they don’t change before bed but I do think it’s a bit lazy. However I don’t judge too much as I don’t know the circumstances.

Goldieloxx · 20/03/2021 21:55

If you can't be bothered to even change your clothes when you get up, it says a lot, it's horrible

toocold54 · 20/03/2021 21:56

I do think why not just shove a coat over the top of your pjs and then no one would know anyway.

Bluntness100 · 20/03/2021 21:57

I saw this once, two women, early to mid thirties, getting a takeaway. Both In pyjamas and dressing gowns. I honestly think they thought they were being cool and edgy but the looks everyone was giving them I’d be surprised if they did it a second time.

Honestly they just looked like a pair of right twats walking down the street in their pjs and dressing gowns and take away bags.

MrsSugar · 20/03/2021 22:02

I just don’t care enough to even notice ! As long as folk aren’t strutting about naked I do not care what they choose to wear !

Peachee · 20/03/2021 22:04

I witnessed it in the first lockdown.. lady and 2 kids.. I couldn’t believe my eyes Grin I don’t know how I feel about it tbh.. maybe a bit uncomfortable.

KarmaStar · 20/03/2021 22:08

I have to admit here,if I'm really unwell, two of three times in the last 10 years of so and the dog needed a walk I would put a long coat over my nightie to stumble to the park and back.was feeling very very unwell though.
I could never do it as a matter of course.

ViciousJackdaw · 20/03/2021 22:08

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

I think if it’s clean PJs it would hypothetically be ok. But then it’s not likely to be, is it? As why change into PJs when you could change into clothes.

It’s going to be the pyjamas they slept in, and sweated in, possibly not wearing underwear.

Yes, it's not the pyjamas themselves that are the issue, it's that they give the impression that the wearer is unwashed and therefore minging.
Gilly12345 · 20/03/2021 22:12

Unless it was done as a bet/charity event then I think it chavvy and without wanting to sound snobby I think the parents have very low standards and are setting a bad example to the children.

I have seen some evenings in the supermarket children in their pyjamas out shopping with a parent and even though I don’t like this I do understand that it is probably for convenience as bedtime is looming.

Butteredtoast55 · 20/03/2021 22:12

Tramps. Every last one of 'em!

Yes as someone said up thread, they are too depressed to care, I think your comment is quite cruel.
zeitgeista · 20/03/2021 22:15

oh these replies are so funny

Pan2 · 20/03/2021 22:16

I love being all pointy-fingered, and these people I judge massively - they don't affect me at all, which adds to the pleasure of judging.

ViciousJackdaw · 20/03/2021 22:23

Not all of them. Some are just dirty bastards.

Gilead · 20/03/2021 22:29

My common, chavvy ds, who is just finishing his Masters in Lit wears pyjama bottoms all the time. He’s autistic and finds them more comfortable. Fortunately he doesn’t give a shiny shit about what other people think of his attire.
